Hi everyone, im new (today) to this site and started slimming world (on my own) a week and a half ago. I am yet to see if it has worked for me as i am attempting to weigh in on saturday morning. My friend who is doing amazingly on the plan is helping me and i have all the literature.

I am a type 1 diabetic so everything i eat i have to weigh to know what my carbs are to know how much insulin i need per meal and subsquently it notes the calories

I have eaten over 2,000 calories today, at least 3rd was fruit...now is this the idea? I know they say you dont count calories but on another side i read the point of superfree thirds are to stop you eating as much of the other stuff, in another breath it says you can eat as much of these foods as ou wish?

Can someone run me through this?

Hi hun, welcome to sw!

Can i ask what kind of fruit you ate? I dont mean to be rude, and I hope I dont come across as such, but 660 calories of fruit is an awful lot.
With SW, free food is free, but you still need to practice portion control. Overeating on anything will result in weight gain, you gotta listen to your appetite.

Maybe tell us what you ate today and we can give you some pointers?

ETA: just realised that you meant that 1/3 of your intake was fruit not a 3rd of your calories!!! :booboo:

I had a banana with my fruit and fibre and skimmed milk at brekkie (healthy a and b)

Lunch jacket with beans, followed by a fat free yog and bowl of fruit (mango, pineapple, melon, grapes)

Dinner, ham,egg and syn free chips with grilled mushrooms and followed by (kiwi, grapes, passionfruit and mango)

All that adds up to 2100 cals whereas when i was on the calorie counting i tried not to eat over 1500 so this seems like a real huge jump but im following the plan on EE.

Ive been told off for calorie counting but it doesnt make sense to me. I dont usually have two lots of potato in a day so its not as usually as high. I dont understand though how the plan stating you can eat free and superfree whenever, works?? That is however how its worded 'no limits'

Did you feel you really needed all that?
It seems alot to me to have fruit and yogurt after 2 full meals.

What I do is I have a break half way a big glass of cold water and I only eat til the just starting to full feeling. I always feel satisfied but never eat til I'm stuffed full.

Sw does work, it's low fat plan not a low calorie plan.
Low calorie plans work but also burn muscle not fat and not sustainable as your body starts to go into starvation n stores fat.
Sw is not the same.

Try having ur superfree before ur meal not after as a "starter." then stop when ur filling up.
So what I'd do is eat my fruit salad, then my beans n potato but have half the portion of beans and potato.

The point of super free is to reduce the amount of free foods on your plate though, if you're shoving it in after your meals just to get it in then there really is no point, you'd probably be better off not having it! Try filling 1/3 of your plate with salad/veg

To be honest I don't think what you've had is that much. when I was on slimmingworld before I had plenty of days eating loads of fruit and I'm pretty sure my calories some days have been huge.I know it can be off putting to see all the calories but stick with it an see what your losses are like.with calorie counting a lot of people just count calories and ignore everything else, for example I could have 15 bags of quavers and still be under a "calorie goal" obviously that's an excessive example but people don't take much notice of fat and salt etc .where as the free foods on sw are very low in fat,and your syns are there for your higher fat treats.
You haven't weighed yet so have faith.I wouldn't at all lower the amount you're eating unless you feel you're eating more purposely because you can.
When the weight comes off and you're losses ain't so great then tweak it.but give it a chance first.
Good luck xx

Thanks everyone. Im someone who enjoys big meals and i dont usually snack as it makes the sugar levels hard to monitor.

I suppose the types of food i enjoy are hard to eat with veg etc... Ham,egg, chips and....brocolli? I eat the fruit after because before i would have had something unhealthy, ie chocolate and im always hungry after a meal. And i suppose if i did have a third brocolli or whatever at dinner i would still eat that bowl of fruit after. If i have a hypo i have to eat and fruit is great because its unlimited whereas before i would just grab something not as healthy and feel guilty.

I only have a stone and a half to loose, its not a lot and im trying out this plan to see if it works and prevents the hunger i always feel. If i loose and i have not been eating crap, as well as not feeling hungry then its right for me.

I suppose i wait till saturday and if it hasn't worked then i know to make a couple changes... I will keep you updated. Thanks for all the advice xx

It must be unnerving for you hayboo, being used to counting calories and coming to Slimming World but have faith in the plan and give it a go for a while, it has worked for me and I still enjoy loads of foods without calorie counting. I agree with the above, though, try incorporating 1/3 superfree into your mains, if that's challenging then have your fruit beforehand to make things as easy as possible to follow. You can do it! Good luck x

All you can do is carry on and see if you loose. My cals are always way over what I'd eat if I were calorie counting and I managed to loose over 2 stone to get to target, trust the plan :) I'd say don't cal count but obviously you have to, just ignore the fact that they're over what you're used to though and enjoy what you're eating.

