Question VLCD and Starvation?

His may sound stupid but you know when people say go too low on calories and you enter starvation,

Is this true? How come so many people lose weight on VLCD?

I'm not an expert, but I think it's because on a properly designed and supervised VLCD your body still gets all the nutrients it needs, so doesn't go into starvation mode, whereas if you just eat normally but very low calorie this probably won't be the case. So you're not supposed to do a DIY VLCD. xx
