Exerise and Being Disabled

    I suffer from Chronic Fibromyalgia and Chronic Osteoarthritis and find doing any exercise almost impossible.
    I try to manage gentle stretching exercises, which is something I do several times a day to try to ease my pain.
    My muscle tone is bad since becoming ill, but not sure if or how I can improve this.
    Swimming is said to be good, but repetitive movements just make things worse.
    I'm sure there are some of you here who are disabled, but was wondering what exercise are you able to manage and if you had any suggestions?

    Hiya. I know it's probably not much help in terms of what you asked, but I have ME and osteoarthritis, and don't exercise at all because what limited energy reserves I have are needed for my full time job. But I've managed to lose 9.5 stone, so if you were worried about not losing weight without exercise, please don't as it's very achievable. Obviously I'm not saying don't try exercising if you want to and think you can, as it's so good for your overall health, but don't be concerned about not being able to lose weight without it. :) xx

    Would something gentle like pilates be possible? It would help with muscle tone/strength and is something you could start off doing for short periods of time and slowly increase it.

    For swimming a float or woggle could help ease some of the pressure of repetitive movements. Would the water reduce these effects as well as it will be supporting your body? What about something like aqua aerobics? Maybe speak to an instructor and see what they think?

    Have you spoken to a physio about wanting to do some exercise? That would be my first port of call as they'll know exactly what you are capable of, what would work best etc. (I have multiple sclerosis, and physios have sorted me out in the last year, and managed to get me from fairly immobile with almost no muscle strength, to walking - okay, not far, or unsupported, but still! - and going to the gym to build my muscles up even more)

    It is possible to lose weight without exercise, but increasing muscle tone and avoiding atrophy is important for your overall health, not just as an aid to weight loss. Just do it safely, with professional supervision to begin with ;)

    Thank you Aesa. I did speak with Physio but found it all too painful on the day and for about 4 days later found it that painful I was in tears mostly. I just feel at a loss. xxx

    What about water based activities? Takes away the gravity and gives you a lot more freedom?

    Thank you hon, that's very kind. :) I know you want to do some sort of exercise, which is brilliant if you can, but I just wanted to reassure you that you can certainly lose weight without it, or I'd still be 21.5 stone (or probably more!). :) xx

    I also have Fibromyalgia and ME and I've found walking in the water helps a lot. I vary the steps for each length so it's not repetative, big long strides, the fast-ish fairy steps, then ones on my tippy toes.....then I wallow in the hot tub for ages as I find damp heat very helpful.

    I'm thinking of getting some water weights or water gloves so I can excercise my arms too.

    I only started with about 10 lengths and I felt great after and the next day I had proper achey excercised muscles
