SW the Vegan or Vegetarian way....

Ooh nice :) let us know!

please do let us know about the cheese as that is the one thing stopping me from going vegan right now.

I do subscribe to the monthly vegan boxes though and was surprisedlast month which was my first box to receive the most amazing tasting vegan chocolate by Vego, it tastes like nutella, me and OH who is a real meat eater were fighting over the last piece!

can anyone recommend a good site or magazine for tasty veggie meals? ones that don't just replace meat with quorn? most meals also include eggs which I despise!

Have you got this months box yet? I'm waiting with baited breath. That vega choc bar was gorgeous but nearly 1000kcal for the whole thing!! Yikes! I get vegetarian living. All the recipes, where possible have vegan tweaks if they are not already vegan friendly :)

Hello *waves* Can I join please? I'm mostly vegan but find when doing SW I really struggle as lots of stuff that would be free/low syn as a veggie is fairly high in syns for vegans (mayo, yoghurt etc) so I've decided to be a bit more flexible and also swing both ways (also not literally lol). I've lots of weight to lose, so it's got to be something I can sustain long term & fit in with cooking for my family.

I love Isa & have most of her books and she does have a website; it's called The Post Punk Kitchen & there are quite a few recipes on there which can be adapted to be SW friendly. I've also got a couple of Happy Herbivore cook books & they are oil free so very SW friendly (& there is also a website with recipes on) so I'm trying to use some of those too.

I'm looking forward to my Vegankind box too although hadn't started SW last month so the coconut bacon went down a treat...dread to think of the syns though!

I will try that magazine then-thanks for the recommendation :)

was the bacon nice? did it taste like bacon? may have to get mine out as I fdont half miss the taste of bacon!!

scrap that, just opened packet, took a few pieces, chewed them, felt sick and washed the taste away with some koko choc milk :sigh: guess its not for everyone!

Sunflower I LOVED the coconut bacon; it's hard to describe taste wise but it was kind of salty, sweet AND coconutty. I could live on coconut anyway (which is most definite not SW friendly -not the amount I could eat!)

Can't believe the Vega bar was so high in calories. My 3 year old and OH scoffed loads of it anyway so at least I didn't eat all of it!

I think I had expectations of it being bacon tasting and it was a taste I wasn't prepared for, everytime I crave bacon I think of little chubby piglets and get the quorn sausages out instead and they always hit the spot!

Those Vega bars are actually nicer than a lot of normal choc x

on another note I saw about a minimins meet up in London-are any of you veggies/vegans planning on attending?

Nooo! I loved it! Mind you I'm probably (definitely) a bit odd though as I've never liked bacon :) I've been veggie for about 25 years though so I probably wouldn't know what it was meant to taste like!

OpalLily, Marigold do a vegan vegetable stock.

Sunflower, I really like Cook Vegetarian magazine - most of the recipes are fairly easy and straightforward, and a lot of them have vegan tweaks.

There are a lot of good recipes on a website called Fat Free Vegan (I'm not sure about the rules about posting links here, but Google will find it!).

I hadn't heard of Cook Vegetarian magazine Jo, I just had a quick look and it looks great-thanks for the recommendation!

I don't know the rules about posting links either, but Opal-Lily if you google The Vegankind you should get info about the box. It's a monthly subscription box and you get sent various vegan samples (food and non-food) to try. Lots of them are full size so I think it's quite good value for money (think it's about £12 a month) & you get to try stuff you might not otherwise. The only thing I've had so far that I really didn't like was the powdery shampoo in the last box. I found the texture & smell really off putting!

I'll keep you posted about the cheese later - I may even take a snap and post it so you can see for yourselves ;) Fingers crossed! My lunch today was a kale tabbouleh with lettuce wraps... <img src="http://www.minimins.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=148694"/> What is this box you're all talking about?! Sounds awesome!! xx

Forgot to say your food looks delicious!

Wow lots of posts!! I buy the Tesco free from medium cheese which is the nicest of the ones they sell in my opinion (it's basically repackaged Sheese) and costs less :) It melts really well and goes a bit crispy in the oven, very nice! The best cheeses I have found are Vegusto (new customers get a good deal from their website) but they are more expensive yet are very close to the real thing so I sometimes have it as a treat.

With regards to stock, I use Oxo vegetable cubes and with gravy I either make my own (special occasions) or buy Bisto, all the veggie ones are vegan. Label reading becomes much easier over time and you can spot nasties easily - most brands now label things like milk and it's proteins as an allergen and some brands make them bold to make it easier to read packages :) I do my food shop online with Tesco who also produce a vegan food list every 3 months on their real food website and that is sooo handy for Tesco own-brand products :)

I noticed M&S did one in June too!! That's so handy, thanks again for such great advice.

I spent ages in that little Tesco last night looking at labels, it did feel a bit exhausting but it seems that supermarket's own brand labelling is a lot clearer than branded goods. I got a little confused with the dark chocolate though as they 70% choc, for example, said it was suitable for vegetarians (didn't state vegans) yet I couldn't see anything on the label?!

This one... T.Cont 74% Plain Chocolate Bar 100G - Groceries - Tesco Groceries

Is that because it may contain milk? i.e. none used specifically but made on the same production line... does that mean vegans can't have it?

The labelling is confusing - they have to state that it may contain milk for allergy sufferers but it could be that it's made in the same factory but not necessarily the same production line, just that the risk of contamination is there. I think I have had that one from Tesco :) the chances of it having milk in are so slim - did you know that Fry's peppermint and orange cream bars are vegan? And raspberry ruffles!

wow I love frys peppermint and orange creams and ruffles!! this going vegan lark is becoming more appealing![

looks yummy! sorry I might have missed it but did you say this Vegan diet for you was for a week or will you continue do you think? by the way koko chocolate milk and almond breeze choc milk are both vegan and are really tasty, I usually have a glass of one or the other after a run

I have my eye on either of those or I've heard the oatly one is nice too - going to see what the big tesco superstore has in stock!! Hopefully they'll have one of them unlike the little one I went to last night :)

I am trying being vegan for a week after having a very naughty July. I wanted to do something to make me more conscious of what I'm eating and for a little challenge. Not quite for the same ethical reasons as other people, I have to admit. I guess I'll see how I feel, how I get on and take it from there?! Maybe the more ideas and things posted on here will inspire me to do it for longer!

Also, on a separate note... you mentioned running... there are a couple of running forums too under teams and challenges if you fancy joining one of those ;) xx
