Sore Neck Doing Crunches

Well, I have finally got off my backside and started exercising again. But when I do stomach crunches, I always get a sore neck. How do I do crunches properly without hurting my neck?
 
are you doing crunches with your hands behind your head? That can pull your neck. I can never do situps without hurting myself so i just dont do them now lol.
 
All good advice, and another tip is to put your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your front teeth while doing crunches.

always try to leave a fist between your chin & chest when listing up and as Dancing said - find a spot on the ceiling to focus on.
