Anyone been to Egypt recently?

I don't know anything at all about Egypt as a tourist destination, but given that the political situation there can be somewhat volatile, I would think it would be better to go as part of an organised group.

When we went all travel agent tours had an armed escort at all times and there was always one stationed outside the major hotels too. Was a bit daunting at first but you kind of ignore it after a while. But that wasn't the beachy destinations like Sharm and Hurghada and was 12 years ago now (omg forgot how long it had been! Ignore me lol it could be totally different now!)

You should try Thomson website, I know you aren't going with them but they actually list excursions and what not and they tend to compete with each other so should give u a rough idea.

Definitely fly, we took the train and a coach from Luxor to Cairo and it was the longest day imaginable and sweltering so not what I would recommend, you want to enjoy your holiday :)

Hurghada is beautiful, although we only got one night so didn't see a lot (our holiday was to Luxor so both Cairo and Hurghada were overnight trips for us)

Have a fantastic time! :) x

Great idea I'm googling now! Thanks xx

Given the current situation- looks like the pyramids are of the agenda!
Did anyone do any activities in hurghada whilst they were there? Xx

My friend did a fantastic bedouin )sp) experience while she was there, which is basically a ride out into the desert, a belly dancing show, bedouin dinner and stargazing with telescopes! I don't know if it's something that would interest you but was about £45 pp and she said it was fab

Sharm Excursions - Day Trips & Excursions in Sharm El Sheikh

They do them from lots of places, bummer you can't see the pyramids if it was something you were looking forward to ( we didn't see what all the hype was about once there, but others may very well do, Luxor is amazing for history and all the tombs etc and you can get rides on the Nile etc xx

Thanks for the link! So far it keeps saying Red Sea resorts and hurghada are fine but I wonder where we would stand if all travel gets stopped- would Thomas cook reimburse us the £1400 we paid?! X

Hurghada is fine at the moment and same for sharm! My friend has an apartment out there :)! im off there 3 weeks today wahay! did the excursions last time so need to go Cairo thankfully! xx

I am so upset! We won't be allowed out of the hotel in hurghada- no excursions not even sea-related ones. I feel like we've wasted £1400 I am gutted :-( x

I was just wondering about this when I saw the news just now. How annoying for you. Can you not get any kind of refund from the travel company. Would you be able to cancel? What does your insurance cover?

The FCO advice is still saying that the Red Sea resorts are OK, and unless they specifically say you shouldn't go, then you probably won't get any joy from the travel company or the insurance people. But it is worth contacting them to ask.
