Right, well I’ve started a food diary so might as well start a weight loss diary too!
My problem has always been that I love my food waaay too much. The amount I can eat, I don’t know how I’m not a lot bigger/heavier than I actually am. I was always one of those people you hate that can eat whatever they like and not get any bigger, so I got used to bad eating habits. When I was about 18 I worked at a vets surgery so food was always very much ‘grab something and go’, I used to eat crisps and chocolate if we got a tea break mid morning, for lunch it would be a ready meal or I’d go to the chip shop round the cormer, usually followed by more chocolate! Awful really when I look back! It was when I got a job in an office (and have been in office jobs ever since) and was suddenly sat down all day that my weight started going up. I was a size 8 for years then all of a sudden I was a 10, then a 12… I’m now a 14 which is the biggest I’ve been – OK not massive I know, but fact is I just don’t feel happy. I’m short so any extra pounds just don’t look good on me – any bigger than a 10-12 and I don’t feel happy in myself.
I had my first baby in December 2008 and when I was on maternity leave with her I used to just eat through boredom really. I never really lost the baby weight from her and then I fell pregnant with my son who was born in March 2011. I joined Weight Watchers in summer 2011 and lost just over a stone, I started at 10st 10 and got to 9st 7. My goal weight was 9st but when I got to 9st 7 I realised I was a size 10 for the first time in years and felt great so I decided to stop losing. I went back to work in December 2011 and unfortunately that’s when it all went wrong again. All of a sudden I was juggling work and 2 children and didn’t have time to go to WW meetings, and of course it was nearly Christmas, there were lots of lovely cakes, biscuits etc in the office and of course it was that age old thing of “never mind, I’ll enjoy myself after Christmas and then be healthy afterwards”. Of course that never happened, I fell into old habits and carried on eating badly, was kind of in denial for ages and didn’t weigh myself for a good while! It was only when I realised none of my size 10 clothes fitted and I was back in my old 12s and was actually struggling to even get in them – I had to go and buy size 14s – and that’s what made me realise! I weighed myself and was 11st 9 which is my heaviest ever! So I’d put all the weight back on plus just over another stone!
I’ve tried a couple of things – tried My Fitness Pal but despite sticking to the calorie allowance each day I just kept losing and gaining the same pound every week. Lose 1lb, gain 1lb, lose 1lb.. etc. I decided to try WW again but joined online this time. I lost a few pounds but, I don’t know what it was – my heart wasn’t in it, I wasn’t sticking to the propoints allowance (my own fault I know), I was having too many ‘cheat’ days – I just wasn’t in the zone.
So after enjoying Christmas 2013 and eating far too much as usual I’ve decided this is it, once and for all – I have less than 5 months until my wedding in Greece and I need to get my butt in gear! So as from New Years Day I cut out all the usual crap from my diet and swapped it for healthy things. For example, at work is always a bad/tempting time for me – a typical day’s food at work used to be: Instant latte when I got to work at 8:30am, at 10:00am me and my friend would go downstairs to the café and I’d get 2 slices of toast (usually peanut butter/Marmite etc), a caramel latte, and quite often a biscuit/flapjack etc too. Lunch would be a sandwich or wrap from the café or sometimes a hot meal like chilli/curry, chips etc. Then crisps or chocolate. There’s always biscuits and treats lurking round the office so usually in the afternoon I’d usually have one of those! Dinners in the evening were 50/50 really, we’d have healthy things like stir fry or chilli, low fat curry etc but then other nights it would be pizza and chips.
So when I came back to work after Christmas that was it, all change. A typical day since then has been herbal tea when I get here, water throughout the day. Breakfast – usually a bowl of special K or porridge. Lunch – WW or homemade veg soup, packet of quavers, 1 jaffa cake. Then dinner in the evening as healthy as poss. I also joined the gym at the beginning of January so I am aiming for 3 times a week – I did that last week. I lost 2.5lb last week.
I have now decided to try Slimming World – I’d always thought it sounded too complicated but I went round a friend’s house last week and looked through her booklets about it and realised it actually sounded quite good. So I started that a couple of days ago, I’ve planned my meals for the week and have been shopping to get it all, I’ll carry on with the gym 3 times a week too and see how I do on this. I can’t quite get my head round SW and how much you can eat on it, I don’t understand how you actually lose weight (I think I’m struggling to get out of the Weight Watchers mindset where pasta and jacket potatoes are very high in propoints values and yet they are ‘free’ on SW) so I’ve half got it in my head that I’m going to gain weight this week. BUT I’m giving it my best shot, so let’s see what happens! I weigh myself on a Friday, so 4 more days to go. I’m doing to SW ‘extra easy’, the red/green days look too confusing at the moment and the extra easy means me and my partner and children can eat the same meals most of the time.
So let’s see what happens come Friday…
