One for the ladies: birth control pill and weight gain?

i have the implant in ang have gained weight mind you i have always been on the heavy side. HOWEVER i fell off a horse i was schooling 7 years ago and broke my back... then at 16 was diagonsed with spina bifida which was missed at birth. the implant stops my period and means i don't get back pain that results in taking very strong painkillers sometimes even morphine....

devil and deep blue sea

Left to me I would have stayed on the injection if there were no problems, the weight loss alone was a good reason.

But I have the most horrible periods give me fever, fainting, bad cramps, and other horrible side effects.

So the fact that my periods stopped altogether on the injection, and are still absent on the implant, means even though I've gained 3 stone, gona have a real dilemma when its time to take it out!

Never heard of Cilest though, may have to ask about it.

I've had implanon (implant) for nearly a year now, i was on the injection for 2 years before that and microganon (pill) before that, I've always been big but gained most on the implant. The doctor said that it doesnt make you put on wait but increases your appetite so you eat more (thus putting on weight).

Out of all 3 i like my implant the best, i dont have to order more or remember to take it like the pill or go to the doctors every 3 months like the injection. I didnt even think that the implant would have added to my weight gain, i just thought my Slimming World routine wasnt working anymore so thanks guys!! I will just have to try extra hard now!!

Hi ladies, I am a nurse and although I don't work in sexual health I previously specialised in the area. If you are at all worried about your pill you should attend your local family planning clinic. Microgynon 30 is the most common and will usually be prescribed first (cheapest!). Specialist nurses in the family planning clinics usually have a more up to date knowledge base and will consider you're needs more as in individual. I find GPs now tend to run things more as a business than a health practice!

There is contradictory evidence regarding contraception and weight gain. It is usually due to increased appetite or increased water retention but also many reports of weight gain are likely due to be natural weight gain to due the average age of starting it. My mother is convinced I put on weight when I went on the pill and she wont listen when I tell her I put the weight on the year before that!

If you have been prescribed a pill to target acne it may be that you would be prescribed a pill with fairly high levels of progesterone and oestrogen which would make it more likely that you would gain weight.

I have been on nearly every pill going because I find it difficult to regulate my periods and also had the implant which didnt work for me either. If anyone has the implant and wants it removed make sure you are very firm with your nurse and tell her straight that you want it out because they will usually try to make you keep if for as long as possible due to budgets.

If you are worried you should attend your family planning clinic to see if they would prescribe you a pill with a lower dose or possibly opt for another form of contraception.

Hope this info is helpful x
