Greeneyes will PERSEVERE.........

Yes, I have bought some syn free food today, lots of fruit, some chicken, ham and eggs and some bacon, frozen berries to mix in with my 0% fat free greek yoghurt, so that is todays menu...... ha ha only joking...

I was hoping someone might be able to help me. I thought it was expensive when I was doing CD but I am sure that buying all this healthy food is far more expensive. There are 5 of us in the house, but the 2 small boys probably only eat as much as 1 adult (I always do slimming world recipes for 4 and there is plenty normally with some left over), and this week excluding animal food, I have spent £150. I really only have £70 a week budget for our food so have spent money we dont have. How much on average do you spend on your shopping in a week and what sort of meals do you cook? Help me to cut down on this bill please otherwise we will be back to sausage rolls and chips for dinner.... not good!! Plus I do not buy crisps or juice and not many chocolate biscuits either (my mum buys them crisps for the week and some choc bics and normal bics too, so only need to top up on the bics for them).
GE, I understand what you mean about the cost of food - I am on a very tight budget too and have spent more than I would if I was doing CD, however some meals are enough for two sittings, like yesterday having a lunch out of the previous night's dinner, whereas when I was eating 'normally' lunch would involve a drive to the shop, sandwich, crisps, chocolate bar - not exactly cheap. I am trying to do cheaper meals such as jacket potato with baked beans, very filling. Bacon, eggs and beans is fairly reasonable. If I had a garden I would be growing a lot of salad and vegetables, cheap and much tastier, maybe that is something you could do? Bet the kids would love to eat their own produce too.

I would welcome others' ideas on this too, after all....many hands make light work. Light being the operative word :D xx

I cannot actually grow stuff in my garden Chels, as the dogs would have great fun digging it up, I used to grow my own stuff years ago. also with the trampoline, shed and climbing frame and it is half paved we are short on space..... but dogs are the real reason. I have been known to grow tomatoes and spring onions in boxes outside the front of my house though.

Hi Linda and Yang,

I find that buying fresh and quality is more expensive than CD. And, as if you are following CD, you do not drink, eat out, buy cr*p at shops, sodas, etc. you are spending very little beyond your packet costs.

However, I try to save a bit by buying at weekly markets, and shopping at stores like Morrision's, Lidls, Aldi, etc. that have better prices.
I buy a lot when it is on offer (if it'll keep).
I do not shop hungry.
I plan my meals (bookmark recipes in cookbooks) before I make my shopping list -- after checking what I have on hand. And, I try very hard to stick to my list.

But, even with fresh quality foodstuffs costing more than pre-packaged rubbish - we almost never eat out or order take-a-ways.

DH has a protein bar or eggs for breakfast. DD has cereal, fruit and toast. DS has cereal or eggs and fruit. I make an evening meal, and DH takes leftovers to work for lunch. DS will have leftovers or make himself eggs or a sandwich with fruit for lunch, and I make DD's packed lunch. I have a porridge with slivered almonds for breakfast, a bar or MAM for lunch, and the SB meal for dinner with my family. There is very little "snacky" stuff consumed or purchased.

I have actually prepared to pack large Ziplock plastic bags for my trip. I have 15 CD shakes and a MAM container with four bars in one. And, 9 porridge packets with 9 snack-sized zips with the almonds in another. I am planning to prepare for packing 12 small zips with 1/3 cup portions of mixed nuts (my snacks). So, once in the U.S. I will be making or eating out one meal per day. And, I am pretty sure that even in the land of SuperSized, I can find something SB/CD 810/1000 friendly.

I'll prepare a few things for DD for the travel days, but I am making all the effort to prepare my food for my trip, so I have no excuse for not sticking to my programme.

I am lucky as my sister and the friends I am visiting are pretty much non-drinkers. I think one of friends will have an occasional glass of wine. But, sister never drinks and neither does the other friend. So, if I am with non-drinkers then I do not drink either. Calories saved!

