hello hun! im new to slim and save also, my pack should be arriving tomorrow :D

I am in the same boat its my birthday at the end of the month and i have 2 meals to go to, i was going to wait but im itching to get started now, i know i will be able to get straight back on it after my meals so im starting wednesday :D

It depends what you're intending to eat at the meals. If you are willing to have a shake and watch every one else eat (which is what I did on my birthday - but to be fair that was 6 months in!) or to have just 100g of chicken or white fish and only vegetables from the SnS list then you can have your meal without breaking the diet. However, if you want to be able to have whatever you like - including things heavy in carbs - such as potatoes / bread / pudding then I wouldn't start now but wait until after the weekend. Also, if you are wanting alcohol then wait until after the weekend. The reason I say this is that VLCDs work by putting you in to ketosis. Ketosis is great as your hunger is supressed and you burn fat at a high rate. However, it takes a good 4 or 5 days to get in to ketosis and that time is hard. You can feel very hungry and may get carb withdrawal headaches. If you start now you will just about be in ketosis on your birthday - then if you eat carbs you'll come out of ketosis and have to do it all again. You don't burn a huge amount of fat getting into ketosis but far more when you are there so it doesn't seem worth it.

Also, drinking alcohol when you haven't eaten many carbs is quite dangerous and you are likely to feel very ill afterwards and it will have a bigger affect. Also, some alcohol can knock you out of ketosis.

So it's your choice - start now and eat something which keeps you on the diet and no alcohol on your birthday - or start after your birthday and have what you like on your birthday - or start now and have what you like on your birthday and feel bad!
 
Good advice from Weasey. I think I'd just add that I have once had a carby meal plus alcohol when it was my office Xmas meal. I didn't want to take a proper break so carbed up in the morning to come out of ketosis, had the meal and alcohol and went straight back on it the next day. Getting back into ketosis was a breeze. That was 4 months in tho. I wouldn't do it so close to starting, I would just wait until after the meal to start and I also would not do it too often. It's the only time I've done that in 6 months (apart from my 2 planned breaks).
