Ever wish the ground would open up and swallow you?

Yesterday I was reminded of another huge error I made whilst learning to speak Spanish.

When I came here 30 years ago you needed a work permit and they were hard come by.

Whilst I was waiting for my guides job I wanted to earn some money so I made jams, chutneys, sausage rolls, ginger bread etc (no health and safety in those days ) and sold them on a small market.

I met some Spanish friends of my parents who were really interested to know what I was doing. I struggled in my best beginners Spanish to explain. My explanation was met with silence.

When I got home I looked up the key words of the conversation in a dictionary. I nearly died when I realized I had told them I made homemade condoms in different flavours and sold them on the market.

I was mortified but I never forgot the word for jam was confitura and the word for condom preservativo.