I have no idea how much I spend on food each week as we normally do one or two main shops and also pick up food on the way home from work. I don't think we spend that much though.

I tend to get things like yogurt, cereal and cereal bars from ASDA as they normally have good offers. I also tend to get coffee from there for the same reason (unless I go to ALDI and get it from there).

We tend to eat things like:

Shepherds pie (using lean mince or turkey mince)
Beef Chilli
Bolognese
Pasta dishes - pasta bake, pasta sauces. I normally use chorizo to flavour the sauces / bakes
Rice dishes - Paella, risotto
Chicken kebabs (home made) with couscous
Curries - made with chicken thighs & rice

All of the above meals are SW friendly and cheap to make. I always use chicken thighs or drumsticks (skinned) as it's a lot cheaper than breasts.

Oh and I keep peas, green beans and sweetcorn in the freezer to add to curries and chilli to bulk out the veg content. :)

Right - I need to stop procrastinating now and get on with work!

I buy lots of meat/fish on special offer or from the 'whoops' section and freeze it on the day, also freeze extra portions of any meals, bolognaise, chilli, curries in foil trays with lids (£1 from cheapy shop) mostly use frozen veg and don't buy much snacky rubbish, always buy tesco value/market value basics ranges of fruit n veg, pasta, rice, and then compare weights/prices on any offers as the tesco offers of 3 for 2 or 3 for £10 on meat are not always the cheaper options. I only buy UHT skimmed milk and in bulk, and i have to agree with Chels that CD can be cheap when you're not eating i remember saving tons of cash when i did SS, no eating out, meeting friends for lunch, no drinking, no take aways, nothing else but my packs, and the food for the family lasted forever as much less eaten once i stopped eating so very much...ha ha!

You've really got me thinking Linda...There are 5 of us here all the time, often 7 and extra friends quite often as well. My shopping bill was about £120 today, loads of SW stuff in there. I don't buy ready meals, biscuits, cake etc and have always cooked our meals. I buy tinned pulses, baked beans, sweet corn and tomatoes. Frozen peas, broad beans, spinach....We have our own eggs , but that's not cheap as the corn is expensive; fruit from the orchard and grow veg, especially in the late spring/summer. Meat sometimes, I think all the lamb and mutton has gone now though. I've still got a couple of sacks of spuds which I hope won't start to chit, but it's a bit late and they might. We never waste any food, anything that isn't fit for us to eat goes in the chicken bowl - stale bread, tea bags, scraps from plates, veg and fruit peelings....I probably won't have to do a big shop for a week, but you can bet we'll need things like loo roll, tea and main meal type protein later on. I still need to get a chicken from the butcher tomorrow and there may be odds and ends I've forgotten - I was away from home and didn't have a list.
I used to shop online and if I bothered to get myself organised really should do again, I'm sure that I would spend less. I think the weekly bills are high, but ours always have been, sometimes I think I should just chuck £20 notes into the septic tank and cut out the 'middle man', after all that's where it all ends up!

I often work on that government survey which you see on the telly about the cost of living - the one where they show you the basket of goods. The results of our work in February have just been released....From the information I collect, people with families the size of ours often spend more than I do and a lot of processed food is bought and very little fresh.
It's difficult working and cooking economically, sometimes I get organised with the slow cooker, or put something in the Rayburn in the winter, but often not. Actually, planning better would be a very good idea.
We eat lots of soup though - at the moment nettle, pea and mint and I've used Alli's recipe for butternut squash soup recently.
Rarely have puddings, again often fruit, fresh or from the freezer or garden - wonderful forced rhubarb there at the moment - cooked with ginger and Splenda, yum!

Poor OH has just come in to say he's a mini's widow! I'll go and see him now! xx

Not sure what our weekly shop is, but it did shrink when DS left for uni... and we spend less when I CD but then again... the cash goes out to CDC & the last 5 or 6 weeks I was doing it, I was also spending on sugar binges... I am happy that SW is a healthier way for me at the moment. We buy a lot of quorn and have less full-fat cheese & bread than when I am off-wagon, and lately more rice as a meal-base which is great. Home made soups & stews & salady lunches are pretty good value I think.

