Woooo well done Dawn. Great day and so nice to hear you had a nice day. Pleased for you. Any plans for your few days off? Enjoy x

Dawn,

I think you should come back this weekend :) I had a great time last weekend ! How long did it take you to get back in the end ? Maybe we could meet up somewhere half way in the future ??

Well done on the walking. How is the week going in terms of weight ? Are you likely to have a net STS or even a loss by the time you weigh in ??

Can't believe it's Thursday already (just realised that as I wrote that, it's not actually thursday, it's only Wednesday today - oops) ! I'm off to bed soon (honest). Managed to switch my light off yesterday at midnight - it's a miracle :D

Thanks Penny xx

Haven't really got any firm plans for tomorrow or Friday, but Gwyn and I are going to Nottingham on Saturday. Gwyn has a meeting there (he's president of N'pton table tennis league and it's the big agm at a hotel there, so we're going to make a bit of a weekend of it by staying over :D

Of course we booked this up LONG before I received Gails offer of a meet and OBVIOUSLY I would rather be seeing her! ;) xx

Blown out for a table tennis AGM. Who'd have thought it.................;)

Another meet would suit me just fine hun!! We got home at 9 o'clock so it took us around 2 1/2 hrs from yours, which I thought was great. I suppose if we were too meet half way it would certainly make it easier... Have to have a think of somewhere suitable :)

I think the weight is coming off :fingerscrossed: but as my scales are a bit temperamental I'm a bit reluctant to be too confident! I think I'm about the same weight as I was pre Lakes, and if that's the case at wi tomorrow I will be :wee:

Wednesday...Thursday...
what's 24 hours between friends lol!!! :8855:

Aww thanks Becs!!!

And thanks for the doggy offer lol!!!

I do love labs...but as we're getting on a bit  we have to get something small now. We used to really struggle with my big dog Simba when she was ill, trying to move her, get her in the car, get her to the vets etc. and as I work pt a lot of the care will be on Gwyns shoulders. As he's 72 now, I want a dog that doesn't need too much exercise, and isn't heavy to lift when necessary, and can't knock or pull Gwyn over!!! I know he won't thank me for saying that but it's a real consideration for me, and as it's me who's really wanting another dog, I feel really responsible that we don't get one that we can't cope with! And I'm hoping to take the new doggy everywhere we go, so I think it will be much easier with a little one!

Have you got some piccys of your pups???

Here are my two girls that we lost recently...

I like Jack Russells too. :) How about a Cavalier Spaniel Dawn? We had a lovely one once although we mostly have retrievers and labs.

I like your signature of monthly losses and have copied your idea! Much clearer and more encouraging, well yours is, mine says, 'Could do better', sigh!

We had a lovely Jack Russell Terrier when we were little, and she was a beauty, and used to come everywhere with us, including on holidays, and always travelled on the back window ledge :)
I like the terriers with scruffy coats, like she was, as opposed to the smooth coats, probably because they look cuddlier.
Of course, my heart lies with a springer spaniel, but that does not fit your requirements, he need lots of exercise, bounds around the house, and has pulled my father over when he has been walking him!

I do have one friend with a very quiet, laid back Springer, must be the first one I've ever heard of! They are great dogs though, I really like them.

We are currently dog-sitting a 2yr old springer (and have been for about 3 months) and he can be a right nightmare!!! When he is tired and cuddly he is perfect, but when he is hyper he can be awful. I find some nights I'm just too tired for his energy and he gets left in the kitchen because I can't handle his constant bounding about. I do feel sorry for him that way, but it makes me realise I would love a dog of my own, but I'd never have one that was so energetic.

His owners are moving into their new house next week tho, and I know I'll be sad when he goes, altho i am looking forward to having a clean house again. I can't believe how much hair he sheds every single day!!! I can't wait to finally get rid of all the slabbers from my lovely leather sofa too!!! He licks everything!!

