what makes it a syn?

its mainly fat content - thats why ex lean mince (less than 5% fat) is free but lean (usually 15% fat) is synned.

Its also to do with calorie density. A bar of chocolate is about 200 calories at least, or 10 syns. It won't fill you up at all. However, a bowl of spinach & aubergine dhal is probably about 300 calories, but will fill you up for ages. hence why one is synned & the other is a free meal.

Its also to do with sugar content too - a fat free yogurt with sugar in it is going to have more syns, due to the fact that sugar has calories.
