LL in the news

it is all a conspiracy backed by the huge comapnies behind Slimmers World and/or Weight Watchers - mark my words!

I like to sum up all this nonsense in a new rule I follow, and advise to all other people who need to reduce thier weight:

"Don't take advice on weight reduction from people who have never done it".

All those people condeming 'miracle' diets have probably never had a weight problem before.

The only naturally thin person I would take advice from would be a specialist, with proven experience in the field. Not even my GP had any sensible advice on weight loss...

At the very end of the day - I could get struck by a bolt of lightening right here while typing - I could get run over by a bus on my way out the door tomorrow- there could be a huge earthquake today - or my heart could give out at some stage.

Life is uncertain. Sure - we don't want to increase our chances. But having been 20 Stone, and now being nearly 10 stone......ya know what - I am happier then I have been in 25 years. I am not depressed anymore, and no longer feel like food is a slow form of suicide.

If any of those things happen to me today - tomorrow - or next year - I will at least have experienced feeling HAPPY. And I would rather live a shorter HAPPY life, then the life I was living, which only felt like a long long chore.

For every good story - there is a bad story - and vica versa.

In my mind - when your time is up, your time is up.

Enjoy life. Do what makes you happy. Its no ones business but our own.

thing that annoys me is all the comments that follow the article. All those saying how we should just eat sensibly and exercise.
If it was that simple we woulnd't be taking the drastic measure we are!
Glad to see there are plenty of LL supporters on there who have lost and maintained their weight.
Equally, pople who have done it and gained all the weight again- but that's what thye've chosen to do. It's not down to the diet- it's down to them!
Let's not listen to what the world thinks of us 'crazy lazy fat people who want to lose weight'. Let's focus on supporting each other through our journeys.
God bless lighter life. It's worked for me and to be honest, I don't care what anyone else thinks. Espeically the people who read the daily mail! (no offence meant to any readers here lol) xx

I totally agree that living off 500 calories a day is not good for our bodies and would throw it into starvation mode. I also believe that in living off so few calories we would be losing a lot of muscle and thus this would reduce our metabolism and then when we went back up to a 'normal' person's calorie intake we would put on weight, whereas they could maintain.

HOWEVER!!!!! Lighterlife is not just eating 500 calories a day. It has been constructed so that we are receiving enough protein to prevent our bodies going into starvation mode and also prevents us from losing additional muscle (bearing in mind we will lose some muscle on any diet). We are also getting 100% of the vitamins we need each day. This is not just eating 500 cals a day. I could eat a big mac a day for 500 cals and understand why people would think this was not safe. The only reason people put weight back on after losing on LL is by going back to their old eating habits.

Gallstones often occur if you are overweight. I have gallstones. I had these gallstones before I started LL and I will have them when I have finished. I have very thick hair and to be honest if some of it fell out I would be happy.

As far as the cost goes, I would have paid someone twice what I have paid out to be slim. Every single penny has been worth it.

It makes me extremely angry that the journalist has not covered the benefits of VLCD and the LL diet in particular. It is a very poor piece of journalism.

Thing is that you could tell by reading the comments which ones of them had never had a weight problem in their life. People who have not been there can never understand. I don't pretend to understand why one of my best mates takes crack! Or why my other friend has had anorexia. I've not been there so why would I understand their situations, just like they cannot understand my situation. You just got to work it out yourself, with the help of other people out there who have been or are in your position and who DO understand.

Good point BL - we have to live for the now.

I also reckon it is very easy to blame our own problems on someone else rather than facing up to our own mistakes.

We all need self-awareness in spades and the humility to realise that some things are down to our own actions or re-actions and not to anybody else.

I got fat because I ate and drank too much over a long period of time living the "good life". I didn't get fat because McDonalds advertised their burgers, or Bells advertised their whiskey ar any other such rubbish. I did it because I chose to do so (either knowingly, or just because I got in the rut). This is something the counselling has taught me, so I find it odd that this lady has not seen that she has replaced one addiction (over-eating) with another (under-eating). Rather than find a way out of the problem she has created it is easier for her to blame somebody!

I don't care what the media say about LL, it was a godsend and a miracle that came into my life when I was at my lowest.
I did not want to live my life any more as a fat person, I had 2 choices - gastric band or LL, I believe I chose the right route for me.
Yes I've put some weight back on since rtm, but not all of it & I'm here dealing with it again & I will go on dealing with it for a long time, until I get it right & with LL's help.

Well said Mikey. I have to say if one thing irks me more than anything its the blamers. I read on a thread somewhere a woman said she had been failed by the system that is why she was fat. WTF!!!!!!!

I get annoyed with rags printing such one sided bull.

Maybe we should all get together and write to them to complain about their lack of providing sufficient facts.

Had that poor woman died of a heart attack because she was over weight who would they blame?

Good point, in reading that article and the subsequent comments, I think it became obvious "they" were saying that LL was an alternative to Slimming World or Weight Watchers or "good old healthy food and excercise". But in actual fact, what about those of us for whom it was the alternative to obesity surgery! I'd rather spend my money on LL that the tax payers money on a gastric band. Wouldn't they!?

Maybe we should get the journalist to look at this forum to see what it is really about and the positive effect on so many people.

The Journalist is called LAURA TOPHAM - I wonder if anybody can work out her email address - we could then email her to get her to take a look warts and all at the successes (and failures) of this great diet.

What aload of twaddles!!!I ignore these stories.
My memory is not great..but been like it since i was little. My hair falls out ALL the time, been years!
I could die with a heart attack or get diabetise(sp) for being obese.

I chose a vlcd to better my life..doctors and media keep saying we should not be fat and when we do something about it, thats wrong too.
Too Fat Too Skinny..we cant all be perfect..not such thing as perfect.

I'm planning on asking my counsellor if it's ok to take vitamin and mineral supplements with the plan. I've already been told this is ok, depending on which ones I take. Extras to help my hair and teeth, a top priority!

Does anyone take any at the moment? Are we allowed to chew gum to help with dental issues?

VLCDs helping thousands of people lose weight and get healthy isn't newsworthy - VLCDs "killing" people is

It is frustrating when we know better - obesity / morbid obesity contributes to over 30,000 deaths in the UK each year and the figure is rising, the Royal College of Nursing reckons there could be more obesity-related deaths than smoking-related deaths in 10-15 years time.

Yes there are risks - but for the majority of us they are substantially outweighed by the benefits.

Hair loss is due mainly to losing the hair you retained whilst on the VLCD. Gallstones can occur if you lose weight quickly - but are more common in those who are overweight/obese (and female, and over forty - sorry girls!). Some people get a little tired - but most of us have more energy than we've had for years. Some people get cold - throw another jumper on.

Eating disorders are head not food issues - if you're going to get an eating disorder, it will happen irrespective of what diet you're doing. I know - I've been there myself.

All of us know the dangers of drinking excessive water - and the consequences, the poor lad who died wasn't following the rules and recommendations of the diet. If a doctor prescribes tablets to someone with instructions to only take 4 a day and ignore the instructions and you take them all and overdose - would you blame the doctor? More people die from water overdosing whilst taking ecstasy or running marathons.

As long as we are following the rules and reporting any side effects that worry us, we should be ok. Personally I've been following W8, and I do like the fact that "real" food isn't excluded - but meal replacement packs on all the diets are food - the nutrition we need to survive healthily whilst our bodies use up our excess fat for fuel.

I agree that the papers should come on Minis and check out just how much good these diets are doing - but I don't suppose anyone is interested in a success story!!

With love and continued progress to everyone
