Exante Veggies

Hi all. Have seen quite a few posts from people who are vegetarian so thought it would be useful to start a thread.

Obviously we have to think more carefully about AAM, ketosis, protein etc.

Also I think it would be interesting to discuss the veggie downfalls as I am sure I am not the only one who gets asked how I am overweight if I am a vegetarian!

Look forward to hearing from other veggies.

Was wondering that as well.., cheese ? !

Yes great topic . We are not vegetarian but tend to eat a lot of vegetarian meals .
I also ear a lot of pulses and quorn ....yeah that's all the good stuff....

Great thread MrMc.

Veggie myself so was a little worried about WS, maintaining and what I am going to eat! Used to be a big carb eater.

I get asked why are you overweight if you are Vegetarian. Seems to be some misconception that we all munch carrots all day long!

I notice we are from the same area too, I live near the lovely Sherwood Forest too.

Thanks for starting this thread :)

Thanks to MrMoJo, Mamakash and A Thinner Me.

Have been vegetarian for almost 30 years, and in my case I think it has a lot to do with Carbs.

Typically as vegetarians our protein sources are quite specialised. A trip to an eatery will show typical meat eating diets with between 30-50% of there meal made up of protein (meat), whilst a quick reccie at the Veggie option shows pasta, bread, and substitutes that are are typically processed vegetables with little or no protein.

At home it is easier to make better more informed choices, I however have really realised that even when I add a protein substitute to my meal it is in no way equivalent to the amount of meat or fish protein.

This has been quite a reality check.

Last week I was away on a trip to see friends and took some days off of the diet. When I looked back at what I ate the amount of protein was absolutely minimal, and what bit there was was surrounded by processed Carbs.

I think that the process of weaning back onto regular food needs some careful consideration for vegetarians as it is not as straight forward as it seems. I guess thats why the Atkins diet doesn't work for us! ;)

Looking forward to opening this up.

Thank you so much for starting this thread - and yes I do get looks when I say I am a veggie as I am overweight - But as you say Pasta and other carb full food make up a huge chunk of the diet I also love cheese and if I could give that a miss I would be a lot slimmer lol

Would be great to see how each of us manages to readjust to eating again - that and sharing ideas! Thanks again and good luck on your journey :)

yay lots of veggies :) nice to know there's lots of us in the same boat.

and i 'third' that about the cheese.. love it more than i should haha. it has definitley not helped my weight!

it's true as well about the amount of carbs in veggie options. eating out as a vegetarian on a diet is hard unless you stick to salad. and even meat free salads seem to be hard to find round here these days!!

Hi I'm not doing Extante but Cambridge but I'm a vegetarian. Like you said its the carbs (pasta/rice etc) and cheese, is the reason why I'm overweight, also you are right when you go out for a meal the vegetarian option is always pasta/some sort of pie (pastry) and high fat, the chefs obviously have no imagination!

I don't like meat alternatives and use pulses as my protein source and I will eat a little tuna is pushed. (I'm a vegetarian because I don't like the texture of meat not because of the animals, although I do care about them)

I don't eat meat or fish. My old ways were cheese & potato pie, rice dishes and things on toast and cereals, I ate very little! I'm a very fussy eater, and a lot veggie meals I didn't like. Give me a plate of boiled veg and I'd eat the lot, I actually ate nothing but veg for just over 2 weeks and and all I lost was 1lb...crazy!!

I like Quorn products, but tend to stay away due to the high fat content in them, I gave up cheese 14 months ago, and I'm never eating it like I did again (cheese is the devil lol)

I have aam coming up in 2 weeks and I've no idea what I'm going to eat, I hate eggs, but I could probably cope with an omelette or scrambled egg.

I detest the smell and look of fish and can't bring myself to eat it. The reason why I don't eat meat, isn't because of the animals (not because I don't love animals, I really do) but it's the taste and texture and look of it, that I just can't handle.

If I really had to, I could make myself eat chicken, only the pure white meat and maybe even force down a piece of ham... if I really had to :(

Hey Bunnyhops your the same as me, don't like taste/texture of meat!, I don't like eggs either but like you could probably manage an omelette, not sure about scrambled eggs though.

i'm the same with textures.. the thought of stringy chicken makes me feel ill haha. although my first reason is the animal part of it.
and you never know - eggs may become appealing once you're off the exante. i hadn't eaten them for about 8 years but all of a sudden i really fancied boiled egg and soldiers a few months ago and i've been eating them ever since.

Trying to research a lot of low carb recipes ready for AAM week - I am a long way off maintaining! But most of them come up as low carb but when I check the ingredients on the ketogenic foods list on this forum, a lot of them are on the "don't have" or "have very limited amounts" lists? Is there some sort of a rule of thumb to follow about the percentage of carbohydrate in a food that is acceptable on exante?

I think it is complicated when we start to throw "natural " vegan or vegetarian options into the mix as not all carbs act the same way . I personally would avoid processed quorn as it is high in fat /cheese and minimise eggs but explore the more traditional options . I did a detox vegan diet 5 years ago and ate pulses and veggies ... So red bean stew with spices/ lentil variations etc etc . Also some tofu etc . The weight dropped off me and I had thought pre exante of doing this .... Certainly may be an option post exante . ......... I needed the exante discipline and reassurance re vitamins and minerals this time around (recovering from long illness) .

Pulses are easier if you like spicy foods .....but any good vegan cookbook will have loads of recipes

:)

You mean you don't eat carrots all day ling?

Seriously though, I don't rate the 'fake' meat and I can very much see why vegetarian meals are very carby. I personally have problems eating red meat, usually it's White meat only for me. I'd be really interested in some veggie low carb meals too.

I always wanted to produce a cook book called The Fat Vegetarian (wont be able to pretty soon). I love the whole food experience and that's why I'm on Exante. I particularly like Indian and chinese cooking and use a lot of canned chinese mock meats (developed for Buddhists) on my AAM week - very tasty.

I have found to eat out and remain in ketosis near impossible. I live in Shropshire farming country and most people look at me like I'm an alien because I don't eat meat. Brighton, where I lived before, was so much easier with lots more than just a token veggie meal on the menu. I feel I have gone back to the '70s in so many ways ;)

I've found eating indian food out is the easiest, mushroom sagwala and paneer are a fav. Though it seems the norm to have a portion of chips with your curry in the Midlands :(

Any other suggestions welcome.
