Ladies problems - what do you think?

I have been going back and forth to my GP for about 12 months with a continuing problem with my monthlies.

I started having a period 10 days after finishing my last which was driving me mad. When I wasn't on a period I had tummy ache and it just didn't feel right. My GP did some blood tests and sent me for an ultrasound but everything came back normal. She said she had no idea why this had started happening, but if I wanted she would prescribe me the contraceptive pill to regulate my period. (I'm 39 by the way).

That was a bout 6 months ago and things have improved a little. But now a pattern is emerging again. I have my period, then 10 days later I start with pre-menstrual symptoms; tummy ache, headaches etc and these continue for about a week, then I have my period. So basically every cycle I have a week with no period and no symptoms and I'm really fed up about it.

Do you think I need to go back to my GP?

Has your doctor tested to see if you are postmenopausal.

I really have no idea but would advise you to go back to your GP and to keep going until you find out what is happening. We all know that your menstrual cycle should be every 28 days.

Anything out of the normal should be checked.

You can ask for a second opinion at your surgery, or visit the GUM clinic for some more advice. If you're not good at being pushy with the doctor to get what you want (& need), then you can always take someone with you for a bit of moral support.

Hope you get it sorted hun xxx

You could be peri-menopausal (this comes before pre and before the actual thing!). A bit early really but you can be peri-menopausal for a good few years.
I'm surprised they put you on the pill at 39 to be honest, my doc won't let me have the pill and I'm 39.
I would suggest a mirena coil, this is used not only for contraception but also to regulate hormones and can be used right up to and through the menopause.
I have had one for years and don't have periods, very very occasional spotting but that's it.
I would say your GP needs to do further blood tests and say you need your hormone levels checking hun.
Good luck. x

I think I'd check with another GP in the practice, is there one who specialises in women's health? As it's 6 months a blood test might show a change in hormone levels. If you google Menopause Matters you will find a good forum re all things menopausal, and quite a few of the girls started with symptoms around your age.

Please let us know how you are and how you get on,

hugs xxxx

without sounding like a complete idiot, how are you counting the days? from when to when?
if you are pre-menstrual for a week before, and "on" for about a week, then that's 14 days or so and with 10 days in between that's 24 ish so not that far off the 28 or so that others mention above as the average..

Can you tell I've never really had a girlfriend and the only woman I've ever lived with is my mom? :)

24 days would be really considered as a short cycle. Its not unheard of, but its certainly not much fun for the person having it. Second voice here for the Mirena. Splendid thing it is.

Exactly what I was thinking. Fantastic invention. I've just had mine replace and I'm planning on two more and hopefully that will get me through the menopause!!

Obviously, that is after all the checks have been done xx

Keep us updated x

Just thought I'd quickly mention that if you do take the contraceptive pill, this will alter your hormone levels so any kind of menopause might not be apparent.

This sounds obvious, I know, but my Drs didn't think of this when they ordered a second round of blood tests to check hormones before I was diagnosed with PCOS - obviously everything came back as normal so they told me not to worry about it.. But I'd been on the pill for a few months so of course it was normal! As soon as I came off it, my hormones went out of whack again.

I hope you get a second opinion, giving you the pill isn't treating the symptoms, just masking them. I wouldn't go back on the pill until they found out why I wasn't having any periods in case it was something more serious.

Hey hopefully they've already tested for this but my periods used to last for 3 weeks straight with a 1 week break in between untill they diagnosed me as hypo-thyroid. I now take Femidome contraceptive pill and it's the only pill that's worked on me as all the others didn't stop the bleeding. Hope they find out what it is and fix the problem soonish.
