Do you have PCOS?

Hiya Alyssa, I know how you feel about the excessive hair etc. I noticed that you weigh 22 stones, although you have done really well with your weightloss, I don't think you will notice any changes with your pcos until you have lost a bit more. I am 21 stone and I know mine does'nt improve until I'm below about 13stone. SOOO keep losing chuck, cuz ya doing really well. Take care.x

Hey, im 20 and i have been diagnosed with PCOS. Since ive lost about 4st my periods have came back - they disapeared - and they are now regular. The only thing i get is some slight excess facial hair which is quite dark. I read up above that some of you are shaving etc. What i do is once a month i go and get my face threaded. Its an asian way to remove hair and is a bit like plucking but does more than one hair at a time. It rather painful but sooo worth it as the longer i have been doing it, the less the hair has been there.
I just wanted to comment to recommened threading if anyone was interested ! lol

all the best x

Thanx jemma, I usually have my eye brows threaded and yes it is very good. I'm thinking of having laser treatment after my wls so I will be looking into that soon.

Hi everyone, I am just wandering if many women have Polysistic Ovary Symdrome (PCOS)?
I was thinking the other day about all my symptoms as I have it and just got to wandering, how many more overweight girlies had it too.
I can't control my symptoms whist I'm this big and I have neary all of them...so role on my wls.

Hi I had PCOS when I was in my twenty's. It did contribute to my weight gain and also gave me extra facial hair. It didn't get diagnosed untill I had a ultrasound scan for other gyni problems. I had a hysterectomy when I was twenty seven for the other problems, and luckyly PCOS dealt with at the same time!

Thanks Tracey for your story. Take care. x

I have PCOS, I was diagnosed when I was 19 and had started to pile weight on, acne and extreme facial hair. I was told I didn't even ovulate so couldn't have children. Yet I fell on 2 years ago quite by accident! ;)

I've had electrolysis for the facial hair and that worked for a while but the laser treatment is the most effective. I have to say that losing 4 stone previously meant that my periods got better, skin improved yet hair still stayed the same! I put on half a stone and now am back to losing weight so hopefully, things should improve even more.

If I wanted to go along the IVF route for more kids then I need to be under 13 stone 9lbs before they saw me. So at least another two stone to lose before I consider more kids. (Not that I am but it would be nice to keep all my options open!)

I only have 1 ovary (the other one never developed properly) and I have PCOS.

A x

That is the same as me! When I was a C-section the surgeon kept asking questions about ectopic pregnancy and I had had none of that. He later said that where it was supposed to grow, it hadn't. It explained a lot about hormonal imbalance. Also explains on every ultrasound I've had, that over the right ovary explanation, they put it down 'maternal build' which means 'very overweight!' I thought that was cheeky, I don't need it buttering up that I was fat!! ;)

Hi all,

I also have PCOS and was dx a few years ago. I have previously been on Metformin which helped me regulate my cycle and lose a little weight.

I also fell pg with my youngest after 6-10 weeks after starting the Metformin ;) There is 10 yrs between her and my son, So to all of those hoping you will conceive, It CAN happen x

I didn`t realise spots were a symptom, I have been really spotty round my chin for a few months now and couldn`t work out why LOL

I have pco too! I'm only 24 and one of my main concerns is not being able to have a baby, i'm not ready at the moment, i was told to leave it no later then 35, but it could take years to conceive anyway so that is my main problem! I also get quite spotty around my chin, and also have slight hair growth on my chin, and on my stomach. I'm trying to lose weight but nothing I do really works, anyone else who suffers with it got any ideas on special diets for pco sufferers?

Hi Becky,

I was told to follow the GI diet and to cut right down on Carbs.

Hi LiSe,

Thanks for the advice, i had heard of that, but have now looked into it more, and am currently waiting for a book in the post, i'm also trying more so to cut out puddings, choc, crisps etc! Fingers crossed!

Did you manage to lose any weight on the GI diet?

Becky

I'm a PCOS sufferer too and was diagnosed in my late teans. My main symptoms have been my irregualr cycle which early on was very sparce but then went in the opposite direction which left me with horrendous heavy periods which went on for weeks at a time. Excess hair is a problem for me but I just can't bring myself to let it grow or shave in order to have laser treatment so I am at my face all the time with the tweezers which of course leaves sore marks which isn't great.

Metformin ended up being my life saver for my periods and having lost 3 stone with LL my cycle is now every 28 days only lasting 6 days .... that is totally amazing for me as ot has never ever been like that.

Luckily acne hasn't been much of a problem for me.

Fertility wise I struggled for a long time to have my first but fell quickly with my 2nd whilst on my first course of Tamoxifen as I couldn't take Clomid, so have faith and I agree with some of the others that weight loss and Metformin can help fertility a great deal as I can tell that I ovulate every month now.

So its just the hair thats my bug bare now and after I have finished LL I will perhaps save up some money and courage to have laser treatment!

