New - Need advice, please?

Hi everyone, I'm new to these forums so hope I'm posting in the right place.

Well, I'm 16 years old, 6'1" and weight just over 12 stone. I am not fat, but have a bit of a podgy belly which I want to get rid of.

Luckily, my dad bought an elliptical trainer and a rowing machine - I'm not sure if any of these will benefit me?

-What exercises would benefit me the most if I want to lose my wee podgy belly? :p
-How many calories should I be looking to burn off per day with exercise?
-Should I be trying to 'lose weight' or 'tone up'? (Both the machines have a 'weight loss' and 'cardio' setting. I'm not sure which, if any, help my stomach.
-How much should I be doing per day?
-How long before I begin to see the difference?

That, and anything else you can suggest for losing a bit of belly fat.

Thanks.
~Jack

personally i'd say cardio if it is fat and doesnt just need toning up - you could do some resistance work in there to build up the muscles and remain at the same weight. Crunches will help build up the tummy muscles and apparantly help flatten a tum down!
the rower will do more for your legs i'd imagine.

no need to lose scale weight to get the results you want. You've still got a good few years growing time - so dont diet.

Hi Jack and welcome...:D:D:D

Hello everyone =]

Thanks, rowan.

Yeah, a flat tummy/6pac abs seem too good to be true. :/

I'll try doing crunches (How many would you reccommend per day?) as well as using the elliptical trainer, since (apparently) crunches, on their own, will not give you abs (You need to eat healthy and do aerobic exercises, too[?]). If I keep this up everyday, can I expect to see results within a few weeks?

Hi jack, well I cant really say how many you should do. But you know any you can do without hurting yourself. You might want to look at a more specialised site, there are plenty of body building forums but that doesnt mean to say you have to be a bodybuilder type, i'm sure there are lots of folks on who just want to stay fir and improve their bodies - or even check out your gym???
What I would say is it's great youre taking an active interest inyourself at 16 - what will you be like at 18? well the results could be astounding!!!
Just please dont get too obssessed at your age, enjoy your youth and healthy living;)

Hi Jack and welcome. It's great that you're taking an interest in your body and health at an early age but Rowan's advice is sound ... don't get too obsessed - enjoy life, eat healthily and be active and it'll all fall into place. You're still 2 years away from adulthood yet (biologically speaking) yet so it might be an idea just to get FIT now and SCULPT your bod once it's fully mature.

Have you checked out any body building sites to get advice from those 'in the know'?

RD your grandson is gorgeous -absolutely beautiful - congratulations :)