Hmmmmm, stuck to SW 100% yesterday, first day I was 100% and scales rose by nearly 1.5lb, so including my rise the day before that is 2lb...... am so nearly in the 12s again and that is just not on so because I am spending so much on food and my weight is rising I am going to start CD 810 again on Monday. Have texted my lady asking for some more packs and will do that for 2 weeks at a time I think. I was much more successful whilst on CD even though the weight didn't come off very fast.... just need to get into the 10s again, then will try the healthy eating again, but maybe WW instead of SW.... I think I just eat way to much on SW....

Thank you for all your replies about budgets, I will take it on board and start planning in advance for when I stop CD, maybe in 4 weeks or something, then at least I will be ready for it this time and will be able to budget better.

I have wondered the same, GE, but am sticking with SW for now as I know I haven't given it a fair chance, too much messing around.

I think it's important though to trust the path you are on, and if SW isn't right then you know 810 WILL get results. Not letting you jump overboard though, you will have to hop across to the CD liferaft and paddle alongside the SW boat, so we can all yell at each other!

Good luck for Monday!

GE I also put on weight when doing SW, that fact that I'm a vegetarain probably doesn't help as I don't like quorn ect. Once I've worked up the plans I plan to low GI but on my own plan, rather than any clubs WW/SW,

Hi Linda,

Welcome Aboard "The Whatever Will Work For Me". I am doing a CD810/1000 and South Beach combo and have been since mid-February. I am losing a steady 1 to 2 pounds a week (exactly what Beck recommends). Because it is not too complicated (I am blonde) and it works for my family cooking, I have been able to stick to it really well.

We can paddle alongside our SW friends and keep shouting words of encouragement to each other!

Notice we are making rather slow progress -- but we will get there! ;)

WILL Bess~ WILL STAY OFF (I think I can, I think I can... Chug, Chug...)

Slow would have been good for me on SW too, but I was quickly putting weight on, so back to what I know works, I only really stopped coz DH lost his job and now he has a new one should be okay. Also worked out way more expensive for me to do SW too than CD..... heres to a good day 1 I hope, school holidays are not so good for me but I am going to do the best I can. Hope you all have a good day and thank you for your continued support..... xx

Glad to see that you are able to come back on CD and redo what works for you.
I look at those photos in your signature and see that CD was fab for you. You look fantastic in the right hand photo after the loss that CD achieved for you.
I remember reading your posts two years ago and how dedicated you were to losing weight. I am sure that you can do it again.
If I can, then anyone can.
I know you have had some difficult moments recently, but losing weight and feeling positive about ourselves again, sure helps us get thru the ups and downs of everyday life.
Good luck on your 100% CD and keep it up

Hi Linda,

I think being on CD might make it easier over the half-term, as there are no decisions to make. You can't have anything! That was my favourite thing about SSing... no decisions to make, no portions to control, etc. You can do this -- you have before and know how to make this work!

I am sure you will do well, and I am glad to have someone back on CD. I think Lelly and I were getting a little lonely, but then Shanny returned from her hols, and now you've switched back for the time being. I have nothing against Slimming World, I just know that I would find it hard to lose weight on a diet like that because of my low BMR (I am only 5'4", small to medium frame, over 40, and not very active). When I have food I have to count calories and watch the carbs. It is balacing act: take in a lot less than you burn. (And , it is hard to do this when you burn so few.)

I hope you have a wonderful term break!

MinnieMel

P.S. How is Mr Depp liking his new gig?

Wishing you a speedy settling-in again to CD... onwards, ever onwards! Have a fab day, it's chucking down here, I am NOT impressed!

Good morning Greeneyes, wishing you well with your 1st day on CD. I am sure you will be fine. You know it works well for you. I'm looking forward to seeing your tracker moving along to the right, plotting your shrinkage :D

Have a wonderful day xx