Hi ladies,

Have to admit I have never been a fan of little dogs  I've always liked 'dog dogs' iykwim  ...lab, gsd, mastiff, husky etc. but my whole outlook on little ones was changed when my dear Auntie Jose entrusted us with her beautiful little shih tzu Sophie, while she was in hospital. A couple of months before, we had had a strange conversation with her where she told us how worried she was that if anything was to happen to her, she wouldn't know who would take Sophie as she was 11 and needed daily medication and a lot of care and money spent on her. Of course Gwyn and I said straight away that we would look after her, and Jose knew we'd do our best for her as we still had our other dog Simba at the time who was nearly 14 and who we really loved. Anyway, Jose made us promise that we'd take Sophie if the need ever arose, & we carried on as normal for a while. What we didn't know was that Jose was being investigated for bowel cancer at the time, and that's why she was so insistent on sorting Sophie out.
So we took Jose for some tests, & I was with her when she was diagnosed with a very small bowel cancer, which we were told was totally operable and curable, and she received a date for her op. However before the op, she began to get quite het up and distressed, so she was admitted as an emergency and we took Sophie to stay with us for a while. The hospital decided to operate, but with a different surgeon to the one who was scheduled to do it as he was off sick, and it appeared the op was a success. But after a few days, Jose became very sick, and a scan revealed the bowel had ruptured and caused severe blood poisoning. Despite an emergency operation to remove the damaged area and being ventilated in intensive care, my lovely auntie died. It was a devastating time for us all, and should never have happened. On further investigation, it was found that the first surgeon had failed to sew the bowel up properly, and left the country when Jose became ill.

So we ended up with this little bundle of fluff who was pining for her mum and wouldn't leave the house...she spent all her time looking for Jose  But we spent a lot of time with her, and soon she latched on to me as her new mummy and followed me everywhere. Sophie didn't really have anything to do with Simba as Jose had rehomed her at the age of 4 (through a charity organisation) from a breeder who no longer wanted her as she was too old to breed from  so poor Sophie hadn't been socialised at all and didn't know how to interact with other dogs or even how to play :sigh: But they had a happy tolerance of each other.

Anyway, this little shiddy just wriggled her way into all our hearts to the point where we felt we'd always had her. She was adorable, such a happy girl who was so desperate to please! And she loved her cuddles. But everything was torn apart at Christmas, shortly after we had lost Simba, when she was diagnosed with mouth cancer, and she died a couple of months later

Now I know we can't ever replace Sophie or Simba, and we wouldn't want to, but we are missing having a dog around so much. We decided to wait to see if we really wanted the responsibility of another one, and we feel now that we do. And as it needs to be small enough for us to take in the car (Gwyns is an Astra and mine's a peugeot so not very big) we were thinking about another shih tzu. I'd never have given them a second look if it hadn't have been for our experiences with Sophie! As a breed, they're fairly small but stocky and robust, and terrific with children. We are well acquainted with the common ailments they have as Sophie was blind (keratitis) and we had to put grease in her eyes twice a day. She had medication for the arthritis in her shoulders, and she had a skin allergy. She damaged a cruciate ligament for which we had pain killers and paid for a dog physio to come to the house  And we kept the same home dog groomer that Jose used to use, and who Gwyn actually taught at school lol!

Despite all of these problems, she was the most loving, affectionate, cheerful, beautiful little girl...and that's why we are thinking of getting a shih tzu. It make sense really as we have learned so much about them in the 2 years we had Sophie. But...nothings definite yet...we're just starting to have a look around now as we really want to make the right decision xx

Dawn - what a heart breaking story about both your auntie and both dogs.

I'm a cat lady myself - as you will all no doubt have sussed from my avatar - but we dogsit for 2 separate friends when they are on hols.
Jill has a dalmation (totally mad and uncontrollable), a whippet (beautiful old dog who just runs for miles on her own after a ball) and a small Iberian Podenco (follows the whippet araound as though she was attached by a piece of string) PS the small Podenco is similar to a Jack Russell.
Sheila has 2 Rhodesian Ridgebacks (frightening on first sight but as soft as putty) and a springer/border collie cross (image the amout of running this lady can do!).

Have you though about going to a rescue for your new dog Dawn? There are so many that are overrun with unwanted puppies of all breeds, shapes and sizes.

Enjoy your new puppy Dawn!
