PCOS and Weight Loss ?

A low gi diet is meant to be best for pcos. I managed to lose 65lbs slowly on slimming world but now losses have stopped. I've ordered a book from amazon that's about pcos & how a low gi diet is best & can help with symptoms of pcos & help u lose weight. Once I've read it I'll let u know what it says x

What is strange is I found it really hard to lose weight when I was following a GI diet but in general it is for most sufferers the best weight loss. Having PCOS is a nightmare is so many ways just weight. I think its just horrible thing for us ladies :(

For many of us, restricted carb intake seems to be the way to go, it definitely is for me. Most of us are insulin resistant to some degree or another, so don't handle carbs very well. I am severely insulin resistant and am having real problems with this, if I eat carbs then I gain weight immediately, I did not get on well on a low GI diet.

My brothers a personal trainer and has been training my mate whos got PCOS and around 111 kg's
Her weight is dropping off with good eating (as you are) and gym sessions incorporating cardio and heavy weight training.. dont just train for tonight, really push those weights.
Drop sets are good.. do 8-12 reps, drop the weight down, do another 8-12 (doing 4 sets altogether)

Food wise, i find peppers, cucumber, tomatoes, sliced ham in a wholemeal wrap (half the calories of white wraps) are fanastic

Breakfast wise, look into oatmeal/porridge..quaker oats do multipacks and even one of them with milk fills me up for 2-3 hours..great stuff

According to my endocrinologist the best way to lose weight with PCOS is low GI and to only eat a little bit at a time but often. Apparently our bodies are set up to store every calorie we take in (great if we ever get stranded on the African plains, we're the survivors, not so great in the western world :) so you have to trick it and only take in what your body needs in the immediate future for it's essential functions and then it will start to use some of the reserves so you lose weight, also any binge will go straight into stores as fat. It sort of works for me, I lose 0.25lbs a week like that which in comparison to gaining 1lb a week when on 1200 calories a day and gaining 2lb a week on WW and slimming world so I guess it's a success and I'm a regular at the gym for the past 7 years. Unfortunately the only thing that really works for me is TFR which is low GI and also only 450calories a day, not much fun but am just grateful it works.

Also be super careful about doing weights, the hormones we have with PCOS are similar to those in someone taking steroids, you will build muscle faster and bigger than a normal woman and if they get too big you will make the PCOS even worse as it increases the androgen production, if you want to tone muscles, very low weights high repetition is the best for us and put it with lots of cardio. Remember that muscle weighs more than fat too so if you are loosing inches but not weight don't be disheartened, the BMI and weight charts don't always apply to us, getting a set of scales that measure fat and water percentages are much more helpful, get your fat percentage into a healthy range and you are winning. Remember everyone is different too, we all have different hormone levels and different symptoms, my friend has hormone levels that barely mean she has PCOS and she will quite merrily admit she got fat eating too many cakes, I have the worst hormone profile my consultant has ever seen which makes weight loss painfully slow.

Good luck :)

Hi I have pcos too and slogged away at weight watchers for 5 months to only lose 10 pounds most of which I put down to exercise. Which has always been the best way to lose weight for me unless I cut out carbs completely. Does anyone else find it impossible to shift it from you tummy?? I'm now having a go at lipotrim as I have lost more in two weeks than I did in 5 months and its keeping me motivated.

I have pcos and have had for all of my adult life, (im 41), weightwatchers works if done correctly. Pcos is not the cause of my weight gain nor does it prevent me from losing weight. Its just my excessive overeating and lack of exercise that does that...right now im stuck in a rut caused by being an obese mess...good luck all..:)

Glad it helped, my doc is amazing, he specialises in PCOS and does lots of research papers on it though I have spent years trying to find a decent consultant!

Wow, if you can lose through a normal diet like weight watchers why aren't you doing it? I had to spend 2 weeks in a residential unit where they check all your luggage for food and make you do supervised exercise and toilet breaks to make sure you aren't cheating before the hospital would help me to lose weight, I'd give anything for a diet with varied foods like weight watchers to work for me.

Wobble boards (think they're called vibration plates these days?) are supposed to be good for the tummy if you lose most of the weight and just have the flabby bits! Never tried it myself so can't guarantee it! Good luck with lipotrim, I did it years ago and it was amazing, started it again 2 weeks ago, little setback this week but hopefully back on it next week :) If you stick to it the skinny again feeling is fabulous! Good luck :)

Because i suffer from depression and an eating disorder, i have a bf who only puts me down (yea he works and at mo is paying bills as im unemployed two months now), i have health issues, too numerous to mention, am recovering from another fracture and torm ligaments. Achilles and im grieving my dad and uncles deaths...i know ww works, i just dont "work"...I need a fairy godmother and a hug...dream on linda...thats why im not able to do ww right now *

Thank you Linzielegs! Its just amazing how much difference LT has made compared to WW I've now lost about 16 pounds and can really see a difference all over. I will definitely look into the wobble board sounds fab. I have just got off 8 weeks on crutches and am raring to go (not too fast but a bit more exercise than before!) Im also going to go to the docs next week and face up to the PCOS as have been ignoring it (along with my weight) and went off dianette a while ago. Thanks for the advice and good luck with your weight loss! You've done great even with a wee blip! x

@L.i.n.d.a when you hit rock bottom the only way is up. Both me and my sister have taken control when we have had difficult situations, she has a bad break up and I've been dealing with a disability and its honestly been the best thing we ever did. You have to just take control and for us as we got on top of our weight other things fell into place and were both much happier because of it. Good luck with everything I hope it all works out. :) x
