Quitting smoking and pregnancy

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone is quitting while pregnant, has quit while pregnant or is still smoking?

Just after seeing stacey Solomon on this morning yesterday it was a little heartbreaking how guilty and ashamed she felt.

I'm 15 weeks and still struggling to quit properly I've gone from 10 a day before pregnancy to 3 a day and I'm really struggling to make that final step and I have to say I feel just like stacey. I feel like I'm letting my baby down because I can't control my willpower but its just so so hard.

I know all the statistics and it scares me silly but I've been smoking 10 years and its hard to break such a long term habit but I'm so cross with myself.

If anyone has any tips for me or if there is anyone who is struggling like me I would be so grateful for any help.

I just don't want to smoke anymore :(

I'm going to try and quit tomorrow, I feel more positive now I've admitted I'm struggling I've had none to talk to about it so if I can use this to talk through how I'm feeling like we all do with weight it might help me.

I quit the day I found out from 20 a day, not touched one since, It is hard and there have been times I've actually sat and cried because I wanted one but my only advice is its simple, just don't do it however much you want to. It's just not worth the risk for me, I know it's hard and people struggle but I just find it excuses because I know how it's been for me and I've still not done it because I wouldn't risk my baby.
You can try those electric cigarettes, or can you have patches in pregnancy? If your struggling I'd go and see the doc and see what they have to say, the sooner you stop the better it will be for your baby
When I've tried quitting when not pregnant I started to peck my cigs out after a shorter time start with doing it on on one like just smoke half then gradually just a few drags then cut that one out altogether and do that over a week or so til your only having a few drags a time x

As soon as I found out I was pregnant I switched from full strength superkings to king-size lights which are half the size.

I don't smoke a cigarette of my own either anymore, my oh smokes so when he has one I have a few shallow drags and that's what I'm finding hard to stop. He is trying to stop aswell and I know that if he did I would but I'm just going to try and not touch ANY tomorrow.

Thanks for your advice.

Can you make your OH smoke outside that way you won't be seeing him do it? Im lucky my DH has be dr smoked so I didn't have the temptation once I'd thrown mine away, I had to go cold turkey cus I wouldn't have done it any other way, if I cut down I would've just given up sort of thing so it was easier for me to just go through it, I was at my friends the other day n she's pregnant and still smokin but cut down, when she had a fag I did want one but I've not had one since September so it would be stupid to smoke one now! I probably will end up starting again once I'm not pregnant though cus I still want one all the time x

It's stupid I've wanted to quit for 2 years now, my nanna died of lung cancer and my dad died of cancer and now I'm pregnant what more do I need to happen to make myself quit!

We've always smoked outside I actually hate the smell of smoke Tbh I don't even enjoy smoking so we've always gone out on the patio.

If I can get through one day without one I will know I can do it. I don't remember what its like to not smoke anymore if you know what I mean!

I'm the same been smoking 10 years apart from when I've been pregnant so it's something I'm so used to doing, I've always gone out or if it's throwing it down stand at the back door, with DH having bad asthma and LO in house I never smoked inside. My grandma has got chronic lung disease and she sits with oxygen mask on and then takes it off to have a fag, I don't wanna end up like that, I hopefully will only go back to smoking socially not all the time x

I know what you mean my nanna had an oxygen mask at the end. My dad quit smoking the day my big sister was born he had bowel cancer and ended up with pneumonia which killed him he couldn't breath :(

I've never wanted to quit so much in my life I AM going to do it

Day 1 - been up since 6am and so far I'm managing ok without a cigarette. I'm writing as I'm having a little craving now but its already almost been 12 hours without a smoke!

I already feel better, my breathing feels easier and I don't feel as wound up as I did when I was smoking funnily enough.

I've decided Everytime I feel like I want one I'm going to write on here and read a few chapters of a book to take my mind off it!

Well done, first 3 or 4 days were the hardest I found, then it's just trying to stop the habit, being on the phone was a big one for me whenever someone rang me I'd go stand outside n smoke that was hard to get out of x

It's just the first thing in the morning after meals and at night was when I was sharing with my hubby so they will be the ones I miss!

I can do this!

Well done your doing great, if you can get to the week mark chances are your going to stick to it xx

I need to, I'm starting to show and there is nothing worse than seeing a pregnant woman smoking I've wanted to stop for such a long time I've hated being a smoker for years.

Well done :) does your GP/hospital run a stop smoking services? there may even be a specialist midwife, someone with extended training can prescribe patches etc during pregnancy and also the additional support i.e. counselling will increase the chance of someone quitting :)

Can u get your partner to join you in quitting? as if any parent smoking (even if they don't smoke in the house) increases the risk of cot death once babe is here.

Yeah he's trying he has patches and stuff from boots, I've told him once he finishes the ones hes got that's it no more!

Im glad we never smoked in the house though, my nanna used to when she was alive!
