Most effective exercise

I go to the gym at a lunchtime and was wondering what the best exercise to do in a short amount of time is? I have about 40 mins of time to exercise in.

I reckon a good run or bike ride with some strength training too. It's important to have cardio and strength training for the best results, even if you do them on different days.
