Again not being judgemental at all about people with eating disorders. I consider myself to have one, it's officially called a Binge Eating disorder, and I would hazard a guess a lot of us in here have that.

I must admit it was one small concern of mine starting off LT [Day 4 at moment] , that I would find it difficult returning to normal food when the day came to do so.

Makes you laugh really , a BMI of 34 and I'm afraid of anorexia !!

As I said it is only a small concern and one I will address nearer the time. It is difficult enough sticking to it at the moment.

My mam just told me the other day that she would prefer if I came off the diet sooner rather than later cos she's worried ill become anorexic

I was completely shocked cos there is nothing I am looking forward to more than eating! :eat: terrified of regaining weight but dying to taste wonderful wonderful food again! :eatdrink023:

I have had the same thoughts. I've actually wondered whether anorexics have bought LT online so they can go without eating but keep their nutrients. I confess to not understanding anorexia too much, I guess its more than worry whether or not the body is healthy tho.

I have heard some phrases used here that have come up on pro-anorexia sites 'thinspiration' for example and the mottos some of us adopt are like the mantras I've seen on these sites. God that sounds awful but I actually have found these sites hoping to find some strength to not eat. Isn't that terrible -I'm quite shocked at myself now. I have went on pro-ana sites because I was so desperate to lose weight and gain some self control.

I suppose, just to be controversial, that LT is supervised anorexia for the obese?

No I don't think that is awful BlackRose, we are driven to all kinds of mad behaviours to get this weight off.

I suppose it's good to remember though that Eating Disorders come in many forms.

Anorexia is the most dangerous but over eating to an extent where you put your health at risk is also a form of self abuse is it not ?

As I have said many times I have a BMI of 34. I put myself at risk of diabetes type 2, heart disease and even certain forms of cancer but still I couldn't stop eating.
I have hope that this might finally be the solution "One day at a time" [that is not a pro anorexia expresiion it is an AA 12 step one]

Pro-Ana is not about losing weight it is to help people with bulimia and anorexia to try to make the most positive choices IF they are going to continue with their habits......(Hmmm hard to explain)

Like people being sick constantly may have terrible teeth so a pro-an site will recommend rinsing your mouth with water not brushing your teeth as it damages the emamel.

THe reason for these sites is not to encourage an Eating disorder but to avoid any extra risks i suppose. (again sorry but its hard to explain)

True Tazzi, but they are also accepting the inevitablity of starving to death.
What they don't do is suggest ways you can overcome the illness.
Pro Ana sites are similiar to having a Cancer support website that shows readers how to continue smoking without getting caught or a site for alcoholics that suggests eating mints to disguise the smell of vodka on their breaths.

I don't see them as harm minimalisation sites at all.

I think as long as your doing the whole 'dieting' PROPERLY, with the cdc, or LL counsellors. They help you understand WHY you over ate in the 1st place so you get taught to 'eat' properly. I know many people dont have access to councellors and this is maybe where they fall down, but again i think its about teaching youself to eat properly.
i think a lot of people need to be re-taught how to use food as energy and not see it as the enemy. Ive seen what anorexia does 1st hand with my cousin, so i know how much damage it can do.

You control food, not let food control you.

    Interesting thread.
I use another forum where there are a fair few people with an eating disorder - its not a dieting forum, a general discussion group.
In my experience, people with ED's look for websites that encourage the positive side (if there is one) of their particular disorder. However what we see as positive and what an Anorexic would see as positive are 2 different things. I am talking about 'thinspiration' sites. Even on Facebook there are groups that address thinspiration.
At least that is what the posts on the other forum I use tell me.

Yeah i can see your point of view :)

I just know when i needed help those sites really helped me with certain things. Someone with Anorexia/Bulimia has a mental illness and should be seen by a professional. But as anyone with kids knows.....if someone is really determined to do something...they will. Sometimes it is harder to speak and relate to someone who just tells you you are bad.

The NHS will tell you exactely the same things (or they did in my case) in order to keep you more positive than you would normally be and not feeling that everyone is against you.

