Anyone familiar with the symptoms of a stroke?

Hi all,

I don't normally post really personal things on here, but I'm wondering whether anyone knows much about strokes.

My mum and I are quite worried about my dad. He's been a bit unsteady for a couple of weeks, and he fell outside at the weekend while watering the tomatoes. He finally admitted on Tuesday that he's experiencing weakness down his right side and he thought he might have had a stroke. He's had no problems with his speech or his vision, just the weakness which doesn't seem to be getting better. In fact it seems to be getting worse.

He has been to the doctor and he's got an appointment with the stroke clinic on Tuesday, but the doctor wasn't convinced that he's had a stroke.

I'm just worrying that it could be something more serious like a brain tumour...he had stage 4 bowel cancer 4 years ago, which they say they managed to kill through a combination of chemo, radiotherapy and surgery, but I'm worried this could be a secondary tumour from that.

I know I shouldn't stress about it until after he's had his appointment and his scan, but it's easier said than done :(

Anyone with any experience of either of these things?

Sian xx

I don't have any advice or know anything about it, but I didn't want to read and run. Sending a big hug and hoping your dad is soon on the mend. Thinking of you and your family xx

I've no experience either, parents are such a worry, we found out when he'd passed over that OHs dad had been complaining of breathless for weeks before his heart attack & did nothing about it!

Anyhow, I thought if you'd had a stroke you were not only left with the slurred speech, loss of movement down one side, but also extreme tiredness, it could be so many things with your dad, even a trapped nerve, is he in pain?

Will he find out on Tuesday if he's had a stroke & then if not what's the nxt step, what a worry & you're back to school soon as well. x

I know, my mum and I are really cross he didn't say anything sooner. At least my mum would have had some support then but I'll be 60 miles away from Sunday :(

We're hoping he should find out on Tuesday. I think they'll do a scan (we're assuming a brain scan) and then if it's not a stroke I think they'll start testing for things like Parkinson's, which is another thing the doctor mentioned but didn't think it was. He's not in any pain, it's just the weakness down his right side.

Parents are such a major cause of stress! Xx

I only know this from the NHS adverts:

Face - can they smile? Has one side of their face fallen?
Arms - can they raise both arms above their head?
Speech - is their speech slurred?
Time - time to call 999

I do, however, know someone who has had Bells Palsy. It can look like a stroke with some symptoms (fallen facial muscles which causes odd speech, and weakness often on one side). I don't know a huge amount about it but I believe it's not as serious as a stroke and some people recover fine and others have muscular issues for a long, long time. Could be something like this?

As you say, you can't be sure until he has had all the checks but I really hope he's okay.

Thanks all of you. I've seen a couple of people who've had Bell's palsy, and he definitely hasn't got any drooping of the face, so I'm not sure whether it's that. Hopefully we'll find out on Tuesday, and if it is something, I hope it's not something too sinister :( xx

Afternoon all. Thankyou for your replies. I've been at my friend's today but I had a text from my mum to say that she'd taken my dad to if hospital because he'd been getting pain down his arm through the night. They're doing tests and scans but I haven't heard any more since. I'll update later, but I'd like to thank you all for your concern xx

Hi there. I just thought I'd give a quick update on my dad. They asked her to go into the hospital today so they could talk to mum and dad together...they've found a lesion in the frontal lobe of his brain. They're going to do an MRI in the next couple of days, then maybe they'll be able to tell us if it's a tumour or something else, and whether it's treatable or terminal :-( I almost wish it had been a stroke, although it's horrible to say it xx

Hi there. I just thought I'd give a quick update on the situation, as I know how frustrating it can be when you reply to a thread and then no more is heard from the OP. My dad's got to go down to the hospital in Cardiff this week...he's going to have a biopsy on the tumour to see whether it's malignant or benign, and they've told him that if they can operate they will while he's down in Cardiff. At least he's finally going ot be in the hands of specialist neurosurgeons, so that's a positive thing.

They also came back to tell him that when they'd done the full body MRI they'd identified a couple of small nodules in his lungs...we haven't heard any more about that, but I don't think they're treating the lungs as a priority at the moment.

I can't wait for Tuesday to be over...we just want to know now what exactly the situation is and what the prognosis is for my dad :( xx

Hope all goes well , , my thoughts are with you and your family xxx
