Consultant telling us not to eat syn free products!

My C actively points out new low syn / syn free quick stuff like that for the very reason - it's quick & easy, in fact she often brings in new stuff for us to taste, having said that, she also cooks from the recipe books sometimes and brings that in too.

She is providing info so that we can all follow SW in a manner that suits each one of us in class, what we choose to eat is down to the individual, she's just showing us what's available

My C says that it is ok to eat them but we should try to bulk them out by adding extra veg or by having a side salad with them

She wants to try thinking as a hobby!
Life sometimes dictates you need something quick.
Not everyone can cook.
Not everyone has the facilities, when I left care i had one saucepan, one frying pan and a shared kitchen!

Some of SW recipes for curry can have a staggering 12-13 items to buy, spices etc I can't afford to go get them all in one go and i have a few already!

In an ideal world we would all be sitting down to lovingly prepared meals, made from scratch with seasonal fresh ingredients, served on beautiful china with elegant cutlery, freshly ironed linen napkins and tablecloths, and someone else to do the washing up.

In my ideal world I would have Nigel Slater's lovely kitchen and garden - and Nigel Slater to cook for me.

But that's just not real life for most people. There are days when I come through the door from one meeting and have half an hour to eat something, grab the paperwork for the next meeting, and get out of the door again. We all have deadlines, responsibilities, families, bad days, whatever.

Personally I don't like mugshots or processed pasta dishes. But that doesn't give me the right to tell anyone else not to have them, if that is what they like and it suits them when they are in a rush. My favourite quick item is one of the Tilda flavoured rice pouches. And yes, I do know the syn value of all of them. And yes, I do know it is not a "proper" meal, but it is better than nothing, and better than fainting from hunger, falling asleep in a meeting, or grabbing a Mars bar.

There is a danger that this consultant is just going to set the standard so high that people will think that they can't do it, that SW is not for them in the real world. And that's not what SW is all about.

Items like this allow us freedom to have busy lives! Sometimes time dictates that I don't get my evening meal till 9pm, no way I'm starting cooking from scratch then!

I agree with Anna, she is setting the standard too high to be reasonably achievable. Sw themselves recognise that sometimes we need something quick and feature these products in the magazine. If they didn't want us to eat them they wouldn't promote them.

I do SW at home on my own and have only been to one meeting and met one SW consultant - but this consultant sounds like a real prat.

Personally, I would have a quiet word with her and ask her why she is so against using quick meals. Ok there are lots of additives but as kingleds said it is your choice.

I'd rather eat a low syn curry than grabbing a pizza, a McD or even worse.

Obviously its better to cook from scratch if you can, thats a no brainer. But I think its a bit silly of her to scaremonger like that.
A pasta 'n serve is better than a mcdonalds if you're in a hurry or a bit short on cash etc. It wouldnt be in the book etc if you shouldnt have them at all.
We have also had a mugshots in the raffle prize and my C never said a word.

She meant not to eat them at all. I would only ever eat a Pasta & Sauce as a main meal, never as a snack. Having said that, as long as you stay within your syns, they could be eaten as a snack despite their high calorie content.
A lot of the batchelors pasta n sauce are free on ee and green if made up with just water, so not synned. They are ideal as a quick lunch when you dont have time to prepare something, I think its fine on odd occasions, just not all the time

Perhaps the next time she gets on her high horse about these products you should direct her to the 100 Extra Easy Days book. In it there are meal suggestions using a pasta n sauce and low fat super noodles!

I remember years back being told at length about the difference between free food and syn free foods and to try to eat free and not syn free.

It's a good point - for example, mug shots would be a syn free food, whereas pasta is free.

My current consultant would never say such a thing though as she loves her packets of stuff! So, my previous consultant has given her personal opinion.

I agree with all of you in that she is not quite right in saying you shouldn't be eating these things regularly, but perhaps that we should try to eat different things if possible.

There's always a lot of "report them to SW" comments on threads like these, I'm more of a "quiet chat outside of group" type person if I'm confused with something. Explain that you are not happy with what she says and that it conflicts with things in the SW magazines and recipe books, and see what she comes out with in response.

Yes she is giving her personal opinion, I'm sure a lot of consultants do. We're told you can't split HEX's (I know a lot of consultants say this), I know SW say you can. I don't get too upset about it, I just do my own thing.

Oh totally, my old consultant used to distinguish between Free and Syn-Free and it *is* important, they are very different and we should try to eat Real Free stuff where we can. In an ideal world it would be Superfree, then Free and then Syn-Free last of all.

But that's in an ideal world, not a dictatorial law for every moment of every day :)

Cooking from scratch and eating free food is obviously the best way. I'm retired now so have all the time in the world and 99% of my meals are cooked from scratch. (but I'm waiting for the day I get to target as my "treat" is a pizza of which I'm an addict and haven't had for 11 whole months!)

But lets get real!

There are days when you have to run in from work and be out again in 30 minutes. Been there, seen it, got the t-shirt.

So as I said, if you haven't got something home-made in the freezer, grabbing a low syn curry HAS to be better than grabbing a pizza. Surely?

Our consultant told us about the mug shots had one for lunch they were great :)! Don't think your consultant should be saying this though! Everyone life style is different we just need to adapted to that :- D x

In fact thinking about it my last consultant every week had a huge piece of card on the table leading towards WI with *loads* of syn-free and low-syn product wrappers stapled to it as well as empty bottles and jars of stuff that was free or low syn.

All my previous consultants have passed round items that are free/low syn. And we've always had that sort of thing in the fruit bowl on occasion.

She needs to get with the programme

Tell ya what, get a Pasta n Sauce, wrap it up, put a big sparkly bow on and give it to her for Xmas! :8855:

Last night at group when she asked me how I've managed to lose consistently in the 3 months since starting SW, I told her that eating low syn things like pasta n sauce and fat free super noodles really keep me on the straight and narrow. I also put 2 mug shots into the Slimmer of the week bowl. :D