We do get the occassional anorexic and normal/below weight bulimics here.

Personally, I don't feel this is the right place for them, and I direct them to another site that is much more 'qualified' to help, along with suggesting they get help from official sources...doctors etc.

They often come cheerfully proclaiming they are BMI 15 or whatever, but sometimes return admitting they have a problem and asking for help.

I've also seen the odd pro-anna site put on here, but we remove them.

As for this diet 'causing' anorexia. Highly unlikely. Anorexia is caused by a number of different things (genetics, psychological issues for example). Though theoretically you could get to an anorexic weight of BMI<17, it shouldn't happen as the vlcds on this website are all controlled by some type of counsellor.

It's incredibly sad, and it breaks my heart when I see them here:cry:

It is heartbreaking. I spent some time in hospital when I was younger with beautiful girl with bulimia. She was 14 and had none of her own teeth. I had confidence and self image issues but I couldn't understand how she punished her body so much. There are all different types of eating disorders, I daresay as Creosote has said, that many of us here have over eating disorders, which is why I get wound up at ppl attacking the 'cheaters'. I see LT as a recovery programme -not really supervised anorexia as I deliberately put out earlier.

What is interesting though is how many threads we get from ppl saying how they are 'dreading' re feed and eating again. I know that it usually the case that they're afraid to trust themselves with food again but I wonder how fine the line is between the fear of losing control over food but dealing with it, and simply choosing not to eat.

In the OA definition of anorexia I am sure many people here would qualify ie restricting food and skipping meals to lose weight, similarly with the bulimic/binge eating scenario. Personally I think anyone who eats themselves to obesity has an eating disorder, I include myself in that, the relationship with food is disturbed and it threatens my life.

I think taht lt is really positive however some people may get stuck in a cycle of relying on it even after they lost weight as they may panic if they put a little back on again. It's enevitable that some will go back on but only a little bit as if you are sensible about your diet from the word go you will mantain it I'm sure. I don't know this from personal experience just from one or two (much former heavier) friends. Now slinky friends.

It's up to the individual. No site could be responsible for what anyone does. All they can do is encourage healthy weight loss. Just a thought!

    Very interesting thread.

I used to be anorexic in the loosest terms 10 years ago (ie. my mum worked through it with me before it got too bad) and attempted bulimia. I then went the other way and went for a nice Binge Eating Disorder which got my BMI nice and high and obese.

I will admit, my relationship with food is completely screwed beyond belief. I know Im going to have a life long problem relationship with food but I dont want to let it scare me.

I think it scares me so much because I re-fed before and put on weight. Its ruined my relationship with food even further.

I was talking about it with my pharm tonight. This experience has made me realise that I need to adjust my perception of food, otherwise Im going to be in a vicious cycle for the rest of my life.

In terms of this diet promoting anorexia...well. I dont think it should. The 3 main VLCD's tend to routinely make you stop the complete non-eating phase when you hit a healthy BMI and then re-educate you regarding food. Obviously, this can be abused by some people but its usually reasonably well controlled by the counsellors and pharmacists.

All I can say is thankyou to LT and also to CD. They have changed my life. I aim for health nowadays rather than what size I am. A healthy BMI to me is a true achievement and I am now more mature enough to know I CAN maintain health.

Here here!! For the first time -possibly ever health and fitness are major motivators for me. It has always een a vanity thing before and I feel a diference in my motivation let me tell you!

I've binged and threw up to lose weight before, I did Atkins and if I broke I would throw up. I've even done it recently if I've broke LT.

Now I'm taking it seriously -properly seriously, not just serious about losing weight. I want to cure my bad habits and I feel ready to take it on. No more bingeing, no more comfort eating or emotional eating.

I want to enjoy food again and not have it constantly served with a side of guilt and worry. Physician heal thyself!! hahaha

In my first month I remembered the long forgotten pleasure of a youthful diet of coffee and cigarettes only. Nearly took up smoking again!
