Help - Ketosis Question (cross posted)

I am so annoyed/upset/confused

I'm really sorry if this is in the wrong place.. please tell me and I'll delete etc.

Today I decided to have ‘a meal’ for lunch today instead of dinner (since I have Brownies and won’t be home ‘till late) went to the kitchen to prepare Jacket potatoe, salad and beans (always have foods ready – just in case)

While in the kitchen someone else from the office (not my department) was preparing a lighter life soup… then started giving me the whole ‘I thought you were doing slim fast’ talk. Explained that you can have one meal a day etc.. not that I should be defending myself (I thought I got sf :S)

It turns out I am ‘not in ketosis’ and I won’t be on slim fast unless I cut carbs completely.

Man. I’m SO confused right now. No wonder I have only been loosing a pound a week. URGH!

Can anyone explain ketosis to me? If it helps.. this is what I’m eating on slim fast:

Breakfast: Shake (230)
Snack: 100 cals or less
Lunch: Shake (230)
Snack: 100 cals or less
Dinner: 500 – 600 calorie meal
Snack: 100.

I don’t know what to do L The reason I switched to slim fast, was because after losing 2 stone on slimming world (really slowly) I felt like I needed a change.
I just feel so confused right now. I can’t afford to do a diet like lighter life.

Eeeeeeek. Help help. Please help.

Ketosis is sold by these diet salespeople as though it is a good thing. It is not good, your body is forced to leech calccium from your bones and it is also a strain on your kidneys. You are already creating a deficit and a pound a week loss is very respectable and better than putting one on. My advice to you is if you would like to lose weight a bit quicker then do more exercise. I wouldn't try to lose it all overnight, it never works in the long run and you would do well to learn how to eat healthily in the long term because you can't live on shakes, bars and cupasoups forever. Thank you hun.

I just feel so discouraged. My losses have been quite slow on slimming world, and as I have a lot to lose I just wish it was a bit fasted.
I moved on to slim fast in a bid to sort of combat this (if that makes sense)
I hoped it would take me away from the 'freedom' of eating lots of food, like you have on slimming world.
But now I just feel like I'm doing it wrong.. I don't know how to go about it.
How does your body go in to ketosis? Just eating low calorie? Is this right?

You're not meant to be in ketosis in SF it's not a VLCD. To get into ketosis you need to be on something like Exante or Cambridge.

Ketosis isn't about low calorie it's about carbs etc SF losses aren't actually much more than SW. Being in ketosis won't affect your weight loss. People on VLCDs can lose weight without ketosis because of the calorie deficit they're having.

Even if you were in ketosis your weight loss would be the same. If you want something faster you'd need to look at one of the VLCDs. You can do exante and cd a similar way to sf in that you have 3 shakes and a low cal very low carb meal. Doing that you can lose around 10 lbs a month

What nonsense Ketosis isn't 'sold' by anyone. If you're following a proper VLCD your body will go into ketosis something which it's perfectly safe to do

These diets work extremely well and noone expects to live on shakes forever. They're a fast method of weight loss which are completely safe

Thanks hun, so in order to do a low calorie diet it should be in the form of total meal replacement? I.e. you couldn't just cut cals yourself/in addition to slim fast etc?

Thank you hun! I'm going to have a look on Cambridge/Exante forum now for some more information about them.
I feel so discourage with my weight loss, (or lack of, rather) at the moment.

I'd also like to add that meal replacement diets are not the only way to get into ketosis, and that Atkins and Dukan use it too (albeit just a light one for Dukan). It is perfectly safe provided you drink plenty of water.
