Week 1 Results

Hello everyone,

I apologise for the late update, because it's the nature of my job that I just can't be bothered to do anything (too tired).

Anyhoo, started this diet on the 17th this month and on the 24th, I had lost 13lbs. I weighed myself again this morning (I know I shouldn't have) and have lost a further 4lbs, so in total I've lost 17lbs in 10 days. To be honest with you all, I've not been drinking anywhere near the minimum 2 litres a day water. If I really push myself then I can get to about a litre, I can't stand water. Has anyone got any ideas for alternative fluids I can take with a bit of flavour?

Of late, I can't smell normal because everything smells garlic-y. Has this happened to anyone else?

I bought Asda Measure Up bars, but I'm really struggling to eat them. So, I was thinking can I replace them with an apple a day because they're low in carbohydrates and will I still lose weight at the expected rate and keep me in ketosis?

Also, the last few days, I've only been having 1 shake a day, nothing else because I don't like the bars and the shakes so was thinking of introducing multivitamin tablets.

Sorry for the long-ish post but I feel I need to address these issues with people, who probably have gone through similar phase.

Many thanks people

Kind regards

You really need to have the 3 packs a day, just taking a vitamin tablet or an apple is not a good replacement, and you could make yourself dangerously ill if you cut out the packs.

There's a thread in the stickies about other things you can drink, e.g. black tea, coffee, coke zero, dr pepper zero and some of the flavoured waters.

You can always have the packs half at a time, and space them out through the day. In the FAQ thread there are some ideas about different ways you can have the packs, e.g. hot shakes, add coffee, cinnamon, add spices to the soups.

Anyway, good luck, and please try and get up to your 3 packs a day and 2 litres of liquid.
Good luck :)

You need to be eating the 3 packs a day as Rachel has just said. As it is the diet only gives you just over 600 cals a day so you NEED to eat all 3 packs each day or you will become malnourished. You are probably losing a lot of extra weight because you aren't consuming enough calories.

You cannot substitute a pack for an apple. An apple does NOT have the vitamin content or enough calories to substitute a meal. Apples will also knock you out of ketosis i believe.

Your post worries me to be honest. This really isn't the right diet for you. I think you should perhaps consider something more calorie controlled with real food. I think only having one 200 calorie shake a day will cause you serious damage and could be bordering on dangerous. It seems pointless you continuing on this diet if you are only going to have one meal a day which isn't enough.

The water intake is SO important. When you are on a VLCD you are not getting water from food. Your body relies on water to keep going so the 2L minimum IS needed. You will become dehydrated, weak and ill.

Please please please, if you aren't able to follow the diet as it should be followed, look at other options before you make yourself ill.

Yorkie Dude you're going to make yourself very ill only having one shake and only 1 litre of water, what on earth are you living on? It's counter-productive to your weight loss do that because your body will go into starvation mode!

Im quite alarmed by your post! You must have 3 packs a day, you cant just substitute 2 packs for multivitamins tablets and an apple!! You get your daily allowance of vitamins and nutrients from the packs and you also need to consume a minimum of 2litres of water a day to keep your body balanced! You can make yourself very very ill by abusing the concept of the diet by substituting your "meals" in the way that you have described in your OP.

I really feel that you would benefit from stopping this diet and trying a different diet where you can eat food and count and log your calories like has already been said by other members!

I wish you all the best for your future weight loss xx

I think the lack of water is the most dangerous part of all this. In the short term (a couple of weeks if you are pretty healthy to start, maybe more under medical supervision), your body can cope just fine with no food intake at all and having a complete fast, drinking only water. From the very start, the water is the most crucial thing. It will protect your body by flushing out the toxins which get released as your fat is broken down. As your body lays down fat, it stores other things in that fat too, such as any medication you may have been taking at various points, chemicals/pesticides from your food over the years, all kinds of things which when the fat 'melts', are suddenly whizzing around in your bloodstream to get dealt with by your liver and kidneys. For the sake of your body and to stop causing damage it is vital that you drink, at the very very least 2litres.... more if you are also eating bars instead of shakes because at least shakes provide a little more fluid.

Not using the packs in the proper way of couse is not going to help on top of things, but the water absolutely has to be your priority, and then if you stay on this more than a week or two getting the packs right becomes just as important. You probably won't notice much apart from feeling extra weak or tired/headaches, etc, but you will be doing internal damage on only 1litre a day and you will pay for it in years to come (sorry, but true).

Didn't you get a natural thirst after the first day or two? I hate water too but found that after a couple of days my body was crying out for water so much that i didn't care anymore and actually began to like it more... and now i drink around 3litres a day. I also hate coffee, and especially black coffee, but i've now started taking a black coffee in the evenings as a treat and i actually quite enjoy it as i found my taste changed. Maybe try this too.

Yorkie Dude, I hope you can get some rest over the weekend, even your post sounds tired.

That's a great loss you've had, 17lbs is no mean feat; but you may start to see/feel really bad side effects from lack of sufficient nutrition. Most of these VLCDs have been approved by doctors and weight-control forums, who specialise in administering the right calories and vit/mins RDAs per day for efficient weight loss.

If you are only taking in 200 cals per day, then your body is going to believe it is starving and your weight loss with come to a complete standstill as your body will hold on to every last calorie it can. You are also in danger of seriously hurting your stored muscle mass, which will weaken you significantly and could cause knock on effects.

Force yourself to drink 2 litres of water. Try peppermint or green teas. Or look into buying water flavourings, I know they have them on other meal replacement systems. Tea and coffee can count too.

Also, like Rachel said, split your packs and make them with a bit more water. Try blending them with ice or making the chocolate hot. It doesn;t suit everyone, but I aim to eat 4-5 times a day on a VCLD - I rarely split my breakfast, but I split my lunch and sometimes my evening meal. So my brain still thinks I am regularly eating meals and snacks.

Whatever diet or regime you do, they all say the same thing. Water intake is KEY! It's probably why you feel so tired, you are massively dehydrated. Make it your mini goal for this week coming - 2 litres of water per day inlcuding some coffee/tea.

Hope you feel better.

To be perfectly blunt you need to do this diet properly or stop doing it at all.

What youre doing is incredibly unhealthy and downright dangerous. Just had a look at your previous posts and notice youre a 22 stone 6 ft 2 man and your trying to survive on 200 cals a day - good grief are you trying to kill yourself?

As others have said you absolutely CANNOT substitute a VLCD pack with an apple and some vitamins. Youre basically proposing to live on 200 cals, 1 litre of water and multivitamins. I barely know where to start with how bad an idea that is.

Id say quite honestly a VLCD is NOT the diet for you and youd be better reverting to either calorie counting or WW etc.

Please for goodness sake STOP what youre doing before you do yourself some serious harm

Sound advice by each and everyone of you, many thanks :)

New day, new challenge: I'll try my utmost best to drink at leat 2 litres of fluid. The only problem is when it's busy at work, I hardly get a loo break but I'll try and get around it.

Someone mentioned the water flavourings, where can I buy it from please?

I wish Exante could let us choose the shakes because I can manage to drink the chocolate shake, only just, but the others are horrible. Also horrible are the Asda Measure Up bars. Are BL any better?

I won't quit and heed everyones' advice and take the 3 packs a day and 2 litres of fluid because I think I'm off to a flyer, 17lbs so far and well on course to losing 2 stones in the first month, so I was thinking of drinking probably 500ml of Asda Diet Cola, about 3-4 cups of coffee with artificial sweeteners (are these allowed?) and the rest will be water (bleurgh)

Please can anyone tell me if this is acceptable, if not, I'm heading for a disaster.

Really appreciate everyones' input.

Kind regards

To be honest if Asda diet coke is going to help then absolutely go for it. Remember that and your coffee all count towards your 2 litres A few glasses of cola a few coffees and you'll pretty much be there ;)

You're truly a star, thanks for the assurance ;)

Knowing this, I will definitely increase the fluid intake now.

Have a nice day Starlight.

Off to bed now  (just finished work)

Hi I have added cinnamon to the banana shake and coffee to the vanilla and crushed sweetener to the strawberry makes a world of difference. Tesco also do strawberry water and apple with no citric acid which is very nice too
