MacDonalds & Euro 2008

I don't know if anyone else here much watches the football and the Euro 2008 tournament that is on at the moment, but I think it is a bit ironic that MacDonalds are official sponsors of the Euro 2008 Escorts (ie the little children that come on the field with the players before each match).

I had a wry smile when I first heard the advert linking the 2 and was wondering what the rest of you thought about this?

Maybe I'm being a little cynical thinking about the association of MacDonalds (and it's reputation) and the vulnerability of advertising on small children, as being a very cunning ploy to increase their profitability

I think it's ridiculous. Like they done with fags, they should stop fast food being associated with sports

Very good question. Thing is, there was this doctor man on telly at 4am (i was wide awake) saying that we associate McDonalds with how they used to be. Ok so they are calorific and fatty but the beef is good, the chicken is good.....

He was even suggesting that parents often feed their kids much worse things than McDonalds on a daily basis and said that before Jamie Oliver came and woke up school dinners kids were often eating horrific foods for school dinner.

For instance, I went to pick my 19month old niece up from her childminders and she had a pork pie, beans and chips for dinner?!?!? Erm, WHAT?! Went slightly mental :)

McDonalds is changing, and truthfully it is a nice treat for children but i mean like twice a year :)

No, I agree with you. It's a nice rare treat but not every week. I just don't think unhealthy food chains should be associated with sport as it gives the impression, to the less educated, that McDonalds is a healthy place to eat.

I think sponsorship should be relative. A sport manufacturer should sponsor sporting events. Health food chains too

Oli says: "It makes me want food, in fact get to the kitchen"

Now i'm dealing with a 21yr old child who just had a major slap across the back of the head :D

You know something, many people have said this to me and to be honest, I don't really understand it at all.

MacDonalds are promoting sports, fitness and teamwork... the problem lies where?

I would have said people have a responsibility to themselves and their children to make sure they don't eat too much fast food - I would say this alleged 'vunerability' of small children to fast food chains is due to poor parenting as opposed to MacDonald's advertising.

It must also be mentioned, although it is a customer favorite, MacDonald's do offer more than soggy chicken nuggets in a menu, you've seen all the adverts for fruit pieces and salads in recent years I assume?

I would have thought the impact the Euro would have on children would be to encourage them to play team games with their friends and idolise fit, healthy and athletic role models, I've never had the experience of a child telling me all the Euro made them think about was MacDonalds.

And if they were to go 'Mummy, I want to go to MacDonalds today!' as soon as the football is over, surely a simple 'No.' would suffice?

I'm sorry if I've misunderstood the point you were making, but I do think any negative outcome from this advertising is another case of self-responsibility and parent-child responsibility.

I think that poor parenting is a very good point. A woman local to me was in the papers a couple of years ago. Her 11 year old daughter was 13 stone and she blamed McDonalds saying that the adverts were everywhere and it was what her daughter wanted. My first thought was WTF??? Surely the only money an 11 year old has is what is given by the parent? If they are spending irresponsibly then the priviledge should be withdrawn. The parent should be in charge not the child. There is only one person, in my view, who is responsible for her weight and that is the parents. So in that case, yes I agree that it's up to the parents to say no.

On the other hand, yes McDonalds are promoting fitness and exersize but at the same time sport is promoting fast food!

Has anyone had a look at the maccy's menu though? you say they do salads etc but some of the burgers are less calorific than the salads!! Saying that, I read some news yesterday that apparently some bloke lost six stone by just eating the 'healthy food' at macdonalds. You never know, there might be a new diet on here in the near future ;) lol...

Have any of you ever watched the programmes about the super-obese people (I'm talking 50+stones) who are usually bed-bound, and the parents/carers are interviewed and usually are 'baffled' as to how these people are so big- er....maybe its the crate loads of food you carry to them every day?!?!?! These people are bed-bound- they can't get their own food so are reliant on it being brought to them....
Just thought I'd add my tuppence worth to the 'parenting' argument.... ;)

I always watch those programmes and it usually provokes the response from Mr Taz: "Stop shouting at the TV. If it winds you up so much why do you watch it?"

yeah i know, its ridiculous that people actually take food to those poor people in bed because they cant get up. surely they have the ability to control their diet and help them in their struggle to lose weight? maybe it's not as easy as we think, i dont know?

I personally think places like McDonalds shouldn't be allowed to advertise on TV at all just like with cigarettes. The problem is it does advertise itself mainly to children and then children will bother their parents and those wanting a quiet life may simply give in! It doesn't really affect me because when I have children (far into the future) they will be vegan under my roof so no burgers for them :p
