Any ladies slimming down to TTC no.1?

Lucky you - hope it continues to go smoothly.

... but as I said as a modifiable 'risk factor' it's not something I could let myself intentionally do. :)

You make it sound like if you fell pregnant you would have an abortion because you would be so disgusted with yourself. I think that's quite sad, a child is a blessing and a miracle for some of us if my body was unable to cope with pregnancy I wouldn't have fallen pregnant to begin with.

I don't think weight is always an indication of a persons health I am overweight but have no health problems at all, I've been to the dr perhaps three times in 15 years. Before my pregnancy I attended dance classes 4 hours a week, swimming everyday and the gym three days a week. I also walked my dog an hour a day. Yes I'm fat but I'm not unhealthy and before I fell pregnant I was losing 3 to 5 lbs a week. I got overweight thanks to university and that freedom of 24 hour boozing and cooking for yourself for the first time I didn't know how to look after myself properly and I gained 5 stone but even then I was exercising everyday I lived above a gym and the reward for an hours gym was the jacuzzi!

My midwife has classed me as low risk despite my bmi being 38 and I'm not under a consultant, she actually weighed me as she didn't believe I was as heavy as I said she thought I was three stone lighter than I am!

Couldn't agree more x

I'm similar to both of you. Have made myself a rule that we cannot start TTC until my BMI is <25.

& again not so much a fertility thing but my job has scared me stupid about all the things that can go wrong in foetal development, pregnancy & childbirth - so it seems inappropriate for me to not fix a risk factor that I can.

If anyone wants motivational stories of gestational diabetes, early C-sections, inabillity to get epidurals in because of subcutaneous fat distorting back anatomy, inability to get drips in for emergency treatment because of hiding veins under fat - let me know... :p

If we all panicked about things that COULD happen and COULD go wrong nobody would ever do anything!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and own beliefs but there's no need to try and scare people into changing their mindset.

I'm not trying to uninvitedly scare people when they haven't asked for my advice - the 'motivational stories' examples were suggestions to think of if people did want motivating thoughts in loosing weight (which the premise of the thread suggests they might) & things that have scared me - but i'll edit them out as I suppose it could be scary for people who would prefer not to know.

Anyhow, I was talking about the strength of my personal motivation & got the word 'I' in there plenty of times.
As I said - my job has skewed my perspective massively but I don't think it panicks me out of doing anything... just wanting to alter the risks as much as I can & it's not just a weight thing:

e.g. not wanting to try to conceive (the emphasis here is on the actively planning & trying - not 'what would Guinevere do if she accidentally got pregnant!' :p) before cutting alcohol way down, taking folic acid for > 3 months, being uptodate with cervical screening etc. etc. Busy times! :D

Well maybe you need to assess your tone as you came across making it sound that those of us who are pregnant and overweight are irresponsible and you also make a bmi of 25 sound like a magical fix all ill's people with a bmi under 25 still have complications, still get gestational diabetes amongst other things it's not a magic number and it has no bearing on a woman's ability to carry and give birth to a healthy baby. It does effect the fertility of some people but people with a healthier weight also struggle to conceive.

Maybe you need to assess yours too? Saying I seem like someone who would easily choose to have have an abortion & that a child wouldn't be a 'blessing and a miracle' for me isn't exactly all cuddles & rainbows either.

I was clearly talking about myself - sharing my rule for my pre-TTC weight target, that I was talking less about conception itself but more about the process of pregnancy & child birth and that weight I see as one modifiable RISK FACTOR for me. I'm more than aware that people in healthy BMI ranges can have complications but it's a question of risks. Same with the other things I mentioned e.g. not every baby that didn't have 3 months of folic acid before conception has a neural tube defect etc. - but different people are comfortable with different levels of risk when they're choosing to try to so something.

Sorry if my tone hit a 'you are irresponsible' nerve - wasn't intentional.

(I don't think I'm especially judgey but if someone did ask for my advice on TTC I'd give it to them, including mentioning weight if outside the normal BMI range in either direction - in the absence of any better quick use system BMI is a good enough broad marker of normal and levels of deviation for weight for me!)

Hi all I have pcos and had terrible gaps between periods, now I seem to get them alot more like a good few months in a row, and sometimes they are bright red and flowy and sometimes they are not so much and light but any bleed and I am happy.

Things that I have done that have got me to this are -

Stopped all alcohol

Stopped junk foods and sweet cheap confectionery (still love a treat once a week but its fairly good)

Lost some weight, bmi of just over 30 but hope that going down thanks to slimming world

Walking more

Cant think of any more but a total lifestyle overhaul was a good thing for me, as I also have chronic fatigue syndrome.

But I am so scared to get prego, I am not sure I would want to put my body through that as I have felt so ill for so long, but when/if I get to goal weight then I will be happy that I have done all I can for my health at that point, weight off and healthy foods is really all we can try and do. xx

Hi all, me and my hubby have been ttc for 8 yrs, I'm 28. I have pcos and have been told that we will only be able to have children with help of fertility treatment. I am 5 stone over weight and have just started the Cambridge diet, any of you out there that have fallen pregnant naturally after losing weight??? X

Hello you have the same story as me... I've been trying for 8 yrs too went to the hospital in October 18st 9lb and with the help of meal replacement Which I started in January at 18st 4lb I am now 13st 10... The specialist who said I need to lose weight for her to give me treatment said she has seen it very often that when women with pcos lose weight they fall pregnant naturally.... I'm hoping for a miracle now I'm lower... They will treat me at 13st I hope :)

Well done katiebaby for losing all
That weight :0) you've done really well fingers crossed you get the treatment you deserve :0)..... I'm really struggling with diet today grrrrr so hungry I've been told that the hunger passes after a few days though so looking forward to that!!! Just got to keep thinking why I'm doing it and it will keep me going. Sarahmac keeps me positive reading posts like yours :) had clomid in the past but didn't respond due to my weight so hoping once I've slimmed down I'll get more positive results:0) x
