Deflating the Bouncy Castle

Hahha aww love the horse thing! Seems mad about the weight thing. I got summoned to a school nurses office and got a letter sent home when I was about 7 saying my weight was falling above average or something. I walked into the nurses office and she said "OH MY GOODNESS you're a tiny little girl" and she weighed me and off I went. My dad made a joke about the letter as it was ridiculous but he said something sarcastically like "oh no Lara is fat!" which was so untrue. Come to think of it it was around that age I began skipping lunches and doing cute but completely ineffective things to lose weight. So in summary - screw their charts! But work with them to get where you want to x. X

wow - well, i can but dream - though i'd hope i'm happier. I'm certainly older than she ever made it. :(

You've lost the weight of a small horse - that is quite ridiculous - in a good way! xx

Evening Spangles --

I've not read the whole of your diary, but your journey has been amazing from what I have read. You have done so well to stick with the diet and the motivation of being a mother certainly seems to be helping you stay motivated. I had my second child at 37, so the fact that you are starting a bit later than some people is not an issue. I am pretty sure that being a bit older made me more relaxed and I had my priorities in order with her.

Thanks honey - other than the medical issues / potential complications, I'm not too worried about my age. I have very few friends who had a child before their mid thirties... the last two years have been Unstoppable Babyland, but none of the mummies have been younger than about 33, and the majority in the 35-38 spread (with a couple in their forties). It just seems to be how my mates have done things - probably because we all know each other from quite hardcore socialising... clubs, squat parties, raves etc - and back then when we were a bit younger, if we'd have had kids we just wouldn't have been doing that stuff. Also, there's the thing that none of us could have afforded a place with a spare bedroom until fairly recently - cost of renting or buying, even in South London, is pretty eye-watering.

So yes - i'm not especially old among the new parents I know. Which is a relief - but also adds to the pressure, cos it feels like all my peers are doing it!

Hi Spangles,

I've spent most of my day reading your diary. I'm on Day 1 and so have been trying to motivate myself by reading lots of success stories.

I'm sure this will sound really cheesy but I think you are pretty damn amazing. You've stuck at it through thick and thin (no pun intended) and you look absolutely beautiful. I love your style as well - am going to reward myself with a new Vivienne of Holloway dress when I reach my goal (ok, maybe when I lose the first 2 stones...)

Just wanted to say "thanks" - your diary is really inspiring.

Thanks honey. Your turn now - go kick the arse of this diet!

Spent the last couple of days reading your diary...distracted me from being hungry and bored :p. Your weight loss is amazing and you look fantastic in the pics :D. Thanks for the inspiration xx

Most of my mates who had kids at the same time as me (29 fr the first) were in their mid 30's. Its much more normal now for those of us who work I think, to work first and get the kids after we have the house mortgage etc.

Unlike my step-niece who has spent most of her teenage years trying and is finally pregnant at 18. She is very pleased as now she will get given a flat! Last month she was very pleased her boyfriend had 'passed' his disability test - which in her terms meant qualified as disabled so he could get benefits.
It seems backward to me - I would have thought 'passed' meant was not disabled and could get off his arse and find a job!
And no - I am not being mean to disabled people, I cannot for the life of me understand what is wrong with him. Its some kind of hereditary condition he caught from his parents, both of them, which means 'unable to get out of bed for more than 4 hours a day'.

Oops - sorry, slightly off topic. Anyway, you are no way too old to start a family, just right I would say. Don't let the pressure get to you though, as thats more effective as a contraceptive than any other. Honestly, after months of trying, I got my son because I gave up for xmas and got hideously drunk. . . . Maybe thats why he was such a chilled baby, alcohol soaked too early.

Hah - sadly we don't have a mortgage yet - and if we ever do, it won't be a house. Cheapest mortgage on a 2 bed flat, forget about a garden, in our comparatively cheap bit of south london is around £200,000. It's not that so much as finding a 25% deposit on that as that's what first time buyers now need. don't happen to have £50k lying around.

Yeuch - reminds me totally why I don't want to live in London :(

No one can afford prices like that surely.

Living at a relatives until you've saved (parents in my case), I've found, is the only way!! But that's obviously not an option for everyone... It's a tough one..

not generally first time buyers, no. that's how you get to be pushing forty and living in a rented 1 bed flat.

we could afford the mortgage on a little house, as it goes... but we'd never find the deposit.

BUT - firstly, i was born in london. it's my home town. secondly, we're pretty attached to our social life. thirdly, the cultural, ethnic and religious diversity, plus diversity of lifestyle, in this part of london is brilliant. I feel a bit odd in other places. fourthly: world-class bars, theatres, art, hairdressers, museums, concerts, restaurants... hundreds of them, a bus ride away. fifthly (for now), my friends all live here. I've spent a lot of my life lonely, and having dozens of good, like-minded mates within a smallish radius is one of the key things that has made me happy in the last few years.

i think you either are a london person or you're not, tbh. but we're not all crazy or stupid: there are some very compelling reasons for putting up with the expense etc.

nah - we'd have to leave our jobs. no relatives nearby anymore (and his all live up north).

Aww you've made me remember all the good about London :) must get out there more and utilize all the theaters, museums and galleries- I've become a bit of a recluse! But the your right London is a great place to live!

I saw this and thought of you, Spangles!

This reminds of the comedianne that said, "I don't get why doctors say pregnant women should not drink... if it weren't for alcohol most of them wouldn't be pregnant." ;)

We live an hour outside of London on a rail link right into Kings Cross... but we do not get into the city often enough.

I bought a new jumper today - i think it's cute:
