To spread on bread? Low calorie

    Any ideas ladies on what to spread on bread when making a ham or chicken or beef sandwich? I've tried eating without but the bread feels too dry.

    Which of these would be best? I don't want to waste a load of money buying each one if someone's already tried them all and can advise.


    • butter
    • low fat soft cheese
    • creme fraiche
    • cottage cheese (does it spread?)
    • live yoghurt
    • low sugar salad cream
    • low sugar sandwich spread
    • something I have not yet thought of

    I use Tesco healthy living low fat soft cheese (I think it's about £1.10 for a 250g tub)
    50g is only 57 calories and you can easily use half of that if you're having meat and only want to use it as a spread. I have the 50g because I have it with salad and that 50g is looooads!

    I suppose if you're only having a little bit and you log it on MFP you can still have butter/salad cream etc.

    Cheers Bluey... funnily enough I have ordered 2 tubs of that low fat soft cheese already, to try it. Am currently using up a pack of Kerrygold that a friend left behind, hence looking for a substitute.

    I wonder how many calories are in a scraping of low fat soft cheese compared with a scraping of low sugar salad cream. The latter would give a bit of "zing" to a sandwich.

    I put the Tesco healthy living extra light soft cheese and the Tesco healthy living salad cream into MFP, I put down 5g because that's about a teaspoon I think. There isn't much difference at all.
    The soft cheese is 6 calories and the salad cream is 7 calories per 5g.
    So both would be fine to have.

    I use heinz extra light salad cream - 15g is 22 cals. Works well I think :)

    A good alternative to butter is Lurpak lightest spread. I find that for a low fat spread it still has a buttery taste, which I prefer over plasticky tasting margarines. 38kcals and 4g fat in 10g which I think is 2 level teaspoons.

    I often use 30g of tesco sweet Chile light choice soft cheese its loads and creamy and only 50 cals I think we have all dieted so long that we are programmed to get as much out of our cals as possible, y dont you have exactly what you want on your bread and just count the cals but at least you really really enjoy it, we will have plenty of time to worry about our scrapes of lowest cal spread when we have lost a good few stone and dont have the spare cals ... try the 30g of soft cheese with red onion made into a toasty oooo delish and so few cals x

    I use the purple flora (extraextra light) or the extra extra light hellmans mayo or the heinz 70% less fat salad cream :)

    Calorie Counting, controlled carbs, good nutrition and Slimpods.
    I use Laughing Cow light triangles, no need to weigh.

    On toast I grill a few cherry tomatoes and use them instead of spread.

    Mustard might be an idea if you like it.

    If you like the taste of plain yogurt, you can make that into sandwich spread.

    Get a small strainer, prop it in a bowl. Put a coffee filter in the strainer. Put yogurt in the coffee filter. Leave it alone in the fridge for a few hours. You'll come back to find liquid in the bowl, and yogurt that has turned the consistency of soft cheese in the strainer. I like to add fresh chopped herbs with mine. Tastes really nice on sandwiches with lots of veggies--tomato, onion, cucumber, peppers, etc.

    I also like mushing up avocado to spread on sandwiches or wraps. They're high in calories, but also high in healthy fats.

    I checked out Hellman's extra light and wow it's only 70c for 100g whereas the regular is 722c (that is not a typo).

    No wonder I am so far. I used to eat lashings of the stuff. Oh dearie me!

    Typically the purple flora or the EL Mayo/SC are the ones that are barely ever on offer too unlike the bad options. If you see them, try and stock up what you could realistically eat before they go off :)


    If I remember rightly, the purple flora was the only 'marge/butter' type product that you could eat on orlistat. This was about 4/5 years ago though when I was first prescribed it so it could have changed.

    Mmm mayonnaise :drool:, that's a definitely a major contributor to my current situation, I couldn't get enough of the stuff in my sandwiches. I tried Hellmann's extra light but for me it was no substitute. I'd recommend Kraft light thousand island dressing - it's fat free, has a lovely taste and gives that nice 'zing'.
