Expectations ...

(from a e-newsletter I get)

Do you dream of a day when you won’t ever have to think about managing your weight? Do you imagine that once you finally lose the weight your worries about food will be gone? Do you wish that it would all just go away? If you do, you’re not alone.

Expectations lead to disappointments. That’s why it’s so important to have realistic expectations.

  • It is realistic that you will get better and better at dealing with your emotions without food.
  • It is realistic to believe that one day you will be the one that’s in charge of what and how much you eat.
  • It is realistic to know that with the right help and information you can lose the weight you want.

  • it’s unrealistic to believe you will ever get it perfect.
  • It’s unrealistic to believe that you will never turn to food for comfort again.
  • It’s unrealistic to think that your weight will not fluctuate at all. Think of a doctor’s scale or a balance. It is always moving a little bit.

As you work towards leaving emotional eating behind, you will continue to make little adjustments in your lives. The more realistic your expectations, the less you will be disappointed. The goal is to view your weak spots, not with judgment or harshness, but with curiosity. The moments when you are tempted to return to food for comfort are actually red flags from your heart and mind, pointing out that you need a little bit of understanding, some more gentleness, and a dash more self-acceptance.
