Hi all,
Just coming back to the forum after a bit of a break. Been diagnosed as having PCOS this evening and just looking for a place to vent a little I guess, and I remember Minimins being really awesome last time I was around!
I hadn't really ever considered PCOS as anything to do with my weight, and in fact didn't really think of it at all. I went to the doctors a week ago due to a rather embarrassing skin problem, and from there we got into a discussion for other symptoms. Had a fasting blood test last Wednesday, as they suspected it could also be diabetes. Surprisingly enough the diabetes tests came back fine, even though I have a genetic disposition to it, it runs completely through my family. Even more surprising was that my cholesterol was fine! However the hormone tests confirmed PCOS, and my doctor said that there wasn't really any need to send me for scans.
I've been referred to a weight management clinic/program in the area, so I think that's really my starting point. My doctor said that my BMI is too high for them to consider the Pill at the moment, although that's something they can look at again once my weight is on the way down. She said the clinic would look at the bigger picture for my weight, including things like surgery, either bypass or banding.
I can't say I'm really in any shock, or particularly bothered by the diagnosis, it's actually quite a relief to be on the road to getting my weight demons under control. The only thing I'm a little saddened about is the skin condition that I originally went in to sort is more or less untreatable, they can really only prevent it getting worse at this point, which doesn't really help.
I'm wondering whether it's worth trying to sort my diet out for myself for a bit, or just wait for the referral to come through and deal with it then. Part of me is just left thinking, 'What now?'
