For tomato based pasta sauces, I always use passata. Add whatever herbs (dried or fresh) to it, and let it simmer on a low heat for about 15mins, it thickens up really nicely and the herbs flavour it well too. I also add about 1/2 tsp of granulated sweetener to it.
