Hi all,

I developed scalp psoriasis about 3 years ago for some unknown reason (no where else on body) and it has gone from being a small patch at the back of my head to more or less covering the whole scalp:cry:. I've tried every specialist shampoo on offer and had various steroid treatments but apart from Dermovate (v strong steroid) nothing will shift it and it's literally doing my head in:mad:

Anyone suffer from this problem or have any ideas? It really makes my life a misery at times.

best i have found is body shop ginger anti dandruff shampoo. its really gentle and although it takes a couple of washes longer to take effect it really works well :) x

hiya
sorry to hear your suffering with this, its really common!

you need a TAR based cream or shampoo.

t-gel is really good, one of my clients suffers with psoriasis very badly and since she has been using t-gel its 100% better, it softens so when you wash your hair nearly all of it comes away (sorry i no that sounds horrible)

theres also a tar based cream you can get from the doctors that is 90% tar and really strong, you only need to use it once a month, might be worth asking about.

anti dandruff shampoos are the worst to use, it would just irritate it more (rach me and you will be having words flower :D) and sting like crazy if theres any open abrasions.

have you been to see your doctor about it before, if so what have they advised?

another thing you could mention to the doctor is to refer you to a trichologist, they can take a swab and come up with the best option for you

xx

When you say anti-dandruff you mean everything except T-Gel? I use that because I get dandruff and other shampoos make my head really itch! T-Gel isn't good for my hair though even though I use the one for dry hair. Is there anything I can do to have a happy scalp AND shiney, knot free hair? :p

t-gel does make your hair feel like straw but you should only use it for scalp conditions like psoriasis!

people use anti-dandruff shampoos when they think they have dandruff when 9 times out of 10 its just a flakey scalp. dandruff is yellow and clumpy and smelly.

the way shampoos like head and shoulders work is when you continually use them they strip 1 layer of skin off your scalp and that makes the "flakeyness" go away for a while, so you stop using that shampoo and then the 'flakeyness' comes back so you start using it again and it strips another layer of skin off, so in the end it makes you have to stick to that shampoo, there so harsh on the scalp!! its like baby shampoo.it gets rid of cradle cap by stripping it off, although its no way near as harsh as head and shoulders, wash and go etc.

have you tried herbal essences? or loreal elvive?

Hi My sistered to suffer with this and she got some lotion from the Doc its kind of oil based and best idea she found was to apply it to scalp before bed and sleep with one of those head towels on or choose a day when your confined to the house. She used to do the treatment once a week and it worked a treat. Afther about 6 months of using it - it just disappeared!! Mind you they say it can go as quickly as it came!

Oh, I don't have dandruff then, just a flaky scalp. Is there nothing you can do about this? I have dark hair and the white flakes can be really noticable if I use normal shampoo. I do use herbal essences as it doesn't make my scalp itch, but still the flakes. Oh the woes of being a woman :p

No mrb gets it too. i'm going to be interested to hear the answer cos he uses anti dandruff stuff and sometimes t gel

My mum suffered with this on her scalp for years. She is also a hairdresser and has tried many different products. When she started using Redken All-soft she said it was like a miracle cure form heaven - absolute resolution and has never had a bad scalp since. If she has to use another shampoo and conditioner, for whatever reason, she can feel it returning.... hope this helps x

Thanks Ladies:p

Some ideas there!

Here are some of the treatments/shampoos I have tried

T-Gel (made it worse)
Alphosyl (useless)
Polytar (ditto)
Herbel Essence (no better, no worse but hair nice and shiny!!:D)
Nizoral (i know it's for dandruff but would try anything)
Various organic specialist shampoos
Cider vinegar (smelt like a chip shop)
Lush organic shampoo bar (god it stank and drove my scalp mad)
Oilatum shampoo (cack!)
Head and shoulders
Betnovate
Dononex
Cocois (stinking coal tar based ointment which gives some temportary relief)
Coconut oil
Dermovate (works a treat but very very strong steroid and not for prolonged use:cry:)
Etrivex (steroid shampoo - nearly sent me mad with itch)
Ojon shampoo (lovely soft hair and quite soft on the scalp but flakes still bad:()

So there you are - quite an extensive list:rolleyes: Am hoping to get referred to a skin specialist coz this is driving me nuts and is so embarrassing with all the flakes falling out (and the itch:sigh:) I have to wash my hair daily just to try and keep both the itch and some of the flakes away but it gets me down:(

Must look up that Redken all sort Loulabell, thanks for the tip:)

Any other ideas welcomed:D

seems like you've tried just about everything. I know when one of the girls had cradle cap as a baby they told me olive oil left on overnight them shampoo'd off-have you tried anything like that-admit i'm clutching at straws for ya-it did work tho

Thanks MommyB - Actually did the olive oil thang too and forgot to put that down:p It defo helps but as soon as you wash the hair it comes back and it was sooooo oily it made a mess of pillows:(

Am gonna have more of a look at that Redken shampoo - have tried most other things - one more won't do any harm i s'pose:sigh:

dont know what others to try but i had it fot years and then it just went away then got it on my elbows and now patches on my legs hopefully it will just disapear for you too

Yea, try Redken Allsoft... it really is amazing. :)

Body shop shampoo was recommended to me by my doctor after i suffered allergic reactions to 3 different types of prescribed lotions as i have very sensitive skin :p
