Caravans - Static & Touring

Hey guys.


Do you or anyone you know have either of the above?
Have been looking into it for a few years, but just can't make a decision, probably because I don't know anyone with them so haven't had any first hand owners advice.

Have you gone from one to the other or bought one, never used and therefore sold?

Any advice, warnings, pro's or con's would be very much appreciated.

The reason I have been looking is so that when hubby has a couple of days off, we can just go off for a few days and have the freedom to take the dogs.

The idea of renting to cover site fee's appeals from a financial standpoint but no so much from an emotional one. I feel like it would become less of a home from home if random strangers have access to it...hmmm

Hubby has never towed anything if relevant.

I have a touring I love it. We have. 2 kiddies and its great to just up and go for the weekend and love the freedom of choice to go wherever we want. Hubby had never towed before but his dad had so he went out with his dad for the morning towing to get a feel for it and practice manoeuvres and has never had a problem towing.

Statics don't appeal to me would hate to be stuck in one place. Hubby briefly looked into it at a haven site and it seemed like a bit of a con.

Touring does appeal, as i'm a bit of a foot out the door kinda chick lol, so would be able to go wherever, whenever.
Although, you'd have to pack up and tow and set up and find sites, or is it that once you have been doing it a while, that you know where to go, and set up ends up only taking half hour instead of the 3 it takes with a tent?

Plumbing and electrics are the main appeal with a static but they are so expensive, even after buying one, you still have all the site fee's and i think i would very easily get bored with the same place...

Hi, we went from a tent to a small, very old caravan that we payed a few hundred pounds for, we loved it and while we were away in it we spotted a caravan sales place, nipped in just to be nosy, came out after spending £7500 on a new van! Lol. We found a local ish storage place for it, think it was about £250 for the year, we had some great times in it, but found that caravanners in general weren't as friendly as tenters, they spend most of their time inside their vans with the TV on etc. Which if that's what the want to do that's fine, but it's just not us, we like to make friends with people while we're away. We have now sold the van and bought another tent!!!
Joining the caravan club is well worth the money, you're guaranteed clean shower /toilet blocks etc. Good luck in what you decide to do. One tip though, don't use all your water to wash up your dishes in the sink!! It uses loads! Carry it over to the dish washing sinks in a bowl, will save the OH moaning about having to go and get more water!! Hehe x

I was looking at trailer tents in a camping international we have here, they were all set up and really looked like you had a lot of space, and if i am honest, if i had had the 2K sat in the bank i probably would have bought it lol.

I liked the idea of so much space, and certainly liked that the beds were raised (old bones do not like getting down on the floor lmao i'm only 34!)

My only issue would be that, again, no running water. Hubby makes a joke that you could set your watch by me needing to get up for a pee as soon as i'm undressed and got into bed lol, and i'm a scaredy cat so i make him walk to the toilet blocks with me when it's late and dark.
Although the trailer i saw had like a blocked off wardrobe area (that's what they called it anyways) and i thought i could maybe put a little porta loo in there for those middle of the night, drunk to much, situations lol

This is why i still haven't brought anything.

I'm not a lover of camping so much, i just love the sitting round a fire. having a bevvy and a chuckle with friends and random strangers. I am certainly not a hardy camper lol, we have friends who go camping in the Highlands in friggin' winter! Madness i tells ya!

We have a folding camper. It has a cooker, hot and cold running water, fridge and best of all, a loo from parking up we can be set up in 30 mins.
I wouldn't have a caravan or a tent.

I love being able to hitch up and go somewhere, although the best campsites book up quick for school hols!!

You could always google on reviews of caravans etc. I innocently googled on Remoska cookers and it went on to links about caravans etc. I was quite interested!

In our caravan now. Just arrived. The awning will go up tomorrow, and we are all kipping in the van.
Takes an hour to set up. We chuck the kids out in the awning and have the van to ourselves. They have own sleeping compartment each end and they bring friends along. Cost £4000 for van an 1000 for awning. Had some great breaks. Lots of variety.

Went back up to Camping International again today and think we are going to go for a trailer tent to start with, and then if it gets used enough we will probably upgrade to a 'van as if it turns out we don't use it much its not so much of an initial outlay that's wasted.

oh definztly dont get a static. one thing i love about my caravan is that when the weather is aweful outside, im nice and warm inside lol. classic example was last yearin sept we went to devon, our awning had a river running through it, it was raining that much lol weve just upgraded from a tiny 4people caravan to a twin axle, and so excited about taking it away. good luck in your choices =]

went and looked and caravans yesterday thinking that the price and the lack of headroom (hubby 6"3) would put me off...seems to have had the opposite effect though...oops

Will i ever make a decision lol
