Smash Pizza Or Pizza Base Mix?

Hi Guys,
I am thinking about making a pizza tonight(sw friendly), what does the pizza made with smash taste like? Would it be better to buy a pre made pizza mix that you just add water to?

Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Claire

the pizza base mix (i used to use loads) works out (wll morrisons one does) 30 syns for 1 sachet ouch!!!!

Hiya - make the base with smash as it's really nice.
The trick is to add as little water as possible (but enough to make it into mash).... then pat really flat on a baking tray, spray with frylight and bake for about 15 mins on each side before putting topping on.

I normally make my topping in a pan separate, then put it on the base to cook for last 5 mins or so.

GOod luck x

No it's ok to be honest - ok it's not dominos, but it's free so give it a go.

Just make sure you pat it nice and flat, that way it goes all crispy. Yum, I want one now! x

I use Cream of the Crop mashed potato with spring onion (frozen) and its free, don't like using too many syns so this ones great. xxx

I've made it with normal mashed potato (not instant) and it's okay. It wasn't pizza as we know and love it but it wasn't bad, the toppings were good. I need to try it with smash, I don't like it as mashed potato itself but perhaps thickly as a base it may be good!!!

I wouldn't waste 30 syns on a pizza base for sure!!!

You have all just helped me decide that I am having this tonight! haha.

I absolutely love pizza so any prospect of having it as a FREE food I will jump at!

Any ideas as to what toppings etc to use?

I have made this and used olives and bacon with garlic as a topping (and healthy extra A of cheese) and it was amazing

Oooooh i cannot wait to have this mmmmm! Cant have it tonight or tomorrow as MIL is staying over and not her thing at all ...

Think i might make a syn free BBQ Sauce and top it with Chicken, Bacon, Sweetcorn, Peppers and Red Onion

or a tomato sauce and top it with

Chorizo (synned),oregano, feta, fresh tomatoes, mushrooms and olives

oh yum.......

From the SW website just in case people do not know :)

2. Are couscous cake, Smash pizzas and lasagne-sheet ‘Doritos’ Free?

You might be disappointed to hear that they’re not. Because changing the use of a food can make it easier to over-eat, to protect your weight loss they become Synned.

When foods like pasta, rice and grains are used in their original form they’re low in energy density (calories), bulky, appetite-satisfying foods. Pasta, couscous and rice are usually the main ingredient in a meal packed with other Free Foods – giving it sufficient bulk to be satisfying as a meal in itself. However, when ground down, used as flour (like in couscous cake), used as a sauce thickener (like Smash), seasoned crisps (like Doritos) or puréed (like smoothies) they’re often used as additions to a main meal… and on top of your day’s Syns. It is a very effective way of adding a lot of extra calories in a non-bulky way, and as such would then be counted as Syns

Pete’s Pizza (Revisited)
Serves 2
Ingredients
125g Instant mash (ff)
1 Red onion, sliced thinly (s) (sff)
1tbsp dried chives
1tbsp basil
Shake of garlic salt
Shake of black pepper

Toppings
45g Mozzarella cheese (1Hea) or 7syns for 50g
45g Reduced fat Cheddar (1Hea) or 7syns for 50g
6 slices Chorizo sausage (0.5syn each slice)
6 tbsp. passata (s) (sff)
1tbsp Worcester sauce
1 tbsp. Balsamic vinegar
1 tbsp. tomato puree
Pineapple slices (s) (sff) (0.5syn)

Method
Cook the onion until soft & set aside.
Make up the instant mash as per the packet instructions, add the onion & seasoning, mix well, leave for a few minutes, and adjust the mix until it is “dough” like. On a clean, flat surface place the mix, cover in Clingfilm & rollout until about 5-8mm thick, remove the Clingfilm and using a bowl the same size as your small frying pan cut around, continue until you have used up the mix, reworking any left over.
In a small frying pan, cook each one until lightly browned and free in the frying pan to move, turnover and repeat, remove and leave on a cake rack to cool.
Mix the Passata, Worcester sauce, balsamic vinegar & tomato puree together, then coat each base, add the cheddar, shared between all of them, add your topping, then finish with Mozzarella. Preheat the oven to 200C and cook for 20-30 mins until the cheese has melted but not burnt!

This is why people get confused! PP has posted a direct quote from the SW website to say that smash pizza ISN'T free, and then this recipe has been posted which says it is! Pete, can you add the correct syn value to your recipe to help people maybe? Just a thought?

When this recipe was published instant mash was declared free,it's still a debatable issue, but as you are mixing the mash with water, the changes shouldn't be that much even though you cook it in an oven, the quantity used is quite low per pizza-25g per small pizza , so the syn value should also be low......

Even so, it's still synned-and the SW website clearly states that-as PP posted before you put the recipe on! Surely you can see the point I'm making about confusing people??
