Feeling bad for enjoying Christmas

Hi everyone, I only started SW on 6/12, I stuck to Extra Easy rigidly for the first week (only eating 10 syns all week) and I lost 4.5lbs. This week has been horrible, I knew I would be socialising but I made a deal with myself that I would not use any syns on food and I would stick to low syn alcohol.
My next weigh in is on 20/12 and I am terrified. It may not be as bad as I think but I may have put all the weight back on. Anyone else been in the situation? Shall I miss the weigh in?

Have you stuck to the deal you made with yourself? If you have managed to do this and used your syns as part of the plan then a gain is unlikely.

You did a very brave thing starting so close to Christmas, and so I wouldn't worry about it, this is not a short term thing you are doing and there are weeks where you may gain or stay the same throughout the year. If you don't go to WI this week, what happens next week when you had christmas day and boxing day to contend with? You probably won't want to go back then either - so make sure you go, even if you did happen to gain a little, most people will be experiencing the same thing, it's that time of year, but by still going you will be reaffirming your commitment to the changes you want to make to yourself - and can carry that commitment and focus through to the new year, and eventually, the new you!

I bet it's nowhere near as bad as you think it is anyway!!!

Thank you for your support. I have decided I will go because you're are right; if I don't I won't be back on track for next week and I don't know where that would leave me.
I made a decision to start near to christmas because I have been gaining weight steadily for the last year or so and I knew if I decided to go to SW in the New Year I would binge and I could have an extra stone or so to lose. My main goal for the next two weeks to either stay the same or at least minimise the weight gain and if my WI on 3/1 reflects this I will be a happy woman and it will put me well on track.

Hi Amy,
I'll throw my twopennorth in here - by only having 10 syns all week, you did not stick rigidly to EE. You get up to 15 syns a day (average 10, at least 5). They are as much part of the plan as healthy extras, free and superfree food and you should use them.
Don't beat yourself up for socialising, it is that time of year. Most of us will be aiming to stay the same this month.
Also, the most important thing is to never skip a weigh in because you have had a bad week -these are the most important weigh ins to go to :D
Good luck next week.

Hi, thanks again everyone, I won't be skipping the class :D

I thought syns were there to give you the flexability if you wanted it, I didn't know you had to eat a certain amount of syns everyday/week.

:ashamed0005:

Nope, syns are part of the plan.
They're not optional. They give you freedom and flexibility to have some treats but can also be used in cooking and for healthier snacks such as nuts.
SW have always said 5-15 a day, having at least 5. Have them and enjoy them :)

Yup, syns are part of the plan. Infact by only having 10 a week you have made it harder for yourself. I would start the plan by having the full 15 a day (or 105 weekly) then as you get closer to target, or your losses stall, you have something to cut back on.
Your 4.5lb loss the first week was fab, but that would be very hard to maintain on only 10 syns a week.

I did my loss at home, and stuck to the plan, but the old plan, where you only had 1 HEA on RED/GREEN.
I decided then to follow the plan with 2 HEAs but i just maintained for 4 weeks, my body was already used to just 1 HEA so with 2 it said, nope not losing any!
So i would get eating them syns, you'll still lose, especially this early into your SW journey.

I really thought I'd put on this week as I hadn't stuck to plan properly - not enough fruit and veg and too many syns! But was surprised when I went to WI on Thursday to have lost 2lb. Suspect it will catch up with me next week. LOL!

i am greedy and hate myself ...i have decided to try and maintain over christmas and then start a diet in january

i think it is virtually impossible to lose weight at this time of the year with this christmas..also i find when it is cold[it is very cold at the moment] i eat more too

sorry for barging in

A very good point about the syns. It makes sense that if I deprive myself of syns it will be hard to maintain. WI is tomorrow so I will let you know the outcome. Its nice to know I'm not alone. Thanks again :)

You are NOT greedy. Nor should you hate your self. You need to start forgiving yourself a bit more. And if you maintain over christmas- that will be amazing and a real achievement. And if you gain- so what? You can loose again. It won't kill you or set you back for ever. Ease up on yourself. And enjoy christmas. You are allowed to enjoy yourself.
*Hugs*

And Amy- it's a lot easier to have all your 15 syns. you certainly feel less deprived. But if you want to enjoy yourself on christmas day (for example) why not go 'flexible' This is where you set yourself a set amount of syns and don't go over. So you could say 'I will have 50 syns today' and allow yourself a couple of drinks and maybe some quality street etc but you stay in control. :)

You didn't barge in and you shouldn't think you are stupid or greedy. If you stay the same or have a small gain that will be an amazing achievement at any time especially Christmas. Good luck and I hope you all the luck, enjoy Christmas :)

well my goal is to maintain over christmas...don't know if i will manage that...anyway sorry

your all too nice

i wish everyone a happy christmas and good luck to everybody

Well I lost 0.5lbs. Absolutely gobsmacked. Its either a christmas miracle or because I stopped counting syns, I may not have gone over. Very worried it will catch up with me next week so will be as good as possible.

Well done Amy!!!

"Stupid" - you really need to be kinder to yourself. I thought I was bad at the self-criticism but you really do have a rod for your own back. Firstly, please think of a kinder username and ask Mini if it would be possible to change it. You are far from stupid!
If you want to succeed at this, the most vital lesson I can give you is that you have to stop giving yourself such a hard time! Everyone here is human, occasionally gives into temptation, and has days where they struggle to stay on plan. You will be much more successful at this if you can draw a line under these occasions and move on with the plan, than you will if you stop to beat yourself up, which is a fast track to self-defeating behaviour.

You can do this- you really can, but you absolutely need to be in a positive and focussed frame of mind to be able to.

You wouldn't speak to your friend the way you do about yourself, why aren't you worth as much respect as they are?

*hugs*

Yes I feel guilty about enjoying Christmas! Gained 4.5 lbs at WI on Monday so basically back to square 1 after only starting SW 3 weeks ago :'(
I should be happy as my main goal was to weigh less or the same as I did when I started SW and I am 0.5lb lighter. However I do feel like I have fallen at the first hurdle and wish I had more of a loss before I started gaining....... Am I alone?

Beautifully said Gill.

Stupid, who has done this to you? To have so little self esteem is not right. Stop berating yourself, you are amongst friends here and we all of us have or have had a problem with food. SW helps you re-channel that.

I am still greedy but now in a healthy way. Most people enjoy food, it is such a pleasurable thing, so don't be hard on yourself for being human.

hugs from me too !!! xxx

Don't be upset, or beat yourself up. Just climb back on the wagon and start again. What is done is past. You now know that with SW you can lose weight.
You enjoyed your Christmas eating now enjoy being back on track.

Good luck !!!
