New PCOS Diagnosis

Hi all,

Just coming back to the forum after a bit of a break. Been diagnosed as having PCOS this evening and just looking for a place to vent a little I guess, and I remember Minimins being really awesome last time I was around!

I hadn't really ever considered PCOS as anything to do with my weight, and in fact didn't really think of it at all. I went to the doctors a week ago due to a rather embarrassing skin problem, and from there we got into a discussion for other symptoms. Had a fasting blood test last Wednesday, as they suspected it could also be diabetes. Surprisingly enough the diabetes tests came back fine, even though I have a genetic disposition to it, it runs completely through my family. Even more surprising was that my cholesterol was fine! However the hormone tests confirmed PCOS, and my doctor said that there wasn't really any need to send me for scans.

I've been referred to a weight management clinic/program in the area, so I think that's really my starting point. My doctor said that my BMI is too high for them to consider the Pill at the moment, although that's something they can look at again once my weight is on the way down. She said the clinic would look at the bigger picture for my weight, including things like surgery, either bypass or banding.

I can't say I'm really in any shock, or particularly bothered by the diagnosis, it's actually quite a relief to be on the road to getting my weight demons under control. The only thing I'm a little saddened about is the skin condition that I originally went in to sort is more or less untreatable, they can really only prevent it getting worse at this point, which doesn't really help.

I'm wondering whether it's worth trying to sort my diet out for myself for a bit, or just wait for the referral to come through and deal with it then. Part of me is just left thinking, 'What now?'

No harm in trying to do it yourself! I keep trying to diet but my willpower is pretty lame. I'm making it my new yr resolution to lose at least 6 stone by next Xmas, so if u wana join me in that road, and become "diet pals".. I'm open to that. Need all the help and support I can get (an from someone who understands how difficult it is!!)

Hey there,
I was diagnosed with pcos. I too went to the drs with a load of symptoms. One of which was terrible acne.
Oh and gaining 3 stone in one year!
So I
Had the tests & was confirmed. My GP referrers me to skin specialist & said there was nothing that could be done for my
Pcos, & warned that it wiukd be hard to lose the weight!! but should I want children I should go back to them!!!!
Obviously, I was really unhappy about the brush off. So basically I was told to live with it!! Including the extra 3st I had gained!!
I got my appt at the hospital with the skin specialist, who on discovering my conversation with my GP re:pCOS, went mad! & said the skin was probably due to my hormone imbalance.
So then she referred me to a gynacologist @ hospital. Thank god she did!!
2 weeks later I was back at the hospital to have a scan on my ovaries & meet a lovely specialist who helped me!!!!! I
Had some tests done & he advised that I had something called syndrome x
To cut a long story short, he said in order to alleviate my symptoms (extra weight & acne) I would need to lose weight. that it would be very hard & slow process, but not impossible. But I would need to follow a low carb diet. But also that just losing 10% of my weight would alleviate symptoms.
Since id been told that Bingo!!! Weight has been coming off at a rate of knots!!!
I'm at slimming world as I need the support. I follow extra easy plan but with an emphasis on protein & measured carbs & so far I have lost 1 of my 3 stone in 4 weeks!!
My skin has cleared!! (but i fo help it along the way by using an antibacterial face wash'& salycilic acid topical cream to dry the spot) but already in one month my skin has cleared.
So you could try start at a weight loss group, as you may have to wait a little while for your referral. The sooner you start the better you'll feel.

Good luck Hun, with what you decide. Either way you won't have to put up with feeling that way for long

Steph x
