Does having a very slow metabolism slow down weight loss on a VLCD?

I struggle to lose weight because my metabolism is slow and thyroid problems run in my family, i've had my bloods checked and i'm border line just wondered if this hampers things in any way.

Thanks

I have an underactive thyroid, although I do take thyroxine for it, and as you can see from my signature is not affected my weight loss. I don't think it will make much difference, as it's really all about those calories, and at 600cals a day, the weight has to go down!

I am the same. I also have an under active thyroid.
I take 200mcg thyroxine a day, which I am told is quite high.
I agree which Cybil... it really is all about the calories :)

yes you will loose weight but it could be a little slower as you are a liitle low and are not on treatment to keep you in the right place. Its worth getting it re checken in about 6 weeks into the diet to see if there has been any change as I have now had to put mine dowm from 200mg to 175mg per day and the doc said that a vlcd can do this. hope this helps.xx

I am glad you mentioned the reduction of your meds...
I wasn't sure if I would have to get mine reduced.... less weight, less meds needed ect...
Well, thats what I thought anyway
I think I am due a check up soon anyway :)

Emilyj does that mean the vlcd helps the metabolism if ur meds was cut down?

Hello :)

I too have an U.T & I am on 225mcg a day which is actually higher than the highest dose but mine is unstable at anything else. If you are borderline then technically you could be slightly out of sync, but it shouldnt make a huge difference compared to if you were underactive and not on treatment. WHen you are on treatment and if your levels are correct then you will lose weight in the same way as a person without a thyroid problem.. its just a synthetic form of the hormone taken in pill and not produced by the body. Works in the same way.

EVERYONE has a slightly different level of norm when it comes to thyroid levels.. if you are 'suffering symptoms' then the general rule of thumb is that they should start you on treatment or refer you to a specialist to sort management. Just a 25mcg tweak could have you feeling like a new person :))

if in doubt go back and insist on action. being cold, constipated, tired, hairy, lack of hair on the head, lack of eyebrows, funny eyes, weight gain etc are all symptoms (and more) so get checked if it applies to you

good luck xx

I'm ok but thanks for a very helpful post for now or the future xx

Ok thanks, we'll see how it goes and take it from there.
