Went to see my doctor today, about getting slimming world on refferral via the GP, so basically the NHS pays for me to go to the meetings etc, i just need to go see my pratice nurse monthly at the same time

So, to sum up...I've been reccomended for it

The doctor looked at my previous losses, gave me a well done and said i was a prime candidate to be put for the scheme..so got a meeting with my pratice nurse on monday (who happens to be my lecturer aswell lol) and im going to get weighed, full check up and get 4 weeks worth of vouchers, and get rechecked

Really good news

Never thought i'd be one to ask the NHS for help with loosing weight, but as a student i do need that extra fianancial help and the fact i AM loosing and doing well is as good sign

Thats great, I am giving it a couple of weeks at class then going to see my doctor for the same thing. At least after a couple of week I will be able to show that I am losing weight and the referral won't be pointless!

I'm not entirely sure i agree with the nhs funding outside businesses and i wasn't aware they were doing it but good luck on your weight loss ladies . i have not heard of this at all what Primary care trust are you under hon ?

Nottinghamshire university hospitals

I'm also unsure, but basically..the NHS isn't really paying a buisness, but more paying for me to loose weight, as if im honest..with my family history, if i carried on being the size i was/getting bigger I'd end up costing the NHS a lot more with furthur health problems.

It was a moral issue for me to consider, and something ive taken a lot of thought over, obviously as an NHS employee and also a student nurse i've felt very strongly about the NHS funding things like gastric bands etc, but my gp reminded me..carry on being the size i am I'd be costing them a lot with diabetes, heart disease etc later on in my life, plus they're not handing it out to anyone, like i said they want to see me often, check up on me plus my consultant has to give me a monthly reference etc and i HAVE to keep a food diary

I work with the NHS really closely and i understand this must have taken some thought it just seemed a bit extreme, but no more so than gastric bypass i suppose it's a bit of a touchy subject at the moment the treatment of obesity they seem to be throwing alot of money at it even in advertising i have seen alot of healthy eating ads during primetime which must be costing them alot. I suppose in the long run it is a solution and if your having to report back it must be an exra incentive for you too, i didn't mean to come across as unfriendly XXXX

I think its a fantastic scheme and in the long run its got to be an awfull lot cheaper paying for someone to go to a slimming class and loose weight than for them to remain overweight and maybe become a financial burden to the NHS with weight related illnessess in later life.

Good luck and I hope it all goes well for you.

Good luck Huney! It will cost the NHS alot less than a course of tablets!

I have mixed feelings about the NHS paying for WW/SW classes. I think its fair enough if someone is on a limited budget, single parent. student etc. But I strongly object to people who CAN afford it being referred

well unfortunately I am a student..£5 makes a lot of difference!

I agree with the above and if people can afford to pay then they should, other than that I can't see a problem with being referred. Surey it will be cheaper to pay for however many meetings than for some one to just get bigger and bigger until they are on a cocktail of drugs for aches, pains and illnesses and then if DLA was to be claimed as well.

Like I said in earlier post, I too am going to look into referral. I am a lone parent with no financial help from father and also a part time student and £5 is a fair bit of money for me.

Plus the fact someone else is paying me to go and there are expectations help boost my motivation even more i guess

well done NN8 for getting referred. I, too, have been referred and to all those who posted saying they either don't agree with the NHS paying or at least should only be free for some people i strongly disagree, I am not a single person, student or on a particularly limited income. However, I pay a lot of tax every week and isn't that why we have an NHS or should i be penalised for working. The NHS pays for gastric band surgery etc, breast reduction, fertility treatment, viagra etc, so why shouldn't it be used to help people lose weight in a productive way, i.e changing peoples eating habits, its got to be better than paying for tablets or surgery. I think it is a great system for everyone wanting to lose weight and it will save money in the long run. If its available it has to be available for everyone. To sum up, I think anyone who has been referred by their GP should be commended for taking that step and not criticised or made to feel that they receiving something they shouldn't. We are all in this together and we all know how hard it is

I have been referred by nurse as well. I could probably just about afford to pay but with my husband out of work it would feel a bit frivolous to be spending money on me. It works a bit differently here you have to have a BMI of over a certain amount (normally bout 3 stone overweight) and you get 12 week countdown and you may have it continued if you lose weight. I will see my nurse at the end and get referred again. When I saw my Dr he tried to put me on slimming tablets which i refused because I dont think it is the answer for me to help deal with emotional eating and bingeing. I am guessing slimming tablets cost at least £5 a week on the NHS as well.
I have no problem taking the referral I think of all the schemes they run for smokers and drinkers and drug addicts and think it is about time they started helping people with weight issues and food addiction.

knowone was criticising anyone !!!!! i pay alot of tax but just because i pay out money for the nhs doesn mean i should take advantage of it , i think it's a great scheme for people who can't afford but if you can then you pay for it yourself otherwise everyone would have it paid for and what a huge drain on resources that would be. It is commendable when anyone decides to lose weight and slimming world should be available to everyone even those with limited funds but just because we can take advantage doesn't mean we should. The nhs should be setting up it's own weight loss solution not paying out money to an outside business. in any case i think this is something we may have to disagree on best of luck on your weight loss.
