Urgent - Hypoglycemia

Thanks Acegirl, Sunshine and Ali. I'm on 810 and have been since Wed last week. Not sure if I am in ketosis or not, but the yellow book says a lot of people come out of ketotis on 810, so I assumed probably not.

Am working my way up and am going on hols on 20th September, so was planning on maintaining after that.
Might actually go up to 1000 instead of 810. It's really frightened me.

Sensible idea.

Hope that you aren't too shaken by it. You will be fine.

how worrying for you liz, hope your feeling much better now

i had this happen to me last time round on cambridge, was driving the car at the time ( knew what was going on and got the car pulled over )
my gp insisted i come off and have some tests done ( im insulin resistant, they thought i had crossed over to diabetic )
all results came back fine, never happened again hence me being back on ss

Hi watergirl

I had an experience a bit like this when I was on Lighterlife but foolishly I just rested and ignored it, as I was scared that my doctor (or whichever medical professional I consulted) would try to talk me out of continuing.
My own instinctive feeling as a registered nurse was that it was due to my blood pressure dipping. Like you, I was scared and I imagined that all kinds of things could have been happening, no doubt exacerbated by my prior experience of working in acute hospital settings. I wouldn't want to attempt to offer any nursing advice (I have a specialist community role in the management sector so I haven't been clinically 'hands on' since 1999) but the advice you have already been given appears very sensible and is what I would do now if it was me.
I do hope that you will be feeling better soon and send my good wishes x

Hi Liz, good job you can get advice on here rather than rely on NHS Direct! I think going up to 1000 is a good plan. The body is good at telling you when it needs more fuel, I felt the same with my lovely boil and sore skin - not quite on the same scale I know but I immediately felt the benefits of even SS+ and now 810. Rest easy and make sure you space out your food throughout the day. X

Hope your feeling better Liz. That must have been a very scary experience for you and your bf. Get lots of rest and see your gp tomorrow. Big Hugs xx

I get dizzy at times getting up etc after sitting down but didnt put it down to ss'ing ?

Hmmmm

I feel ok 95% of the time though

All v worrying aint it

I used to get this with Atkins. Not nice is it. It did pass though.
Would recommend you speak with a dr (cos I have to recommend that first :D), but since the NHS haven't been much help, I guess they reckon it's just a passing thing.

At least if you can recognise the symptoms you'll know to grab a tetra quick.

Hopefully it wont happen again with spacing out the shakes. :hug99:

Thanks so much everyone for taking the time to reply. It is a relief to know I'm not the only one who has had this happen before. I am pretty much a normal BMI now and I do enjoy doing quite a high level of exercise (although haven't last few days).

I think that considering the amount of exercise I currently do and would like to do, I have decided to move up to 1200 rather than stay on the 810. It's a little premature, but this has given me a fright and it's just made me think that I am ready to face life with food finally.

My hols are in 3 weeks anyway, so I want to get used to making good choices and hopefully the exercise and added calories will boost my metabolism. I never wanted to SS or SS+ and then go straight into eating heavily in Orlando.

I can't it over with my CDC, but I'm sure that she'd agree with me and she knows my goal from day 1 was fitness and improved health. I guess I'm just looking for a bit of reassurance now (as I can't talk to CDC) that I will be okay going to 1200 and doing exercise and am not going to mess up all the good work I've put in. I'm prepared to gain a little as I eat carbs, and I am thinking sensibly, but part of my head still thinks 'you'll put it all back on.' Is this normal thinking?

Glad to see that you are hopefully feeling a bit better if you have had a rest and posting again.
I forgot to add (but luckily others did in their posts) that my 'funny turn' only ever happened once.
Unfortunately I don't know enough about the plans to respond to your question.

Thanks Blingbabe. From what peope have said it hopefully is a one time experience. As it's happened to me when I also wasn't on CD I think it's perhaps just one of those things.

The whole thing has just made me think about things I guess. I'm very comfortable with my weight and size now, but would like to tone up and am both looking forward to that and slightly nervous!

Hi Liz,

I get this quite regularly when I haven't eaten enough and have learned to make sure I always have some food to hand (I keep a spare bar in my handbag). I seem to be sensitive to blood sugar as eating too much sugar (leading to rapid increase in blood sugar levels) triggers a really bad migraine whereas not eating enough makes me feel light headed and dizzy to the point of passing out. Fortunately since being on CD I've not once had migraine and only feel light headed if I haven't spaced out my shakes properly.

I think moving up the plan is sensible as you are a healthy weight and considering that you are exercising you really need the extra calories.

It might be worth moving up to the 1000 plan for 3-4 days before moving to 1200 so that the move is gradual.

I really hope it was just a one off but it might be worth keeping a bar or a small box of raisins (or similar) in your handbag just in case for the next few weeks.

Thanks Alli, think I'll keep some tetras with me at all times from now on!

Thanks Shelley :) Managed to get hold of my CDC's CDC (the one who sponsored her) and she agreed about going up to 1200, so am pleased I've been able to talk it through with her.

Thanks Acegirl, Sunshine and Ali. I'm on 810 and have been since Wed last week.

I'm not familiar with this diet, but I'm assuming you're eating 810 calories per day?! Please dont take offense, but when you're eating well below the bare minimum needs of 1200 calories per day, I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised that the body does not like being starved and reacts violently accordingly. Weight can be lost just as easily eating more. It might take a bit longer, but at least you're not having fainting spells from induced starvation..

Acegirl, no offence taken, but this was posted on the Cambridge Diet forum, which is a medically created very low calories diet (VLCD) based on the principles of putting the body into mild ketosis whilst maintaining the correct levels of vitamins and minerals to stop the body going into starvation.

The diet was created by doctors and is very well known. Please do have a read through the forum if you are interested. Surviving on 810 calories a day without using complete meal replacement packs that contain essential vits would be dangerous you are right.

I was surprised that my body has reacted like this because I've been doing the diet for 20 weeks without this reaction. It happened to me previously when not on the diet and CD generally stabilises blood sugar.

Wow! I've only just read this thread. How scary for you WG! I'm glad you had your partner there to help you.
I've been having 'head spins' when I get up too quickly, but thankfully nothing like what you've experienced. I'll keep my fingers cross for you, that it was a one time deal.
Hugs

Thanks WP :) xxx
