Getting rid of fluid retention...

A mix of things has prompted this thread...

Ninja's posts about people eating salads and retaining water.

Reading about the warm weather causing more fluid retention.

Someone at work asking whether tablets like Adios work.

So...I googled a bit. Drinking more water is supposed to help relieve fluid retention! Yay!

How much though? Do you just keep going as much as you can, til you start to feel less bloated?

Also, as it's my WI day today (and I'm clutching at straws for any loss I can) if I drink masses and masses, am I going to weigh more tonight? Or in theory, should it be ok as I'm just fully hydrated and normal, and not retaining?

Waffle, sorry! But any thoughts/ideas/experience?

As its cooler today I would have thought drinking plenty wouldn't have any adverse effects but in this mine field of water retention who knows . Good luck with weigh in today xx

Hi hun! Your bladder holds up to a litre at a time and so the theory behind the drinking water is that it fills and empties your bladder quicker. Rather than just having a few drinks throughout the day tat actually just stay there and make you feel bloated. As well as ensuring you stay hydrated too.

I did a total food replacement diet and had to drink 4 litres a day on that. Obviously having no food helped to no feel bloated haha but the water i'm still doing now, i drink 2 litres a day, 3 when i can.

Just for reference, 1 litre of water weighs 1 kg so just over 2lbs!

I'd say just do what you have been normally as it is your WI tonight, and then experiment a bit with different amounts from tomorrow. See if it helps at all. That way it won't effect any weight loss tonight! Hope some of that makes sense!x

I drink 3 litres a day. The more you drink the more you shrink, as your body does not hold onto it if it is coming more often. This may be of interest to anyone with WI .....
How long does it take for a litre of water to go through our bodies?

Very interesting question.

The short answer is that for normal people it should take about 2 to 3
hours. There is an easy way to find out. Drink a litre of water, and see
how long it takes for your rate of urine production to go up and then go
back down.

But it depends on several things.

First, the water has to be absorbed. For example, if someone has really
bad diarrhea or is vomiting, the fluid won't be absorbed.

Second, it depends on what is in the water. If it is pure water rather
than water with salt in it, the pure water will be excreted faster than
salt water.

Third, if someone is dehydrated, say, was playing soccer for two hours and
sweated out two more litres water than he drank, the fluid would stay in
his body and his rate of urine production will stay really low until he
drinks more. And if one lost two litres of water and drinks three litres
of water, it will take longer for the rate urine production to increase
than if he is not dehydrated.

Forth, it depends on the time of day. Usually, people's rate of urine
production (assuming identical rate of intake of fluid, like if one has an
IV) in the middle of the night and increases around the time he wakes up.

Finally, it depends on the state of health of the person. IF a person has
kidney disease, the urine production might not increase as much. ANd if a
person has heart disease, the fluid may build up in his tissues instead of
being excreted.

The reference is a paper where students drank water in the morning and
determined how long it took for the water to be excreted. In this paper,
it looks like they urinated out about 400 or 500 ml of water over about 2
hours, before the rate of urine production slowed down. For a liter of
what is needed, it should take a little longer.

Oooh that's helpful!!!

This is all good stuff.

But....when shall I stop drinking before WI so that I magically weigh 5lbs lighter? If someone could tell me that please..... LOL

I drink a 2 litre bottle of water besides my other drinks during the day.

Drinking over 2 litres didn't help me much yesterday in the end. 1lb up! :( However, there were a lot of gains and my consultant did suggest water retention as a possible problem.

I do drink quite a lot anyway, usually, but intend to keep up the 2+ litres more diligently this week and see what happens.

Good to share advice. Thanks peeps x

I try to drink 2 litres of water a day, plus countless cups of coffee (bad I know!) but on weigh day which is at 5.30, I don't drink anything after 2.30. Probably daft, but I've always done it and in those 3 hours I squeeze out every last little drop!!!
