Fat, vegetarian hating consultants?

Can anyone tell me what the latest slimming world plan is really like for veggies? I always used to use the old green plan and I've heard rumours that this has been phased out with little consideration for vegetarians. Is this true and is the new plan anywhere near as good?

I'm thinking of just doing the green plan from home, but without access to the old online tools etc I won't have any way of finding out syn values on green.

Also I find the consultants local to me are pretty uninspiring. They tend to talk about meat dishes only, don't control the people in the group who just chat while they're talking and to be honest all the ones I've met so far are as large, if not larger than me, which to put it bluntly doesn't give me a lot of faith in their advice! I know sw can work because I've lost on it before, but I'd like to see a consultant who can practise what she preaches as I'd find it much more believable that I could ever stick to it permanently.

Ps, both consultants which I used to see I've tracked down on Fb this week, and they're now even bigger than they were 2 years ago! How can I take advice from these people? It's like the blind leading the blind!

I wonder if SW impose some conditions on their consultants. Definitely a bad show if they can't keep themselves in check.

I'm veggie, and used to go to class when Green was still an option. Consultant was good, slim(!), supportive, so I think you have been unlucky (or perhaps I was lucky). I do from home now, still follow Green (checking in here for latest Syn values) and have managed to keep most of it off. Trying to get back to pre-xmas weight, and doing from home progress is definitely slower than the "pressure" of the weekly weigh-in. But I figure this is for life, so I need the discipline to be able to manage this at home - don't want to be tied to weekly weigh-ins for the rest of my life! I have been charting my weight since the start (using Excel) so I know where I stand.

Not sure if any of this rambling helps. Good luck, and hope you find a consultant or regime that works for you.

The consultants may have a medical condition. As long as they help you get to where you want to be why worry about how they look.
I do understand that you need a role model and that should be the consultant but what if they were too thin would you say anything about that?

Most consultants are still on their own journey in my experience. As the lady above mentions you don't know what they might have had going on personally since you attended their class and nobody is perfect, for every person who looses weight and keeps it off there are several who slip up and re-gain. Let's face it here...nobody underweight is attending SW as they simply would not have you. Not sure if you meant it to as it comes across, but it does come across a tad judgmental. Some people have a stone to loose others have half their body weight, so in which case they may well be bigger than you. I've lost twice as much as my consultant but she still inspires me, and it's always going to be more about your own mindset...no one else.

As for the plan, the main SW plan is now Extra Easy which of course means (for the majority) you can enjoy both the old Red and Green days together. There are all types of members at the group I attend with all types of dietary needs, but quite simply if I share a recipe I have made with minced beef and bread then I'm quite sure they are capable of deciding they can swap it out with Quorn or bulk it our with more vegetables and substitute the bread for a Gluten Free product. There are lots of vegetarian recipes in the SW magazines and online too maybe you could use Google to get some more inspiration or look for members here on Minis that are Veggies that follow SW and see what they eat.

I have to admit, I had the same thought about my consultant, lovely woman, but she looked a bit on the large size and she'd been a consultant for 4yrs, not very inspiring, but members of her group were certainly loosing and really well. I've also learnt tonnes since doing it online that I didn't know (despite doing almost a year of group). I think we just have to face the fact that some consultants are better than others, I had a SW consultant from Wales who was amazing, she'd lost several stone and had portion plates, did syn quizzes and really got you involved, didn't help me loose weight quicker, but did seem a bit more fun.

Hi all consultants are different an as said before most are on there own journey of losing weight, the plan is harder for veggies even one of my consultants said this an often have lower weight losses but as said stick to green check in syn values here. I go to class an still do red days an extra easy ( my last consultant would not discuss red days with me) my consultant says if that's what I want to do an I know what I'm doing that's fine so you could join just to get some new info.

Another thought maybe you could become a inspiring consultant yourself an help the veggies?

Thanks for the replies all.

I've been having a look at the local consultants in my area, but not having much joy finding a new one. The same 2 seem to run all the local groups. Maybe I'll have to travel further afield.

Ideally I'd like to just do it from home. Believe it or not, it's my husband who makes this so difficult, I buy and prepare healthy food and he turns his nose up at it and orders a takeaway! Not exactly supportive and a bad influence. He does well at group but he's a meat eater. At home if we stop going he's useless, he seems to do great until the 6 week mark when the slimmer of the week awards stop being given to him every week! Myself I hate the pressure and restriction of being answerable every week, I want to be realistic. If it's someone's bday I don't want to sacrifice having a meal out with them where I can choose anything I like for the sake of my weekly Chinese and vodka night which I tend to save my points up for.

I don't mind if the weight comes off twice as slowly, as long as it's going in the right direction and I can continue to have a night or 2 a week where I can enjoy a drink and a treat. With group I feel like I'm paying so I must perform, but to me sometimes it feels to much too soon and too restrictive. Maybe I'm just making excuses for myself.

