Minimising foot pain when exercising

Fluffy lil flutterby :)
Hiya, i hope this is in the right section

I have recently, in the last week or so, started to become more active, because i realised that sorting out just my eating isnt really good enough

I just got a free gym pass from my local PCT, and i really want to use it. I had my induction today.

I did quite a bit of walking today, about 30-45mins. and my feet are killing me. I've bought some trainers (reebok- in the right size) and i thought that would help with the pain and it didnt help much at all.

Every time i stand up, I'm in agony, and i'm starting to walk with a limp.

I am always a bit better in the morning, but i fear that if i exercise in the mornings, i'm going to be in pain all day.

I don't think I'm over doing things as such. I am a big girl, but its only my feet that get tired, nothing else...

Is there anything that could help with the pain? Massages are out of the question- I can't stand anyone (including myself sometimes!) near my feet.

Any advice you could give me will be gratefully received :)

Get yourself a really decent pair of trainers that are made for fitness as sometimes the general trainers aren't really supporting your feet enough

Don't try to do too much too soon take things easy and work your way up

Speak to the fitness instructor at the gym as they can see you and see how you stand when exercising they can advise on how to do things with minimal pain on your joints

Thanks shenzi and hoping :)

i hope that the more i wear these trainers, the less pain i get, because i have had pain for a while. if after a few days, i'll go to JJB and see if they can suggest anything

i'll have a chat with the instructor today. i'm going to the pool (sucks that its only on 3-3.45- cant get much swimming done then!) but i can pop into the gym and have a chat :)

Thanks healthy eater.

i actually think these trainers are helping. they have great support on the ball of my foot, which is where the pain is. im limping less...but its still there a bit

i think cycling is a good idea. i dont have a bike, but i can focus on the bikes when im at the gym, rather than the cross trainer and treadmill :)

Hi little bubblez, I think you should go to a specialist running shop. JJB and all the other trackie selling shops are ok but I don't really think they know a great deal about buying the right pair of proper training shoes. It all depends on if you are under or over pronating when you run and also whether you have fallen arches or high arches that need supporting. My first pair of trainers cost me £85 about 5 years ago. I nearly had a heart attack but since I was suffering with Plantar Fasciitus at the time (which is so painful I can't begin to tell you!) I paid the money because the pain went away instantly, like magic.
Good luck with the exercising though, every little helps on this road we're all on.

I would suggest Sports Direct rather than JJB as Sports Direct have massive choice and lots of discounts.
Have you been to the Dr about your feet, I had a sore heel when I first started exercise and went on for weeks before I went to the Dr.
It strarted affecting my other leg as I was in so much pain I changed the way I walked to ease it, which was even worse cos I then had 2 bad legs lol
Eventually I went to the Dr and was told I had Plantar Facilitis (sore heel!), bit like tennis elbow or housemaids knee.
No treatment, maybe anti inflammatories and time.
Hope it continues to improve

i would say if you are serious about running, avoid sports shops advice LIKE THE PLAGUE and book in to see a podiatrist to get a gait analysis done. They'll be able to get you sorted with insoles (if you need them) and suggest what shoe suits your feet. (does cost money but its the only way to ensure you are getting the right type of shoe and support)

I went to jjb and they just suggested the most expensive shoe to get the most money out of me, with very little questioning about my lifestyle, or why i was having knee pain...

oh god, no- im not at the running stage yet at all. i dont think my joints could cope with my weight!

at the gym id only be walking on the treadmill, and cycling, weights etcetc. but definitely not running yet :)

i'll give these trainers another couple of days then head to a different store. my budget is extremely limited (i'm a student, so i have 2 months to live off what i have left of my loans before the next payment lol) but its definitely something to think about for when i can get a bit more money :)

its worth getting some trainers that are perfect for your feet. the aveage trainers are alright for general use, but for the gym i had to get high arched runners just so my feet wernt sore. i used to wear my dance trainers, these are flat, and offer no support, so my feet were always agony afterwards
