Orthognathic surgery

A really really long shot but I don't suppose anybody has had this done? it's dental surgery.

No, but really strange as only yesterday I was thinking of looking into it. I had braces when I was a teenager but I still have quite a large overbite (I don't naturally align my top and bottom teeth so my mouth is always open slightly) and I was wondering if another brace would be enough to fix this or whether I would have something more drastic like having my jaw realigned, which sounds very much like this kind of surgery.

hey frances. well i had the braces and everything to prepare for the surgery years ago but my bf at the time persuaded me not to, asking me if i'd feel like me if i looked different etc. and i chickened out. now i know that of course i will feel like me, i will be me, i just won't have as many problems with eating and biting. my top incisors are sore because i have to tear food off rather than biting it off if that makes sense. and yes. even with this problem i managed to eat just plenty to get me to my current weight!! ha. so now i'm back at square one and i want to get it done as eating is a problem. i am lucky. a lot of people who need this kind of surgery have problems with breathing, sleep apnia, and their palate. i don't have any of this. a lot of it is cosmetic but the main reason is my teeth are sore. i can't bite things. and when asked how to stop this my dentist said 'just don't use them'. not using my top front incisors for the rest of my life didn't seem like such a good idea somehow...

It sounds like you do need to look into it if it is giving you pain. I'm sure your OH would understand that. With me it's more cosmetic and a little of the breathing. When you were going to get surgery before, where you going to go private or would you have been able to go through the NHS? Maybe go back and see the specialist, rather than the dentist, and see what can be done.

hey hon. you can get it done on the nhs. well i could at the time. but i was in full time education then. now i can but i'm not sure whether that's because it's through a teaching hospital. it might be worth you checking it out. the old bf isn't my current OH. my current OH is of course worried about it. but only because it's surgery. surgery of any kind has to be taken seriously. he doesn't care about the cosmetic side of things but obviously the pain side of things. i am 18th on the waiting list and that's the way things are. i've seen all the specialists. now i just have to wait... and wait... and wait... ha. but i'm not waiting as long as i could have been in other parts of the country. i just need this specialist to come back from maternity leave so the waiting list goes down fast

Slightly different but I've had quite a bit of cosmetic dentistry it was expensive and I will be paying it of for years to come, but I highly recommend it if it will make you feel better, best thing I did. Good luck!
