Superfree, how many have you tried?

You know how you get those times when you really should be doing something, but you do all sorts of other things to put off the moment. Displacement Activity is the proper name for it!

Well, this afternoon when I should have been doing something else, I decided to look in my SW book at the list of superfree fruit and vegetables and make a note of those I have never tried before.

Wow, I was impressed with myself! Of the 66 vegetables listed there were only 10 I had not tried, and of the 71 fruit, only 7 I had not tried.

I am going to try to track down some of them next week, and eventually try all of them. Only thing is, some of them I have never heard of before!

Displacement Activity can be a good thing in some situations, at least in this one you did something useful. Only 10 vegetables and 7 fruit items not tried is impressive! Well done :).

Which ones had you not heard of out of curiosity??

Vegetables: Balor Beans, Chioca, Choko, Cluster Beans, Curly Kale, Keirela, Kohlrabi, Okra, Papri Beans, Seakale.

Fruit: Amla, Babaco, Cashew Fruit, Feijoa, Jambu Fruit, Jujube, Mammie Apple.

Obviously, some of these are going to be available only at specialist shops, but I am determined to track them down! But first I need to pop over to Wikipedia to find out what they look like.

I might have a look at doing that myself! In fact will do so now. ! (better than the laundry I need to do!)
I haven't tried......
Amla, Babaco, Boysenberries, Cashew fruit, custrad apple, Feijoa, Grenadilla, Jambu fruit, jujube, kiwano,Loquats, mammi apple, mangosteen, medlars, ortaniques, pomelo, rambutan, sapodilla, tamarillos or tayberries....that I know of any way!

Or.....acorn squash, alfalfa sprouts, balor beans, chioca, chinese leaves, choko, cluster beans, karela, kohlrabi, papri beans, radicchio, salsify

Would be interested in any ideas of where to get the more unusual ones from and recipes to cook with them etc be a nice challenge to do for myself I think!

Aha - some more displacement activity. Much more fun than the washing!

Boysenberries are a cross between a raspberry and a blackberry. I have seen them in Waitrose occasionally, but they are rather soft and don't pack or travel very well, so you don't see them often. Tayberries are similar.

Grenadilla is a bit like a large passion fruit - Waitrose sometimes has them.

Mangosteen and rambutans are similar - a bit like lychees.

Ortaniques and pomelos are citrus fruits and large supermarkets usually have them from time to time.

Kiwanos are small melon type fruit - I have seen them in Waitrose and Tesco.

Tamarillos are nice - they look a bit like a tomato.

As for the vegetables - chinese leaves are easy to find, usually with the lettuce or celery, they look like a long pale lettuce and you can have it as a salad or in a stir fry.

Radicchio is the red Italian salad leaf - you quite often find it in those bags of salad for a bit of colour. Slightly bitter taste.

Salsify is a root - long and white. Very tasty. Needs to be peeled carefully.

Acorn squash is one of the many small squashes - you will probably have to wait for the autumn to see them in supermarkets.

Alfafa sprouts are like bean sprouts but very fine and tiny. I get mine from Waitrose or Tesco and have them in sandwiches. Or you can grow your own very easily.

Loving this displacement therapy - I'm the queen of it most days! lol

Am gonna check out the list later and see how I'm faring with the lesser known foods.

My C said a few weeks ago that she's making a determined effort to try at least one new food every week - and if she can't manage to get hold of something she's never eaten before then she's trying to cook a receipe she's never tried before. Just thought it was a good idea to help prevent boredom in our diets.

Those of us "of a certain age" may look back and remember what shops used to stock when we were children, and realise what an extraordinary choice we have now.

Even looking back a short while - butternut squash is a fairly new thing and where would SW folk be without it now?!

Hate Raddichio too bitter for me

Love Chinese leaves.
Alfafa sprouts are so easy to grow!

Curly Kale is lovely especailly if you like dark green veg, very very good for you. However If you buy it unwashed you need to soak it in very salty water for 1/2 hour before rinsing well, then cooking.
Cooked slugs don't half put you off lol!

As well as all the fruit aforementioned I've never tried Mango (don't like the smell)

If you are ever lucky enough to see Alfonso (Alphonso) mangos, then do try one. They are just so gorgeous. They are also expensive!

Made butternut squash soup once, hated it. It was far too sweet for me, had to throw it, hubby wasnt keen either. Sorry! lol

I don't think there are many on the list that I haven't tried. I find there is a much wider choice available here in Canada/US, than what I was used to back in the UK. I love going into my local fresh produce grocery store and finding something new to try.

The only one I don't think I would try is fiddleheads, unless someone tells me they are delicious, as just the look of them scares me. lol

As well as superfree foods, there are so many different grains, beans, pulses etc out there too, but how many of us stick to just the usual rice. My newest favourite grain is Millet. I am making a pilaf tonight with some. It has great health benefits too and very yummy.

Sorry I went a bit off from your topic of Superfree, it is surprising what one subject can get you thinking about. lol

Ok ok i just googled boysenberry its a blackberry -__- LOL. Have been eating loads of them though never heard that name for it before..Ohh ok its a bit more then that cross of a blackberry, a raspberry and a logan berry....how odd lol. Never seen them in the shops, bet they taste nice though :D

It's odd - I absolutely love butternut squash - roasted, or in a risotto, or with other vegetables.

But in a soup - oh no. I hate it.