Hi
Im another one...I was diagnosed at 19 by accident... I had a car accident and started bleeding irregular so the issurance company sent me to a private gyni to find out what was wrong...he found out I had PCOS...I didnt really undersand and spent months waiting to be refered to an NHS gyni to be treated by which point Id been so upset about not being unable to have kids in my life..I was pregnant. Silly 19 year old lol.

At my heaviest Ive been 25 stone and Ive had 3 children all while weighing 20 stone or more and without treatment....
When I have my periods they are usually never ending ( or feel that way) I have about 3 or 4 days break in between periods. I have had a coil in since my youngest was born 4 years ago which means I now have the odd period every so often.

I now weigh 17st 11lbs and Im 29 years. Ive found as Im getting older the hair and the acne are getting worst..... mainly on my chin.
I hate the spots.... I suppose I should go and see if they will send me to a specialist but i feels like its only got this bad since I started loosing weight...maybe as I loose more it will calm again.

Diet wise I do find it hard to loose...my weight lose seems quite slow. Ive just started Atkins due to the low carb content and it certainly has stopped the intense hunger feelings I used to get when my blood sugar dropped... I feel balanced now most of the time. Im hoping that the weight will fall off better with the lower carb intake.

Hi again Becky,

I was also on Metformin, So can`t really say which made the biggest difference for me? I lost a stone and a half in 6 weeks and then got pg ;)

I was dx with cancer in the middle of my pgy, So do wonder if that had anything to do with the weight loss rather than the Metformin/diet or whether I am just being paranoid

I haven't read all of this thread but thought I'd join in! I have a slightly different angle on this.

After battling with my weight for so long I went to my GP in 2001 to ask them to test me for PCOS after a friend who has it suggested I ask them to test. They tested my homones which were fine then did a scan which showed cyst. I was told I had polycystic ovaries but not the syndrome! I don't have any of the symptoms other than being overweight but I do have the cysts. I asked my doctor at the time whether I had the cysts because I was overweight or if I was overweight because of the cysts. She said "what came first, the chicken or the egg?!" Not very helpful! She said it would help if I could lose some weight but losing weight wouldn't be easy for me. They offered no help and as I don't have the syndrome there is no medication I can take for it so I just have to live with it! It doesn't cause me any trouble though and I had my hormones tested recently and they are all fine!

There are lots of treatments out there you neednt suffer. In regards to excess hair thereis a diuretic called spironolactone that can be prescribed by your doc to help minimise it and metformin to help with the symptoms of your pcos and dianette contraceptive pill. If the hair is really bad go to the gp give them the whole its affecting my body image, dont want to go out low self esteem speel and they can put you forward for laser hair removal on the nhs but you really need to play on it for them to do so. Rose water as a toner also helps minimise hair growth.

Ive got PCOS and dont have periods at all, I havent had one now for about 9 months, before that it was over 2years i was diagnosed finally at 17 but since i was 15 my periods were all over the place and by almost 16 they stopped all together! In the last 3years ive had one medically induced period & 2 natural ones after giving birth!

I should really go to the docs and get myself sorted as im having horrendous pains in my ovaries quite often, but as a single mum its a pain getting to the doctors.

Hi I have pcos also, mines more the fertility side and irregular periods. My periods to were masked by years of being on the pill. Weight loss is helping. Been doing the cambridge diet and its been the best thing I've ever done. Fantastic skin, no mood swings and fast weight loss. 3 and a half stone in just 11 weeks. 6 pounds before we can start fertility treatment!!! yippee!

starbucks dont suffer the pain I would get that sorted if I were you. Could you not try and coincide your appointment with your babys health check at the docs?

Oh geez I forgot who said about their daughter having PCOS, I would really recommend you take her to the GP to get checked, the sooner its sorted the sooner she can get her head around it if she does have it. Its all well and good saying that 'she is still young' but feeling that there is something wrong with you and noone is listening to you, is one of the worst things when you are younger.

I battled with my GP for 2 years since i was 13, as I never had a regular cycle, I always had extra hair, spots, over weight (well medically obese), and all he would say was 'lose some weight', thats easy to say, but with pcos comes insulin resistance (PCOS for Dummies is a fantastic book to read btw). It took 2 years to get refered onto a gyna, even that only took off because my period would some twice a month, or once every 5 or so months I got threatened by a pregnancy test by my mother!, and then I got diagnosed with it just before I turned 16.

First pill was Dianette but it made me so depressed, got put onto Yasmin which reacted with me alot better, have been put on Metformin since Oct last year however only started losing weight in Feb this year.

If you have excess hair, i suggest you go get checked for pcos (i forgot where it said, i think it was bbc website, that 70% of women with excess hair, have pcos as the underlying problem), also alot of the time women get diagnosed with diabeties type 2 is because they had undiagnosed pcos so they couldnt catch it early and prevent it.

GI diet was fine, I did it a few months before a holiday, lost 2 stone, however during my holiday I left it, and got lazy, never wanted to restricted my food, and gained the weight incredibly quickly without realising it (thats one major problem with pcos, you gain so easily). On Paul Mckenna at the moment since Mid Feb and lost 16lb, i'm finding it alot more easy going than I ever found the GI diet.