As you're a diabetic type 1, you shouldn't really be doing this on your own.
You really need to have a proper understanding of how the plan works, in a group, under the help of a consultant; and then be working with your diabetic care team, GP or diabetic nurse.
You will recieve a booklet to show how it works with a diabetic lifestyle. xx

I completely understand what you are saying. Before I joined slimming world I was following the Dukan diet so no carbs except 2tbs of oat bran a day no fruit and veg only every other day. Now on SW potatoes, pasta rice etc are free and fruit and veg are super free. For the first few days I really struggled to eat carbs and have syns but I made myself have some. My first weigh in was last night and I lost 3.5lb. I was so happy.

I still don't get how all I was eating was protein and low fat dairy before but now I'm eating all sorts and the weight still comes off.

I have to point out though, I did have 2 terrible weeks of eating everything unhealthy between Dukan and slimming world. I didn't just switch from one to the other.

I have started sw again this week after being on ww. Last time I was on SW I was on Extra Easy and I lost a 0.5lb to 2lb a week and I had a similar menu to you. However, you start to doubt your self. All week I have been on a red week and my brain is saying I am eating over the calorie count, but then I stop and kick myself and think; stop calorie counting and see what happens at first weigh in.

Remember, everyones body is diffrent in size, different in motabalisum speeds. What works for you, might not work for someone else. Good Luck - sure you will do great :)

Thanks everyone. I am genuinely eating 1/3rd superfree in my plates the vast majority of the time...yesterday was probably a bad example :)

Slimming world is healthy eating and causes no problems with diabetes...in fact my nurses are far happier im on this plan than any other. Whatever you eat is based on carb counting so there is no need for any specialist treatment if you are a controlled diabetic on insulin. I would want a consultant who doesn't have the technical knowledge of the disease discussing it as half the time what they suggest is against what my specialist would suggest... Had this at weight watchers!

Thanks again everyone for your time.

I will report back either way xx

Eat as you are, give it 3-4 weeks, count calories only for your insulin ignore it from sw point. And if uve lost no weight then we can all help you look again. :)

i dont think you have eaten to much at all, superfree food is superfree eat as much as you want, i have half a huge watermelon every day along with lots of other fruit have 15 syns and my meals and i still lose weight,
my daughter has cystic fibrosis and diabetes that is related to the CF as her pancreas cant produce insulin so i know what you mean about the carb counting, no one can tell you any different to what you already know, your count your carbs, then inject the right amount of insulin, dosnt matter what food you eat if your having the insulin with it :)

Slimming World is an absolutely brilliant healthy eating plan, but doing it on your own without a consultant and care team working together....? Consultants are trained to follow the advice & recommendations given to you, they wouldn't work against that & you're the expert on your own condition, it puts you in control all the way. You would also have all the up to date info so you stay healthy while losing weight. For example, if sugar content in fruit is making blood sugar high, changing snacks to savoury, or not snacking in between meals, going too low, adding carbohydrates at regular intervals, and keeping snacks available to avoid hypo's, that won't effect your weight loss. Also, as you lose weight, your medication may need to be reduced or changed. It's great your nurse is on board, but the other part of the triangle is missing. My mum is a type 2, and has lost 3 stone, very slowly over 2 and a half years, and her medication is greatly reduced as her bm's are normal. When the gp was worried about her losing weight, and sent her for thyroid checks, she was able to say, I've been following Slimming World and following my nurses advice and it's being carefully monitored. But it's not safe for you to follow people's help on here when they're not trained.xx

I am a type 1 which is very different to type 2.

I have had this condition many many years and i can promise its fine. What i eat i weigh fir carbs and if i hypo i eat, there is nothing else to consider. I am not meaning to sound rude but unless you had type 1 you wouldnt understand. It makes no odds what i eat. Nothing a sw consultant could tell me would be anything i didnt know.

If i loose weight and my insulin requirement changes that great but are part of your ongoing treatment you change your requirements, just as you do with the seasons.

I am just trying to work though calories, not the diabetes...the control of that is near perfect, unlike the weight :):)