Anyway, back to the plan... Someone mentioned quorn can be used as a substitute for meat. Is this still the case with chunks/mince/Linda McCartney sausages/fake ham etc? Nothing's changed? Do the new books show the values for green still? Or does the website tool? Wondering about signing up online for green values...

Also, someone mentioned gluten free bread? Am I reading this right? Is gluten free bread free on green?!

Thanks all!

Many of the Quorn products are still free or very low syn..it's not something I look at much as I don't really bother with it. Bread is not free, but it is of course a Healthy Extra and there are gluten free options that you can have. I don't believe the books do include syns for the old plans, but if you are on Facebook check out a page called Syns Allowed. They do include syn values for all plans.
Maybe look at a SW online subscription as you can tailor the dietary requirements when you sign up, even if it's just for the minimum term a least you can download and get access to what you need to set yourself up :)

Hi, I used to stick to green and was very indignant about the changes. Now I have got used to it and it does seem that the losses are better. It was nicer having the two As and Bs and sometimes (the last time I successfully did SW) I'd have a green day again as a treat. The B choices are better too. I miss having olive oil as a B. Linda Mc sausages are still an option, as are the Fry's and the V bites. Some are synnier than others of course. I can't look them up from here but could do so soon if you want. The Tofurkey maple flavoured bacon stuff is only one syn for a whole packet!

Luckily I still have all the PDFs of the old green plan and as a vegan I use these. I've been a SW member online on and off surging the years and downloaded the 2012/2013 onwards files.

It's helpful as I do not like the EE and when I went to class my consultant whilst absolutely lovely was clueless about Vegan options. I wish they were a bit more knowledgable about 'alternative' ways of eating.

I find it not easy doing SW as a Vegan but you need to think outside the box and try and be creative with food and cooking. Some things as a vegan I have relied on - soya meat options are quite high so you become a bit more selective. Quorn now do Vegan onions whist is amazing. If the add vegan mince to the range I would be jumping for joy. Lol.

gemsta - how kind are you to take the time to research and post up all that info? A helpful soul is a helpful soul, regardless of weight or subject matter. Lovely gesture :) xx

Having been vegetarian (now lapsed temporarily for reasons I won't bore you with) I do think, particularly if vegan, you need to accept it will never be as discussed anywhere near as much as mainstream meat eating is. It has occurred to me, I have more meals leaning back to my veggie diet now on SW than prior to joining. Why not take some meal/food ideas to your meeting and ask members/consultant to reply following week with their thoughts? We all have to take some responsibility for making SW fit our own personal circumstances. Is there a dedicated Veggie/vegan tab on here? Why not ask if they can create one? A non chef person would not be entitled to moan about elaborate recipe conversations, nor a singleton entitled to object to family meal suggestions. Own it, be pro-active and don't be put off. Remember when the only veggie option eating out was roast dinner without the meat??? And vegan - glass of water for you, ma'am? xx Things have improved, and while I cant bear the Quorn etc stuff, there are still meals you can make with no meat. I just leave it out if I feel over run by 5% mice dishes :) Bit unfair to criticise weight of consultants. If I went to make up counter and it was a Kim Kardashian type, I d feel an old ugly frump and leg it. Someone who obviously understands the ongoing food challenges is more easy to open up to. I certainly don't want a tiny bird of a woman telling me to ramp up the salad :0 xxx

I personally wasn't criticising the consultants per se, I was saying they were not as knowledge of different ways of eating as I would expect to be honest. I do not expect them to necessarily understand the intricacies of eating as a Vegan, however it would be nice if they acknowledged other ways of eating rather than meat with everything, and be a little more knowledgeable of an increasingly popular way of eating.

You do make a valid point and suggest as Vegans or Vegetarians we need to be more pro-active, and I take that on-board, and perhaps by taking Vegan options to class for people to try it would perhaps show people there are other options.

I agree that we have to take responsibility for making SW fit our own personal circumstances, and that is 100% true. But, it would be nice if SW supported non meat eaters a little more, and perhaps being more pro-active and vocal in groups is the way to push this issue. :D

Totally hear you hon xx even just a hands up by them to say they didn't have much specialist knowledge but were happy to take your questions away n get back to you would help xx Life sand meat is not one long mung bean - many friends of mine have raved over vegetarian dinners here never realising there was no meat :) Am right behind you Freccle - we re converting the world one carrot at a time :) xx

Hi I'm veggie and doing it from home and finding it good to stick to now, I didn't the first 3 times I attempted SW over the last 7 years, but after doing a low carb diet for 2 months the switch to SW was so easy as it meant I could eat pasta and potatoes again. I have tried attending 3 groups but didn't feel part of it, similar story to you, and one of them embarrassed me, long story, but no, groups aren't for me at the moment, I wouldn't rule out attending one in the future if I found one I felt comfortable in. Good luck :)
