can the cd weaken your immune sytem?

kazbro

jelly belly
just wondering if it can or not
or is it packed with enough of everything to keep the immune sytem at its best?

well...considering you are armed with 100% of your vits and minerals I'd have to say no.....it's doesn't weaken your immune system.

Doesn't mean you can't get ill though....

Im not a cc but would think not as cd has all the minerals and vitamins that the body requires. Do you think that it may be happening to you?
Maybe you should contact your cc and see what she says.
:)

The diet contains high protein and is low in fat and has been designed to provide ALL vitamins and minerals your body needs each day.

The only way would be if u were using less packs than what u should be. Which is 3 a day or if u are a man or a women who is 5ft 8 or taller u need 4 a day to get all your vitamins and minerals your body needs each day.

Hope this helps. x

only reason i was asking for was my brother is now interested in doing cd
he had afew years of very ill health and through his prescribed drugs and hospital stays he has put on 4 stone

he is fit now on know meds but does need to keep his immune sytem going well

thanks coley for getting back to me

maybe he is best to see his gp 1st

i thought it was o.k for him as you say everything is in it

Personally, I still take a mulitvit. The simple reason for this is that, yes, CD contains 100% of the RDA of vits and minerals, BUT the RDA is not necessarily enough to support your immune system. For example, the RDA for vit C is 60mg. This is based on the figure needed to stop you getting scurvy, but not enough to help protect you against colds, etc, where you need at least a couple of hundred mg a day.

However, you can overdose on vits which is really no good - too much vit c can speed up and increase iron absorption which isn't good for you.

Same with other vits and minerals. You are getting the RDA. If you required over that for protection against colds etc, it would be a higher level or your doctor would have recommended it.

A few hundred mg?? Where did that figure come from? I'd quite like to read up on that.

I don't believe for one second that in our normal daily lives we take in the perfect amount of all our vits and minerals through our diet- so I wouldn't panic too much.

All in all, you're going to be better nutritioned on this diet than you would be eating normal food.

I would still go see the gp though, make sure he's ok and see if the doc will keep an eye on him.

xx

I have Lupus (an auto immune disease which lowers my immune system) and had partial liver failure last year due penicillin so I looked into the immune issues a LOT before starting CD. Not only were my GP and specialists happy but they were impressed that I would get all my vits, mins and nutrients from the shakes. of course they monitored me closely. and the great news - my lupus symptoms are the lowest they have been in a decade, I am fit and healthy and my liver is at 98% function now.

so I would say, go for it!! once a GP checks of course.

thank you all
he`s done really well so far been healthy for over a year but now needs to shift the weight he gained
he was thinking of doing atkins but i though this to be a better diet
spose his gp will pont him to the right one

Hi Coley,

I too was intersted in Vitamin C, cos as a smoker I know that I should really be intaking more vitamin C than the RDA (smoking does something to Vitamin C, not sure what, but I know it does kill it off or something, not a doctor or nutritionist, so don't really know!!!!) I found this:

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) dosage, intake, recommended daily allowance (RDA)

The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin C in nonsmoking adults is 75 mg per day for women and 90 mg per day for men. For smokers, the RDAs are 110 mg per day for women and 125 mg per day for men. A dose of 200 milligrams daily is almost enough to maximize plasma and lymphocyte levels. Increased intakes of vitamin C are required to maintain normal plasma levels under acute emotional or environmental stress such as trauma, fever, infection, or elevated environmental temperatures. Full blood and tissue saturation is achieved with daily intakes of 200-500mg per day (in 2-3 divided doses).

From this site: Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) - sources, benefits, dosage, deficiency, overdose, toxicity

just wondering if it can or not
or is it packed with enough of everything to keep the immune sytem at its best?

I've always had a low immune system, anything going about i'd catch it. Since being on VLCD i've been weller (...strange word...lol) than i have in years. Although some weeks back i was unwell for awhile & was advised to come off by my doctor (although it didn't think it had anything to the diet)

To be really honest i think i became unwell because previously i'd been on LL for 100, went into management (returning to food) but done it all wrong! I gave up the packs straight away and wasn't getting my minerals and vitamins.....this was my own stupidity not LL:confused: .

This time i will be doing it properly....xxx
