Sagging Skin - Prevention Article

Hi All,

So I read an article about improving the skins elasticity and sagging skin after rapid weight loss the other day and it had some different ideas about what causes it and possible prevention that I wanted to get your input on. If its okay I can post the link, but I wanted to be sensitive to posting an article that may or may not be Cambridge supported.

Essentially it takes a bit of a different look at what actually causes excess skin. I had always thought that when you lose a lot of weight you have extra skin because the elasticity isnt as good as it could be - which is why some individuals take the extra step to have it surgically removed. However this article actually states that people should combat excess skin by losing more weight!

The theory is that on a rapid weight loss diet, best case scenario an individual will loose 20-30% muscle mass in addition to fat loss. With water fasts its as much as 70% lean muscle loss. So really when we hit our goal weight, we still have any additional 20-30% fat but are lacking the muscle mass.

Apparently this is one of the reasons why people usually put weight on right away, its more that the muscles are repairing and rebuilding - not that you're putting on additional fat.

The article suggests a few prevention items for those in a rapid weight loss diet - 1 being toning and weight training (makes sense) and the other being having a 'refresh/break' day once a week. He suggested that taking one day a week to increase the caloric intake (within reason) will help muscles with maintenance.

Reading through the article, it makes sense. But I wanted to see what people thought about this application to CD. I know that we have quite a bit of protein intake which I assume is to help decrease lean muscle loss but do any of you feel it would be adventitious for someone on SS or SS+ to have 1 810 day per week?

Let me know if you feel it would be okay for me to post the link and I will for those who would like to actually read it. :)

Seems a good argument for weight training throughout to me.

Well i dunno bout cambridge but my hubby body builds as has one day off per week (a saturday) eating what he likes within reason and its kinda the norm in that world..so i get why they are saying it .. just dunno how it sits for cd'ers xx

My BF does a bit of building as well and I think the point of that is to really increase carbs to help muscles repair. Being in keto I'm not sure if increasing calories and protein would really help. Any consultants have input here?

Interesting article! What kind of toning/weights do you ladies do? and how often per week?

Throughout my weight loss I had a day or two eating a small meal in the evening, just an 810 meal really, and ive noticed my skin is fine.. I have just turned 40, and was worried about it initially, but its been fine.
It does make sense thinking about it, and it never made any difference to my weekly losses. im not suggesting everyone should do it, its just what i did...

For toning I really prefer resistance bands since it makes my hands hurt less than weights. I also have a series of pilates videos that utilize resistance bands for certain areas of the body. Its difficult but worth it. Anything I'm not flexible enough to do, I just do crunches while they're folded up into a pretzel.

Small dumbells for upper arms.

Thighs... thigh lifts...no tools required lol just lie on ya side and lift ya leg and go up and down for a few beats per side...give it 3 x 10 reps each leg..do that every day you'll be grand :D

I think unless you're 50stone and get a gastric band (which can really strip the body of needed nutrients and minerals) then skin will considerably reduce and tighten over time.

People that say rapid weight loss causes loose skin forever is stupid. Us women have been giving birth since the start of time. It considerably increases the size of our mid section and stretches the skin. This is no different than someone being overweight with the belly.

When you give birth, your belly basically deflates. I know mine did and I was left with a stretched balloon. Most of this has gone back pretty much normal (bar bad stretch mars, I'M HUMAN! :giggle:) anyway, so theoretically. Giving birth to a baby should be worse on your abdomen than losing 10lbs a week on CD. But the abdomen does recover.

Also, after having a baby or losing rapid weight loss, specialists say you should give your body 2-3 years to recover completely in regards to skin, nutrients and minerals. Thus, after 2-3 years. IF you have done no work out/toning whatsoever, what you have, is probably what you're going to get. But if you've been looking after yourself, toning and exercising, you'll probably be pretty happy with what you're left with.

Our bodies are amazing things. The reason most opt for surgery is the fact they were extremely over weight 450-550lbs? Or they just want that quick result. Even surgery isn't perfect. It can go wrong and you can end up with worse than you started with. You just have to look at failed tummy tucks to see that.

So I do agree with a certain amount of that website if I'm honest. I don't think we should put all our eggs in one basket. But I think if you want something enough, you'll get it.

Main key is to be happy in your body, which ever route you take.

I go to the gym every other day and do cycling then weights...just a full body workout really. Except I can't do the rowing I normally do because the CD makes me dizzy!

So far I haven't got that much baggy skin, the odd bit but nothing I'm crying about.

The reason skin pings back easilly is because of genetics and mainly age

If your knocking kids out late teens early twenties your skin has so much elastic its prime for pinging back.. i had my first child at 23 and my stomach has not one stretch mark or did it sag...

Older and you have far bigger risk of skin sagging/puckering/looking creapy.... fact...unfortunately.

Hey Numnums,

I do agree that 'deflated skin' does sound a bit silly but the article is not talking about stretched out skin, its talking mainly about excess fat and lost lean muscle mass. So essentially providing an alternative explanation of what some perceive as excess skin after rapid weight loss.

The goal is to try to reduce as much lean muscle mass as possible.

I don't know where I got my skin from but I didn't take after my mother. My kids did a right number on my stomach. First at 18 and second at 21. But I completely admit I did very little to help it due to PND and not caring.

I was told by a doctor and consultant that with any form of weight loss whether its CD or operations, watever your skin looks like 3/4 months after u have reached your target weight is the skin you will be left with for the rest of your life. It also depends how big the person is and for how long, pregnancy is only 9months, if someone has been very overweight for many years, this will have more of an effect on the skin loosing elasticity and it also depends if the person has lost and gained alot of weight more than once, as this puts pressure on the skin also. And not everyone who has a band or bypass is 50stone :p and people getting it done on the nhs are certainly not looking for a quick fix as you still have to lose weight before being allowed one and wait around 2 years for it hehe :)

My belly deflated to a point, but i have never gone back to the way i was before.
I lost a lot of weight VERY fast and my stomach still just hangs down! Those who remember me from pre-christmas remember my desperation to try and get something done about it becuase it was so bad!
Yes, it was my own fault blar blar blar, but irrelevent of how much work i do on my body, the excess skin, FOR ME does not go away!
I ran a 5k race at size 10 and i still had loads of excess skin flapping about on my upper thighs. I go running, do horse riding and have OCD so clean like a demon lol, so its not for the lack fo exercise that i have the skin problem!

Maybe its genetic, maybe its just my skin, maybe its my own fault for butchering my body so much over all these years, however, i know that my stomach will NEVER go back to the way it was when i was 20!

I think things can be done to a point for most, but not for all!

As for the idea of SS'ing and then having an 810 day, i dont think playing with ketosis on a regular basis would do yourself any favours....but i dont know the medical side effects to that

xx

A few months ago I did try doing CD SS+ one day then eating 1200 cals the next day (to try to keep my metabolism up). It was torture! I was just permanently hungry so I try to avoid any breaks in ketosis if I can.

your still v young though becca :) this is what we're talking about and plus your stomach wasnt stretched for 10 plus years lol

pregnancy is a piece of pi$$ skin wise...compared to fattness....i should know lol
