Here is what I think the problem with that is...

The act of chewing makes your body think that there is some food making it's way to your stomach. In preparation for that, your stomach starts to produce acid to break down what ever you are eating. As there is no food going in your stomach, the acid ends up burning your stomach and possibly give you heart burn/pain. Also the whole situation makes you feel hungry.
I would suggest some kind of mouth spray, even though thats not allowed, it wont do as much damage as the gum.

Shaz1980, I find carrying a small toothpaste and brush around and when I nip to the toilet for one of my many daily trips I have a quick brush and it freshens my mouth up. Nickie xx
