How many syns?

Hi everyone, I'm starting SW tomorrow but doing it myself at home with a complete 2012 starter pack I bought online.. Have only read the first few pages but already come to my first hurdle!

'Enjoy 5 to 15 syns a day - your consultant will help you decide the number of syns to aim for each day..'

But I don't have a consultant, so does anyone know how many syns I should have? Is there a way to work this out using stats like weight etc?

At the moment I'd say I'm lightly active with work, my LO and I'm gonna slowly ease myself back into going to the gym. So would 10 syns a day be okay?

Yeah I'd say start off with ten and see how you go, but I wouldn't worry if you have more then 10 some days. I have to have at least ten a day and I didn't think I was THAT active, but I do walk a lot and when I was having low syns I was maintaining. I've started trying to do more exercise as well, so make sure I have at the very least 8 syns but its normally over 10.

Okay thanks, I'm just worried that by eating 10 syns a day I'll gain! I've had a quick read through the food optimising book but going back over it now cause I'm still a little confused!

You really won't gain from 10 syns, I used to feel the same but my consultant told me to try it and I had my best losses having higher syns. I think someone on here has pointed out the amount of cals you have to eat to gain weight and the syns we're allowed are nowhere near that amount

Remember that 10 syns of food that has no free food allowance is actually only 200 cals so it's definitely not going to put you over the edge. Enjoy the syns, that's what they're there for.

Didn't think of it that way :) so if I want something but it's not in the syns list in the food optimising book - how would I work out the syn value? Is it 1 syn for every 20kcals like people have mentioned?

1 syn for 20 cals as long as there is no free food in it. E.g a 160 cal choc eclair would be 8 syns. But a pot of supermarket pasta salad will not be 1 syn to 20 cals as it has free food (pasta) in it so you can look it up online or get someone to put it through the syns calculator.

Okay that's great thanks :) I'm wondering about Cadbury chocolate philidelphia? I buy the individual 35g little tubs, and their 86kcals each - so would that be 4.5 syns?

It's lovely on a crumpet! & I'm sure I saw crumpets at 4.5 syns each in the book - so that'd be 9 syns for chocolate philly on a crumpet :) might have that one day!

Just be careful which ones you get as they do vary. Good news is Co-op crumpets are 3.5 and Asda smart price are only 3! Woo hoo for yummy low syn snacks!

Remember that your food optimising book doesn't give brand specific syn valuea only averages. Somee will be higher and others lower so always best to check

They'll be 5 syns. 1 - 20 rule would apply. Still under 10 syns for the crumpet and Philly.
